36 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/01/2006

Parking brake failure. The parking brake has failed to secure vehicle. I realize that recall has been made for manual trans but this has gotten progressively worse and now total failure. Failed safety and state vehicle inspection. The internet boards are filled with examples of failed parking/emergency brakes on 2000 yr silverado. This constitutes a design defect and gm needs to address. Linkage is now locked in open position effectively providing no emergency brake. This in addition to the failure of the fuel sensing module in fuel tank and the abs brake shudder/failure problems at lower speeds. I just want it on record that gm puts out these trucks yr/yr with these know problems and doesn't correct these safety issues until the NHTSA puts their weight behind it. Thx.

Failure Date: 06/28/2006

Complaint about rear parking brake at service repair several times to dealership. I was told that is just the way it is. . . Now at 84,438 miles after the extended warranty is over by less than one year and 9,000 miles, being told the rear parking brake pads are worn out and need to be replaced. Cost was nearly $300. I was told they wear out as you drive around??.

40 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/10/2006

The parking brake has failed on my 2002 Chevrolet silverado, as has been described in the gm recall number 05042. The friction linings have worn and cut into the drum, making the parking brake ineffective. A gm representative told me my vehicle was not recalled, and the only vehicles recalled were vehicles that have a manual transmission. Mine has an automatic transmission. I believe my vehicle should be included in the recall, due to the fact that I have to park on steep boat ramps while launching my boat, and have to depend on the parking brake to help hold the vehicle from rolling into the water.

41 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 05/23/2006

There is a recall for the parking brake on 2002 chevy silverado pickups with manual transmissions starting Apr 20, 2005. However, I do not know of a single 2002 silverado pickup or 2001 suburban where the parking brake holds. I have been told that if you don't use the parking brake it gets out of adjustment (rumor). I don't use mine with my automatic transmission. Mine has never held since I purchased the vehicle. Tuesday, may 23, 2006, I took my pickup to the dealership to have it inspected for a new inspection sticker. It failed because of the parking brake. Yet, this same dealership has inspected my pickup for every other inspection sticker and this is the first time they failed it even though it has never held.

42 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

- the contact found a recall for the manual trasmission version of his truck but he is having the same parking break issues with his truck which is an automatic. The dearler has stated that there is no recall on this vehicle. The mechaniic states that it was a bad design.

43 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/01/2005

Parking brake is not holding. I have an automatic silverado ss 6. 0 v8 2003 model. I started to roll down a hill because my brakes didn't hold. The only thing that held was my automatic transmission gears and that is putting a strain on them and makes it hard to take in and out of gear.

44 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 12/12/2003

02 silverado, park brake shoe is not held in place securely and moves around in the hub at any bump in the road, especially at low speeds. Because the brake levers are inverted, the driver side brake will lock up when hitting a pot hole in my drive way daily. This is not the rear end freezing up or transmission malfunction. One tire locks up and the other spins excessively. For proof, just take the hub off and look at how the shoe is not held in place. A corrective part needs to be added , hopefully nobody has been injured because of this. This was mentioned to the chevy dealer by myself in 2003 and if I would have known how to contact you back then, I would have ASAP.

45 Parking Brake problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 03/01/2002

Have had a issue with the emergency brake of my 1999 Chevrolet silverado auto transmission since it was new. Took vehicle in under warranty to dealer for repair they only adjusted cable instead of changing pads. Still did not solve problem, was told by dealer that lever going all the way to floor was normal as this brake was for parking not for emergencies and was not meant to stop vehicle only to gradually slow it down or hold on a incline. Have since discovered that gm did a recall but only on models with manual transmissions the difference I still need a emergency brake too, should there be a recall for all models with that parking brake system. From what I have read and been told the pads were deployed and rubbed even without depressing emergency brake pedal and the pads wore out in no time as was my case.

46 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 02/15/2002

Parking does not hold vehicle in place when fully engaged. The parking brake pedal travels to floor with very little resistance. Vehicle continues to roll on incline if taken out of gear with parking brake fully engaged. The parking brake has never functioned properly since vehicle was purchased brand new in 2002 from folsom lake Chevrolet, folsom, CA. I've discussed this issue with other chevy silverado truck owners with the 4-wheel disc braking abs system and they all have had the identical problem I have had. I am disappointed and alarmed that gm has not done the right thing and taken care of this ever so apparent problem.

47 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 07/20/2001

The parking brake shoes on my 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 have required numerous replacements. I have to replace the parking brake shoes every year before having my truck inspected. Even after being replaced, the parking brake barely holds on even the slightest incline.

48 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 08/05/2000

2000 silverado 4 wheel drive VIN 2gcek19t6y13xxxxx rear brakes corrode every 8,000 miles to the point of being totally ineffective at stopping the vehicle. Also parking brakes require readjustment at 8,000 miles because they wear out not even being used. This I see was a recall for manual transmissions, automatic transmissions suffer the same problem but no recall. Nhtsa recall#05v1610000. The rear brake pads wear out every 30,000 miles the front brake pads every 100,000 miles this I believe is the cause of many vehicle accidents ,this is because the vehicle is only being stopped by one set of brakes which causes the abs to come on prematurely. This all started in the year 2000 and still continues today November 2006.

49 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Failure Date: 06/10/2000

2000 chevy silverado. The parking brake has had premature wear on left side causing metal to metal contact with the shoe and the rotor. Happened at 40,000 and 85,000 miles. Replaced rotor and brakes both times. Recall #05v161000 addresses this problem in trucks with manual transmissions only. Worn emergency brake reduces brake holding power and causes expensive premature expense.
