12 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/09/2011

Hydraulic brake failure. Nhtsa action number:peo5020 was told by the dealer this was likely the "wheel speed sensor" and required a complete wheel bearing replacement as that is the only way the "wheel speed sensor" could be replaced. I became suspicious after looking at the "service advisors" writ-up which was nothing like I had described to him or the mechanic and nothing like they had told me the repair was. When confronting the "service advisor" about the way it was written up, his response was "this was my way of writing it up". After looking up the NHTSA information which I printed out, it appears the manufacturer was to pay for the complete repair. I was charged by the dealer for the complete repair. After getting home I searched the internet for recalls and here I am - looking for help in this fruad by the dealer. I am now suspicious that they might be double charging - charge the customer and also charge gm? another repair I had completed at the same time was a defective parking brake - total failure. Nhtsa action number: eao4011 was told by the dealer mechanic the linings wear even when the parking brake was not applied. Required linings and other part replacement for which I was also charged. In the recall vehicles I did not see my vehicle however the mechanic described the condition just as the recall notice described it so I'm thinking this vehicle might also be included? they also recommended a brake flush - which I had done and now am thinking this might have been required when the recall work was completed? I first started noticing the problem (NHTSA action number: peo5020) when pulling into parking spaces this winter however dismissed it at first thinking I may have been on ice. I came very close to smashing into a block wall on one occasion, a fence and parking curb on others. Thanks. Thanks.

13 Parking Brake problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

To whom it may concern: in July 2010, I purchased a 2004 chevy z71 with rear disk brakes, didn't take long to find out the parking brake did not hold. Done some research - found there was a recall, to change the 20 cent clip that holds the so-called brake shoe center of the hub. This is a joke because rough roads & pot holes will still cause the shoe to slip down and rub the drum. The design is a joke on all gm customers that bought vehicles with this easy apply parking brake using the drum in hat set up used with rear disk brakes. Please note the problem is not so much the people that use the break, they know it won't hold & there is a problem --- the problem is the people that never use the parking break (I'm betting that's a lot of people who have automatic transmissions) --- from what I saw after removing the drum/rotor, it is just a matter of time until the shoe wears at the rub point (bottom of shoe) and breaks in two or cuts into the drum. This in turn could cause the wheel to lock up when pieces start to jam against the hub.

14 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/29/2010

2000 Chevrolet silverado 2 wheel drive extended cab with 85000 miles crawling through rush hour traffic, someone cut me off. I stepped on the brakes and the pedal went slowly to the floor. I tried "pumping the pedal" to no effect. I tried the emergency brake. It did not hold the car. I pulled off the road. Slowed down by down shifting. Could not find the problem. Pumped the brakes a few times. I saw a puddle under the drivers side rear. I had rupture in the metal brake line. I crawled to a service station who replaced the brake line. I have not found out what is wrong with the emergency brake.

15 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

Corroded brake lines caused the failure of both front and rear brakes at the same time. Inoperable rear emergency brakes provided no emergency stopping ability. Replaced brake lines. Emergency brake not repaired. I understand that trucks with manual transmissions were recalled for emergency brake defect correction, but trucks with automatic transmissions were not eventhough they have the same emergency brake system. My vehicle has an automatic transmission. Not certain when emergency brakes became inoperable, but my guess is around 2004 or 2005, with 60k to70k miles. Brake line rupture was in 2009 at 156k miles.

16 Parking Brake problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/23/2009

Hello, I have a 2004 chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 extended cab. I started to notice that the anti-lock brakes were acting unusual. Between 10 mph and 7 mph, the anti-lock brakes will act like they were on wet pavement or icy pavement, pulsating until I come to a complete stop. I have 62,000 miles on the vehicle, it has been properly maintained and looks like the day it came from the dealer. I have been doing some research and have noticed that the goes back to the 1999 model year. I have contacted my dealer and there is not any recalls for my vehicle. Thank you.

17 Parking Brake problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

Braking system on my 2008 Chevrolet silverado vibrates harshly at speeds above 50 mph. The higher the speed, the more the vibration I feel, making it hard to stop and making the vehicle feel unstable. There is also a popping noise that has been coming from my rear brakes. These issues started at about 5-6k miles and have continued to get worse. I now have 24k miles on my truck and gm has not been able to fix these issues.

18 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/01/2009

2003 chevy silverado - poor steering- I have replaced the gearing box w/front end alignment due to having 4 estimates and advised that the gear box was defected. 6 months later - I have been advised by several certified mechanics that the gear box that was put in is also defected. Poor steering control, truck pulls all over the road which could result in a crash. If the steering boxes for this year/make vehicles are defected, why not compensate the owners for all the expenses. It is obvious that these parts for this year vehicle is in fact defected. How many complaints/accidents/injuries does it take before these issues are acknowledged? I have spent over $1,500. 00 just in the braking and steering repairs and yet faced again with more cost or either get rid of my truck that I had for 1 year.

19 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/26/2009

1 = when I arrived at work, my right rear wheel was severely heating up causing wheel to smoke and smell of brake pads burning up. 2 = first time occurrence, no sound of intermediate scraping noises heard from rear of vehicle while driving. 3 = took truck to repair shop, they determined the emergency brake pads came into contact with parking brake drums, causing heat build up which burned up the caliper, brake pads and brake hose and then told me there was a 9 page safety recall already issued by gm for this same exact parking brake defect. I told them not to repair the truck. I went to the gm dealer to have it repaired free. Gm refused to repair the truck stating the safety recall (I. E. # 05042b) only effected vehicles with manual transmissions and my truck is automatic. Please note: I used to be naise certified in brakes. I asked the service mgr what difference is there in "any" of the brake component part numbers between a manual and automatic vehicle of this same year and type. There is no difference. If I went to the auto parts store for any one of the emergency brake components, brake pads, rotors, calipers they would never ask if the vehicle is manual or automatic, they only ask the year and size of motor. If the parking brake can fail on a manual transmission vehicle, and there is not one difference in part numbers then it can fail on an automatic vehicle. The gm service manager agreed but said he couldn't do anything because the recall states manual transmission vehicles. I said you know it has to be a typo error on the recall document. My automatic vehicle had a contact condition between the parking brake pads and the parking brake drums and my parking brake "was not applied". The recall states this is the root cause of the same identical failure on a manual transmission vehicle. Same parts, same assembly line, identical safety issue.

20 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

The parking brake cable broke, preventing the brake release and preventing car from moving. When I bought a new cable at the dealer the parts counter man told me "it is common for these to break". If my wife had been out in the evening, she could have been in a very dangerous situation. If this is "common" I would like a recall so they can all be replaced with an improved cable.

21 Parking Brake problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/26/2008

On my 2007 chevy silverado I noticed the front tires wearing badly on the inside everybody said it was the alignment. Over the phone and in person the dealership told me it was normal wear and it look like an alignment. Had tires replaced and alignment checked, but it came out with in specs. Next day front brakes started failing, chevy dealer said wear and tear. Having the brakes looked at mech told me that right pass side rotor was beyond repair and needed to be replaced, and that the pad had ripped free on the metal bracket. Went to shop to look and found all pads are ripping free from the metal causing total brake loss. Problem fixed but mech. Unable to bleed system properly due to faulty or crack master cylinder. Dealer has passed it all off as normal wear and tear. Now a complaint has been filled through GMC corp. The total loss of break pad are unknown to the drive and come on with out any warning as the break pads do not have any warning stops to inform driver of worn out brake pads I only have 18,500 miles and purchased he truck new from dealer in question.

22 Parking Brake problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/15/2008

I have a 1999 chevy silverado. I have had to replace the brake lines due to a rupture as I was coming upon a 4 way intersection. Thank god nothing was coming as I rolled through it. I made it home and to the shop the next day and had to replace all the brake lines. I have had to replace the parking brake pads on the rear which is a recalled item on a truck that has a manual shift transmission. What does the transmission have to do with brakes? shouldn't matter, just because there hasn't been an incident of a roll away with an automatic transmission. So why do they inspect the parking brake if you have an automatic transmission? because it is an emergency brake! with this truck you need it. You can find many complaints of the brake lines rusting out in the same year and make as my truck. There is an apparent problem with quality at gm and they should be held accountable.

27 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/07/2007

I don't understand why you have a recall on the parking brake for a manual trans only when it is just as important to have one on a automatic trans. If you park your truck on a steep incline and can't use the parking brake along with the transmission, then it is virtually impossible to get it out of park and you can't tell me that doesn't do damage to the transmission. . . . It takes the same part to fix the parking brake in a automatic trans as it does in a manual trans. . Very disappointed!!!!!.

28 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 01/08/2007

Same parking brake problem as covered in recall on trucks with manual transmission, only mine is an automatic and not covered. Parking brake has seldom been used yet pedal goes all the way to floor and does not hold vehicle securely since 30,000 miles, and cannot be adjusted. Parking brake shoes are worn abnormally while rear disk brake pads (original) are barely worn. This is a terrible design and needs a recall. Internet forums are full of complaints similar to mine on this vehicle.

29 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/10/2006

The pads on the regular brakes still had over 50% use left. The consumer claimed that he only used the emergency brake twice. The brakes are not self adjusting but have to be adjusted manually.

30 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/09/2006

- the contact stated that the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, received recall 05v161000 for the parking brakes. He took the vehicle to the dealership for the recall repairs on 12/2006. Six days after the repairs the weather became cold about 30 degrees, and the emergency brake became stuck. He did get the emergency brake to release and drove the vehicle 3 miles when began smelling something that smelled like the brakes burning. He got out of the vehicle and noticed that the passenger's side rear wheel was extremely hot. He let the vehicle cool down ,and tried to jar the emergency brake. Then he called the dealership, and they reminded him that in extremely cold weather he shouldn't use the emergency brake. The brakes were repaired. The dealership didn't charge him for the repair, they informed him the recall repair had not been done properly, and that the emergency brake was adjusted too tight. The contact stated that after this repair he drove the vehicle for about a week, and the emergency brake froze up again. He filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and wa given a case#71-461637111. The contact stated that he had to sell the vehicle because couldn't take the chance with the emergency brake on the road, and so he traded the vehicle in. 31 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 11/07/2006

Parking brake does not work in my 2000 Silverado 1500 equipped with an automatic transmission.
