Purchased my car in October of 2018. In July of 2019, my check engine light came on, followed shortly afterward by the temperature overheat gauge. Took my car in and was told that my thermostat needed replaced and that this is common with my make/model. Replaced the thermostat. In January 2020, check engine light came on again, with a po599 code. Took it to local auto shop to have it diagnosed; they said that the check engine light came on when starting the car, so likely wasn't an overheating issue. They thought it was the sensors/circuits. After running diagnostic check, again suggested replacing the thermostat. This is now the second time the thermostat has needed replaced in the year and three months that I have owned the vehicle. When at jiffy lube, I was told that they had seen at least four other Sonics come in with the same check engine code.

Temp 45-50 degrees, driving in moderate rain for 20-25 minutes, cruise control on. Activate high beams, car shifts to 1st gear at 65 mph, rpms jump above 6000, turn off high beams returns to normal operation. Repeated 2 more times in next 4 miles, even at 25 mph. When end of trip, shut off car and completely dead, no lights, no cranking. Following morning (today) car starts normally. Will report any further from my commute today, if warranted.

The shift lever button will not release when in park, so the vehicle doesnt not read that its firmly in park; the key wont release and I cannot turn off the vehicle until the button unjams itself or I lubricate it to do so. This has been happening frequently. The only fix is replacing the entire shift lever, which is upwards of $300.

My car jerks when it downshifts. It's been doing this about a year after I got it. Got it checked out at the dealership and they said it's not a problem. Fast forward. . . It's worse. The car jerks in second and first downshifting. Doesn't matter if I'm driving on the interstate or city street.
While driving my car, the car looses power and began to stall. I've went to two chevy dealerships and two repair and no one is able to tell me what's the problem.
Upon accelerating my Sonic has lack of power and gears don't engage or they are delayed which causes me to be very unsafe from oncoming traffic when my car decides to engage I can then continue driving. I also have a issue with the car electrical system refusing to chime when keys are left in ignition as a warning sometimes I put my high beams on and all the locks lock and my car does the refusal to engage in gear thing again and my lights flicker my whole computer system went dead and no one can figure out why I only bought the car 6 months ago for 12,000 so I could have reliability and I shouldn't have to deal with this or anything for quite so time my old car is safer than this new one.
Gear/transmission failure while driving in steady traffic. . . Car suddenly went to 5-6000rpms without pressure on the gas and then down quickly to 1000rpms before I was able to stop and pull over. Afterwards, I couldn't get the car to move above 1000rpms and reverse gear went into failure. The tow truck couldn't move it without placing it into manual mode. It's been in the garage for a week with all diagnostics showing failure within the transmission. At this point, I either need to replace the transmission or buy a new car. I only had approximately 55,000 miles on the car in 7 years.
Shifter button has cracked and causes the button stuck. This allows the shifter to be moved without pressing the button and also prevents the key from being removed. The car could easily roll away if bumped due to improper shift locking. This can happen when you're already in park or even in drive. Tons of complains online through forums and videos on youtube how to replace but cost shouldn't be up to owners. Fix this chevy!.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. While accelerating from a stop, the vehicle failed to exceed 10 mph. The contact was three miles away from her destination with the accelerator pedal depressed to the floorboard. Each time the vehicle came to a stop, the failure recurred. In addition, the gear was not shifting and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the vehicle was losing transmission fluid. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact called Chevrolet of columbus (2825 merchant mile, columbus, in 47201, (812) m308-4380) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.
Dealer sold me car with bald tires less than 2/32. Dealer sold car with filthy rusty and loose parts on manifold. Valves. Struts. And trans mount. Suspension pieces were broken and old. The thermostat was put in wrong and caused divid in manifold. Battery and electrical system also had issues. All issues were from mile 1 to 200 of owning car.
Tl the contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic. While driving 15 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The contact also mentioned that the vehicle shut off without warning while at a complete stop. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where they diagnosed the vehicle and replaced the oxygen sensor; however, the failure persisted. The contact took the vehicle back to the independent mechanic on numerous occasions and had the thermostat and intake main gasket set replaced, and an engine tune -up; however, the failure continued. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 78,456.
The gear shift in the car started sticking about 3 years ago but it would still shift so I wasn't too concerned. Since then it's gotten gradually worse until tonight where it took me 5 minutes to put it into park. I couldn't released the key or get it out of reverse and it was terrifying. Mine and others safety was put at risk because my car not going into park means it can roll anywhere and cause an accident. I haven't taken it to a dealer to get checked and it hasn't been inspected by anyone else. There never have been any warnings from the car that there is an issue.
I purchased this vehicle used in 2016 from a car dealership. A couple of months ago my key would not come out of the ignition and I had to wait a few mins then try again. Next time it did that it took 30 mins to remove the key until finally the last time it would not come out period and I had no choice but to leave the vehicle and have it towed to the shop. I had to replace a part of the shifter. There was a metal piece right under the shifter knob that failed. I had aul insurance vintage now and had to pay 500,000 dollars for this repair because he stated that it was not covered. Personally I don't believe that but I had no choice and paid to have it fixed. I took the vehicle prior to the shifter visit to the dealershil twice with a complaint of not getting enough power when I excelerate and it moves slowly and is at 10-25 mph before it moves to the highway speed of 55mph. They again said they could not find anything. Again today I experience the slow exceleration again, so I am making a complaint this time. There is a electrical problem with this vehicle I 've had a couple of electrical issues as well as a replaced water pump. I got this in 2016 it should not have these many problems with this vehicle. I am always stopped at a light in the turning left lane getting on the highway when this happen and other cars have almost hit me several times. I wantit to be investigated and known before I go back to the dealership again and to be told thatthere s nothing wrong. I see the dashboard lights dim quite a lot while I am driving. And when it stall like this the power lights get really dim but you can still see your mph etc. Please help me something is wrong with this vehicle and I don't want to die in it.
The gear shift button is sticking, which is posing a hazard. The car does not complete the shift or release the key until after the button unsticks. It happened when I tried to park and it happens when I'm shifting between reverse and drive. Its not a one time occurrence.
2013 Chevrolet Sonic turbo has issue with coolant system. Car is constantly triggering the 'check engine' light and may cause damage to car due to overheating and coolant leak. Coolant leaks after call is not in motion and trying to cool. Fan continues to run after vehicle has been shut down.
Automatic shifter release button sticking you can not get the car to go into park to shut off car also it stays depressed causing you to be able to easly hit the shifter into neuteral or reverse while driving.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the turbine shaft malfunctioned, which caused the vehicle to remain in third gear. The dealer stated that the turbine shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.
The car has under 100k miles and seems to be having transmission problems. Everything has been well maintaintanced. I recently purchased the car being the second owner. The car has issues getting up to speed causing people to tailgate me or speed up and go around me. You can also feel/hear the transmission going through the gears. The takeoff is absolutely terrible. You can tell the engine is working hard. The rpms don't go above the danger zone but they do rise when switching through the gears. It's very likely to cause a accident especially on the interstate. The car cannot get out of it's own way.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic. While attempting to park the vehicle, the shift interlock button seized. The contact was unable to place the vehicle in park, turn the key in the ignition, or release the brake pedal without the vehicle rolling forward. The vehicle was taken to grand prize Chevrolet Buick GMC (located at 32 NY-304, nanuet, NY 10954, (845) 623-6060) where it was diagnosed that the gear shift button (gm95393161) needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

The contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Car gave me a code of u0101 and took it to chevy dealership and told me it has something to do with lost communication. They tried fixing issue but couldnt.
Button on the shifter occasionally sticks. When it happens you cannot get your key out and you can easily accidentally go into reverse. After checking online I've come across several people with the same problem. This is definitely a safety hazard.
The button on the sifter handle has broken and gets stuck in allowing the shift handle to move freely. This has caused my vehicle to shift into neutral while driving. It has also allowed my vehicle to shift into reverse on its own while sitting in the parked position. This issue has been going on in a lot of the Sonic and needs to be recalled. My vehicle has also shifted into reverse and hit another vehicle parked behind me.
When driving at 54 mph there is a jumping motion of the vehicle. It feels like I hit the brake pedal. It will do this several time when driving only at 54 mph for more then 1/4 of a mile. There are no warning light and all fluids are checked and are adequate.
The turbocharger failed. It seems like a common issue because the replacement part is on national backorder. Driving without replacement poses safety concerns. It is also a large expense when not covered after the 5 year powertrain warranty expires.
When air conditioning is turned on call loses power if stop at a red light or stop sign you can press the accelerator all the way down car is very slow taking off and sometime window control don't work. Air-condition blows hot air at times.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic. The contact stated that when the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle hesitated and ceased to move. The manufacturer and dealer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 76,788.
Vehicle doesn't always have to be in motion however motion is triggering the engine to stay on or at times disappear for a short period of time. Constant diagnostic testing code is p0011. I have been to general motors dealerships as they refuse me to go outside their dealers for repairs; results possibility of denying me coverage under my powertrain warranty. I have put in case after case with their complaints and only results into something I already do is simply call dealership. I am driving a very unsafe unpredictable vehicle that is not being fixed. I have been to 3 of their dealerships total times of 8 times. Currently still till this day with same issue.
-engine valve oil leak -engine valve cover had to be replaced due to a crack -oil pan leak -hoses fell apart while on highway (495) causing all refrigerant to leak out and cause a/c to blow warm air -all coolant leaked out due to faulty thermometer housing & gasket causing the heat to blow out cold air. No check engine light or engine temperature light was displayed despite the fact that there was no coolant in the resovoire -side mirrors stopped adjusting due to faulty switch -driver side heated seat had a shortage due to faulty seat cushion this vehicle only has 65,000 miles on it and has had to be practically rebuilt due to cheap/faulty parts. Leaking coolant can cause the engine to overheat.
My 2012 Chevrolet Sonic lt sedan has harsh shifting and feels like it is downshifting when it is not suppose to be while in motion.
Transmission fractured.
Have been having bad issues with fear selector button sticking, and it affects the selector slipping into other gears as it cannot lock.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. When pressing the shift gear button to switch between gears, the button would become stuck and remain depressed. As a result, the shifter would inadvertently change the transmission from drive to reverse, neutral or park, when accidently bumped. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The local dealer (penny kemp Chevrolet in evansville, in) was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. The contact stated that the key was unable to be removed from the ignition. In addition, the shifter fractured while shifting from park to drive. The vehicle was driven to a dealer (hennessy Buick GMC, 7261 jonesboro road building 1, morrow, GA 30260, (844) 240-2377) for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified.
