Failure Date: 08/31/2015

Driving to pick up my son from work on side streets, traveling about 25mph when my brake went to the floor. Almost rear ended car at stop sign. Got out of truck and found large spot under my truck, brake fluid. Had it towed to brake shop and mechanic informed me my brake lines were rusting though and needed to replace all brake lines. Also told me he has seen this with 3 or 4 other chevy trucks lately. Found other complaints after telling my story. Heard this is a known problem with these trucks. . I bought this truck new & have had it rust proofed 12 times. Thank you.

8 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

I own a 2002 Chevrolet silverado LS hd2500, original owner purchased in June of 2002, currently have 71,000 mile, beautiful truck very well maintained. This is my second complaint being filed on this vehicle concerning my brakes. My first complaint was filed in March of 2014, when my brake lines rusted through and I was left with no brakes. After searching on-line, I found that this is a known problem for these vehicles and there is a recall on some of these vehicles, but not all of them. My complaint today also has to do with my brakes. Once again, I found that some of the vehicles have a recall, but not all of them . The anti-lock brake system would activate, causing my brakes to not work. If I wanted to stop, I couldn't slow down to stop, I would have to brake hard to stop my vehicle, if I tried to slow down to stop, my anti-lock brake system would activate, causing my brakes to not work. I did contact gm, and was told that there was nothing they could do to help resolve this problem with my vehicle because mine was not included in the recall, even though some of my year, make and model had a recall notice. They are well aware of this problem, because they do have a bulletin out informing the dealer how to resolve this problem. Once again, this is the brake system, very dangerous, could be fatal. Not sure why this isn't a priority to resolve.

9 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2015

About two days ago when I pushed my brakes they felt spongy and when I pulled into my driveway I could smell brake fluid. Today I went to move the truck to check it out. The brakes were even more spongy,so I pushed them hard and the brake line ruptured above the fuel tank. The front brakes would not stop the truck, so I had to use the transmission to stop the truck. It must have sprung a small leak two days ago when I noticed the fluid smell and spongy feel. Good thing I wasn't driving on the road when it burst today, because it would not have stopped.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2014

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2014

Same story as every other 99+ silverado: the brake line burst behind cab and all brake pressure was lost. Brake system defects are far more dangerous than a faulty ignition switch. Why are gm and NHTSA ignoring these complaints?.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2014

On may 9, 2014 I was backing up to hook up to a trailer with my truck. With absolutely no warning sign or indication, my brake line busted and I had no brakes whatsoever. The pedal went all the way to the floor. Even at this slow of speed in reverse I could not stop and ran directly into the trailer. My wife was standing at the trailer directing me and luckily did not get hurt because of this brake failure. I had to use the emergency brake to get stopped, and even that was very sluggish to stop the truck. I am now finding out that this is common issue with these vehicle and there is an open investigation into this matter. Gm needs to do something about this as the immediate failure of the brakes with no warning is sure to cause serious injury or death should it happen while driving down the road.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2014

I was driving home in my 2002 Silverado 2500 hd, when I can to a stop at the stop sign, my brake pedal went to the floor and I could not stop. My truck went through the intersection, but luckily there was no oncoming traffic. I brought my truck to a local auto repair shop, where they replaced just faulty brake lines due to them rusting out prematurly. My repair bill was over $1500 dollars.

16 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

While backing down driveway the brakes were applied. The brake pedal went completely to the floor with total brake failure. Emergency brake was used to stop vehicle. Upon inspection, two brake lines had rusted to the point of failure and all brake fluid was on the ground. My 1987 f-250 does not have brake lines this rusted. I am glad I was not in city driving when this occurred. I will have vehicle towed to dealership to have all brake lines replaced.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2014

Middle brake line corroded in half causing brakes to fail. Now need to change all brake lines at a $289. 00 cost with additional cost of 8 hours labor. Was told caliber bleeders are probably corroded too so will need new calibers. This has been an ongoing issue for the past several years. When will gm solve problem when someone finally gets killed?.

Had just exited the freeway and corroded brake line broke. Lived at the end of the road so was able to drive slow to at least get it home using the emergency brake. Examined all brake lines and all are so corroded they need to be replaced. Was lucky it didn't break away while on the freeway. Chevy tryin to kill their customers?.

20 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

When I started out of my driveway & hit the brakes, they went to the floor. Emergency brake slowed, but would not stop. Brake lines behind left front wheel on top of frame had hole(s) rusted in them & fluid running out. Emergency brake would not work properly because of leaking right rear wheel seal that had greased the emergency brake shoes. Truck had to be hauled to a garage, where it is now.

25 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

I had just gotten my fuel pump replaced at a local garage, was driving it home and found the brake pedal going almost all the way to the floorboards. I pulled over at the first safe place, found a fluid just gushing out around gas tank area on the drivers side. It had just rained for the last few days, so I thought it was just water. I drove a little further, then decided to drive it back to the garage, only about a mile away, after smelling brake fluid and verifying the my reservoir was seriously low. More dripping on the drivers side, this time I'm sick to confirm it is brake fluid. Took it back to the garage, he said he'd look at it tomorrow, but I said I'd drive it home all of 2 miles down the street. Got home no issues, cause I used the e-brake, and found the reservoir nearly drained. Nothing around the wheels; this was the only leak. Now I'm thinking the brake lines must have been seriously rusted (again!) and gotten disturbed when they replaced the fuel pump. I had this happen shortly after I bought the vehicle used, about five years ago. I paid good money back then to have the 'stainless steel' brake lines to the abs head replaced back then. Why are they rusted through again!?!?! had no idea they ran up by the top of the tank, but hey, why not? I'm certain the line have rusted out again - why?!?!? they are supposed to be stainless steel; since when does stainless ever rust? I haul a 12,000lb fifth wheel; thank god I wasn't hauling at the time this happened (again!) and killed myself and my entire family in an auto crash. Just sick of it; take care of your bad engineering chevy!.

26 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2013

Repeat occurrence on 6/22/2013. First occurrence was in approximately August of 2010. Brake lines severely rusted. Have kept under watch, however the rate of rust seems to increase. With this last incident, all brake lines will have to be replaced, costing well over $1000. Verified with 3 locals garages that this is a well documented problem for this year and around this year of Chevrolet trucks. They have all had to do repair due to very poor quality materials used for the brake lines. This truck is primarily used to pull a horse trailer. I feel we were fortunate that the issue did not occur while towing. Gm should feel very luck. If there would have been an accident while towing the horse trailer, gm would have had a major lawsuit on their hands. As it is, time for them to do the right thing and initiate the recall.

27 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

While driving on city streets , I went to stop behind a car at a stop light and the brakes went to the floor with no warning. I hit the car from behind and luckily no one war injured but minor damage to the rear of the car was obseved. After the incident, oil continued to leak from the line under driver side door, the warning light did come on but after the accident had already occurred. This was the first failure. Brake line was repaired and a year later, the second brake line failed on may 23, 2014. While pulling boat out of boat ramp, I went to stop the truck and the brake pedal went to the floor again , luckily not going fast or down an interstate. Again the leak was from under the driver side door, but was the other parrallel line going to the abs block. This is a serious saftey issue and I was very lucky twice. All brake lines will be replaced with stainless steel lines. I will not buy another gm product unless they make this right.

28 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2013

Brake line failure. This is my vehicle's third brake line failure due to rust. All of my brake lines have rusted to the point that the brake lines are not safe. The braking system is not safe. There is no excuse for such poor materials. Stainless steel brake lines should have been used! my vehicle has been regularly washed during winter months of salt and debris. Fuel lines are near failure as well. Transmission cooling lines are rusting and leaking. Oil cooling lines are rusting and seeping as well. Rust has a much higher tendency where any of these lines are held in place by the plastic clips. (usually located along the frame) in addition, rust is forming heavily at transitions for all of the above lines. For example: rust is heavy where the fuel lines have crimped hoses attached. This is a major safety hazard.

29 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2013

As I was coming to a stop at a stop sign, I applied the brakes, but the truck kept going. Later on I examined the brake line and notice that it was corroded. I had the truck towed to my mechanic and he advised me that all the brake lines are corroded. I contacted gm, and they had a dealer look at the brake lines and confirmed that they were corroded. The corrosion is a latent defect and as I learned from your website and other blog, gm has a major defect that they refuse to remedy. I strongly believe that some one may get seriously injured, based on my experience. I was fortunate. . . Thank the lord!.

30 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was applied and extended to the floor without any response. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake line and hose needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 92,000.

31 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2013

While performing an oil change I noticed severe brake line corrosion. The truck was immediately taken to my local mechanic for inspection and is now having all brake lines replaced. Thankfully the brake lines did not fail while I was driving or towing a trailer. I have a 1989 chevy Silverado 2500 that hasn't had corrosion problems like this newer one. After some googling I found out that there is an investigation in to this matter and that many owners have had their brakes fail while driving. The NHTSA needs to step up and hold gm accountable. Sure, it will be an expensive recall but if gm does the right thing it will show that they care about the safety of americans and will make many brand-loyal customers happy. This matter is very serious, especially considering what the majority of these hd trucks are used for. . . Hauling, towing, etc.

32 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2012

Lost sudden brake pressure. Have no warning light. Found a pool of brake fluid under middle of truck bed this morning. A brake line appears to have ruptured above the gas tank. I have read of numerous complaints with this same issue. Thank god I discovered the problem at home and did not continue to drive this morning.

33 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2012

Hard brake line failure. Brake line ruptured as brakes were applied. This is the 2nd hard brake line failure I have experianced on this truck.

34 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2012

While approaching the back of another vehicle while it was taking a left hand turn, I applied my brakes and had none, the peddle went to the floor and I could not stop. I down shifted the truck into low gear which is with an automatic transmission and applied the emergency brake. I had the truck towed to a repair shop where I was told the brakes are rotted and line ruptured. I understand there are a lot of problems with the brake lines on these vehicles and something should be done about them. Surely they are made of inferior materials because this problem is not happening with other trucks models like Ford, Dodge, or tundra. Truck is now at steve's accurate auto repair, madbury nh.

35 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2012

Brake line ruptured from small spot. Caused by corrosion. Breaks became soft pedal pushed to floor. Line was in the front of truck . All lines are found to be in poor condition related to rust on entire truck.
