general problems of the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe - part 2

I was driving the vehicle, exiting the parking lot when the engine and all electrical components turned off. This could have easily caused and accident as there were multiple vehicles that had to go around me while I tried to restart the vehicle. The engine would crank but not start up and left me stranded in the middle of the road and in the middle of two lanes. When I finally got the vehicle towed several days later (which was not easy because in order to put the transmission in neutral without the engine being on, a special tool is needed) I took it to the dealership. They confirmed it was the fuel controller that went bad for the second time. The first time the vehicle was stuck in my garage at home with the same symptoms. They apparently replaced it with another faulty part that is a ticking time bomb. I have no faith that this won't happen again.

Engine would not start. When pressing the start button, engine would turn over but would only rough idle for a few moments then turn off. Called garage and had vehicle towed. Mechanic advised computer showed defective fuel pump power control module. Mechanic advised gm has recall n212332040 for defective fuel pump power control module but my VIN is not included. Mechanic ordered fuel pump power control module from gm and replaced on my vehicle. This corrected the problem. I am requesting my VIN to be added to the recall and gm to pay for the part, labor and towing.

Vehicle has 10,800 miles. The vehicle repeatedly failed to start. Towed to gm dealership. They say the fuel pump has failed. They say it is not covered (beccause my VIN isn't within the recalls that already exist for this exact same problem). The cost is over $1,200. I contacted chevy corporate and they offered to cover 30%. The dealership is still awaiting the part(s) with no provided delivery date. This could have caused a serious mv accident if it had failed while driving. The vehicle gave no warning of this failure.

It’s happened about 10 times since I’ve owned the car but the dealer can’t recreate it so we are out of luck. The vehicle accelerates on its own. Scenario 1…with constant light steady acceleration, it will lurch forward like I’ve stomped on the accelerator a bit, for about a second then go back to my normal input. Scenario 2, same lurch but this time while coming to a stop at a stop sign with my foot on the brake pedal only. Scenario 3…I’ve been using the adaptive cruise control and had it disengaged by braking, coming to a stop, then parking and turning the vehicle off. Then after getting back in and starting up and slowly pulling forward, the cruise control suddenly and abruptly renegages and attempts to accelerate to the last demanded setpoint. Image this scenario pulling out of a spot at a crowded gas station with pedestrians. I almost ran someone the hell over just now at the gas station and I’ve had enough. The dealer won’t do anything and when I called chevy engineering they put zero effort into it, it was a 20 second phone call stating if it can’t be reproduced at the dealer there’s nothing they can do. This is absolutely completely 100% dangerous and unacceptable.

In September 2024, our vehicle was unable to be start with engine light on. We were unable to get the car into drive or neutral. We were forced to pay out of pocket to have the car towed to dealer, which it needed to be dragged onto the tow truck. Upon inspection at the dealership we were told it was the fuel pump control module that failed and needed to be replaced. They searched recalls and found none on our vehicle but did comment they are replacing these a lot on same type of vehicle. The part was out of stock & backordered likely due to multiple issues, and took 2 weeks to arrive. Reviewing online many have experienced same issue while driving, luckily, we were not. There is an open recall on this part for many models of the same year and time, but for one reason or another our vehicle is not part of that recall #21v739000 / gm #n212332040. The replacement was covered under warranty but does not cover the tow of almost $300.

Stopped for gas, then proceeded to leave store, the check engine light came on, and car immediately shut off while on the highway going ~25mph. Car would not turn back on, and then lights for fuel machine error started coming on. Car sat there trying to turn on, lights off, and then would say push start button, but nothing happened. Car began to shake and continued to try to turn on, yet nothing happened. Car was towed to home, sat for an hour and then started again, check engine light remains on.

Driving on the I-95 I abruptly lost power driving in the left lane, rpm dropped all the way down and speed was rapidly decreasing. I had to pull over on the shoulder in the most safe manner possible for myself and other drivers on the road; but it was not without any risk. The body of the car was rattling on my way to the shoulder and the car shut off before I could put the car in park in a safe place. With my hazard lights on I tried restarting the car but the enging would not turnover, the starter would run and the car would rattle about all whilst creating a traffic jam. Once I noticed the engine light and yielded to the car's inabiltiy to start up, we got the attention of a fhp state trooper who called in a tow truck for us. Getting te car onto the tow truck in traffic also increased the risk associated for everyone involved. Aftert succesfully oading the car, which was no smooth task as the car could not shift into neutral; we took the car to my local firestone. After a diagnostic test done the following morning, we were notified of a fuel pump issue that has been on the recall list for my vehicle, but not associated with my VIN.

Engine began to stall while driving or would not restart after parking. Happened one time while driving on highway [xxx]. Towed to dealer. Same fuel pump issue as recall n212332040 however that build date window closed March 4 2021 and my Tahoe was built in June 2021. Several times over the last month, or so, my 2021 Tahoe has hesitated to accelerate while driving. On 7/31/2024 the vehicle was in park, turned on when the vehicle began idling very hard, shaking the entire vehicle. The engine was turned off and restarted approximately 10min later. I began driving when the vehicle began shaking, the engine light came on, and the engine then turned off while in drive, actively driving down the road (with my child in the vehicle). I coasted into a parking lot and attempted to restart the engine several times, without luck. After sitting for approximately 45min the engine restarted, and I was able to get home. The engine stopped and restarted several more times that evening, without issue. The engine light turned off. The following day the vehicle ran without issue, no engine light on. We took the Tahoe to total performance repair shop where they ran a diagnostic scan of warning light history. The diagnostic scan came back with codes p023f and p129f; fuel pump issues. There is currently a recall for fuel pump module failure on some 2021 chevy Tahoe vehicles. My specific vehicle is not included in the recall but is experiencing the recalled issues.

Other vehicles of my year and make were recalled. My car was manufactured 8/14/21. I was driving on 6/12/24 and my car died. I had power. I had fuel but fuel was not getting to the engine. It turns out it was the fuel pump control module that many others were recalled. This could have been a very unsafe situation for me as it died in a traffic lane during morning rush hour. It would not start back up for me. My dealer diagnosed it very quickly and is repairing it in 2 days time. Had I been on the freeway, someone would have rearended me. My car has 22,000 miles on it.

I was parked with engine on idling and the engine shut off. Tried to restart and it started shaking very rough idle, I turned off and tried to restart it would not start, I tried again and it started shaking again and shit off but the displays stayed on in the car. I called the chevy dealer and had it towed to them. They ran diagnostics and confirmed it was an internal short inside fuel pump driver control module. They replaced and tested functional now. This is the second time they have replaced this part. The first time was last year driving when the engine decelerated and shut off. This is a safety issue and could be hazardous. My concern is this will happen again and I could be put in a very dangerous situation. I saw a bulletin issued for my vehicle with the same type of issue but my vehicle was not recalled to address product safety recall n212332040 stall while driving copyright 2021 general motors. When turning left in cross traffic, the truck stalled. It would crank and try to run, but not start as it wasn't getting any gas. The gas tank was full at the time. The failure was very similar to when I was stranded with the fuel issue in 2021 a couple of months before the recall for the fuel pump failure was issued (ntsa # 21v739000). Fortunately, it did start momentarily so that I could get out of oncoming traffic so that I wasn't t-boned. I was able to get it home, but it failed multiple times in the 8 mile trip back to the house. We will not drive this vehicle as it is unsafe to drive and now we are left to tow the vehicle to the closest dealership which is 50+ miles away. It seems this part only works a few years and then fails.

Service engine light came on, took it to Chevrolet dealership (2 months outside warranty). They found p2459 for regeneration frequency, performed necessary dpf regeneration procedure and was successful in completing and regeneration event, applied smoke to exhaust system for testing purposes and found large exhaust leak at rear tail pipe connection necessary to install new graphite seal and clamp. Also, found coolant leak at rear of engine on passenger side, upon further inspection found egr cooler coolant hose's actively leaking. Necessary to replace hose's at this time. They do not want to release the vehicle back to us for “safety” reasons, while a part has been back ordered for 6 weeks. Doing some research, it appears there has been a trend of issues with the exhaust tail pipe, which is excluded also from extended warranty. I’m surprised, given the frequency of this on a newer vehicle that it has not yet been recalled. The coolant hose is a different issue, but likewise surprised it is not recalled.

My car suddenly stopped while driving on the highway , no warning signs I had to be towed . My car in now at the chevy dealership, was told was " fuel system issue".

As a traffic crash reconstructionist, the issue is a major safety issue. My wife was exiting a residential driveway when the vehicle started to stutter and immediately shut down with no power or any capability to get the vehicle off the road. The shutdown caused the blockage of a residential street on a Friday afternoon, until the correct tow truck arrived. This was due to the fact the vehicle could not be moved due to not being able to start the engine nor the ability to place the vehicle into neutral, without starting the engine or crawling un der it with tools. It was determined the fuel module went bad. There was no warning of the failure of the component. Luckily the shut down of all components of the vehicle did not occur on a high speed or highly traveled road since I did not have any control of the vehicle after the fuel module failed. This is not the first report of the issue to NHTSA. Hopefully something will happen to find a fix to put the vehicle in neutral without tools, for the safety of the motoring public.

The fuel pump power control module failed. We were driving on the interstate going around 75mph with traffic. The car suddenly lost power dropped to 60, 40, 20 in 5 seconds. We barley made if off the hwy`s left side when the Tahoe died. Would not start back up and locked in park. Had to be towed on a flat bed dragged up the bed and brought to the chevy dealer who confirmed the fuel pump power control module failed and replaced under warranty. We have a 2021 Tahoe, there is a recall for this part but it did not include our VIN. Really scary breakdown and could have been hit by another car.

The vehicle stalled without warning, while driving. After taking it to the dealership they said it’s the fuel pump power control module. After further research I see this has been under recall, however, my VIN doesn’t show a recall for this.

While sitting at a stop sign the vehicle began to stall. I was able to drive 50 feet and it died in the road. The Tahoe is not getting fuel to start. Starter continues to try and engage upon start but the vehicle never engage. The fuel pump drive module seems to be an issue. I can't get the car out of park to have it towed to the Chevrolet dealership. This is consistent with other Tahoe recall vehicles having the same issue.

Vehicle is sputtering and jerking while driving when slowing to a stop vehicles engine will shut off. I do know that the 2021 Tahoe has recalls on the fuel pump issues but not sure why my VIN number isn’t covered under this recall. This is a 2 year old vehicle and already has recalls on this year model on its fuel pump. At this point it is barely driveable and is a danger for myself and my family to drive.

Fuel pump module malfunctioned while driving, causing vehicle to shut down in middle of street. Very alarming when car died while driving, fortunately was not driving at a high speed or on a busy street/highway and was able to move to an exit lane without incident since no shoulder on street, did cause quite a traffic jam (very stressful). Vehicle was towed to dealership after could not be jumped started. Dealership confirmed faulty fuel pump module. Currently at dealership & will be for a while due to part backlog. Received no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to this incident.

On Wednesday,sept20 2023 I was traveling eastbound in the passing lane on interstate 90 in new york when my chevy Tahoes motor began shaking violently, chugging, and losing power. The check engine light illuminated. The engine stalled as I frantically tried to move to the berm. There is a lot of large semi traffic on that road and I had a difficult time maneuvering safely without power to get onto the side of the road. I was unable to move completely into what I felt to be a safe area. I continued to try to start the motor after about 10 minutes I was finally able to get it started and move it to an exit where it was towed to community Chevrolet in meadville pennsylvania. The chevy dealer at this point has told me it is a fuel pump problem and they are on back order and there is a strike by the auto workers. They are unsure as to when I can have this problem remedied with the parts that are needed.

We were driving down the road and as I tried to accelerate the car would not go. Then I realized the car said push to start. My husband tried to push the neutral button and told me to restart it but I said you have to push the brake. All this is happening as we are coasting down a main road with speed limits of 55mph and my family is in the vehicle (including 2 toddlers in the back seat). Once we coast to a gravel area off the road I push the brakes and try to restart. My dash goes all black and I try to restart. It tells me battery low push to start. The starter engages and stays engaged until I push the start button again to turn off. The screen tells me it is shutting down functions to save battery. The check engine light is on. We tried 3x with same results. Finally we get out and my parents come to us. Within 15 mins of the initial incident, my husband and dad get in and start my vehicle. My dad suspected the fuel pump. The fuel was right under 1/4 tank but not low enough for the fuel light to be on. They drove to the fuel station, approximately 2 miles away, filled up the tank and drove it to an auto parts store who connected it to a diagnostic machine and it read fuel pump. They drove it back to my home, approximately 2 more miles. The check engine light is still on. I will call the dealership tomorrow. The vehicle has 23,000 miles and is still under manufacturer warranty.

My wife was driving our vehicle and had (fortunately) just turned onto our quiet street. As she was heading towards our driveway, the car turned off. We couldn’t figure out the issue. After paying for a tow to sterling Chevrolet in mount pleasant, SC, we learned that the fuel pump system had died. This was at 36,071 miles (71 miles over our warranty). We were then told that there had not been a safety recall on the fuel system for our 2021 Tahoe z71. It wasn’t until later that we learned there had been a recall and I’m not sure how to handle this. The recall occurred before we took possession of the vehicle (8 months before), thus we were never notified. Per the maintenance records, the fuel system had never been repaired nor was a part replaced on this vehicle. Thus, I believe our vehicle would roll up under this recall and we should be reimbursed for the repair expense.

Sudden engine shutdown in the middle of traffics. Vehicle was towed to a Chevrolet dealer. Chevrolet dealer replaced fuel pump power control module.

On may 14, 2023 I was on a trip driving the Tahoe (midnight blue Tahoe in the pictures) about 60 mph, on highway 41 (middle of nowhere, no cell reception) south of kettleman city, CA when, without any warning or symptoms of any problem whatsoever, the engine lost propulsion and died. I was able to coast onto the shoulder and tried starting it. It started again and I continued driving and about 35 minutes later I stopped at a red light on highway 41 in lemoore, CA. Again the Tahoe engine died without warning and would not restart. When I tried starting it I could smell a burning smell. The engine cranked but wouldn’t start, and then the check engine light came on. I was at a stoplight on a major highway and was unable to move the vehicle, and was scared to sit in it, so I put on the vehicle hazard lights, got out of the car and ran to the side of the road for safety. Luckily I did not have my children with me. I called 911 and a police officer came and parked behind my vehicle with his lights on so hopefully no other vehicles would hit it. A tow truck was immediately dispatched as high priority by the police. I had it towed to hedricks Chevrolet dealership in clovis, California, who informed me there was metal parts in the oil and that the engine was destroyed and had to be replaced. It took several months to get the engine replaced and in the meantime, I bought a new 2023 Cadillac escalade so I would have a vehicle to drive. The Cadillac escalade ended up having an extremely similar problem (and I will file a separate report for that vehicle). A few months later when the Tahoe replacement engine was installed I picked up the Tahoe from the dealership and sold it to carmax.

My Tahoe was running fine and then when I shut it off and returned 30 minutes later it would not start. I had it towed to a nearby dealership and I was told that several similar incidents have happened with my make and model where the fuel pump control module went bad. A technician replaced the module while it was in the tow truck so it could be unloaded and it started up. I was told that gm is aware of the issue and I have not heard about it and believe there should be a recall to replace these faulty modules.

I was driving the vehicle and it suddenly lost power - going from 55 mph down to 0 then the engine just stopped. No warning lights went off, no stalling, no engine noise- completely lost power. Would not start after that for 20 minutes. Started after 20 minutes- and ran fine -like nothing happened. Had it towed to dealership where they diagnosed the problem as electrical. Two weeks later still waiting for the part. Dealer says it could be up to 3 months before they could locate the part.

Fuel pump control module diagnosed by the Chevrolet dealer in iowa city, IA (billion chevy). We were on the interstate when the vehicle decelerated rapidly while passing a semi tractor trailer. I was able to control the vehicle and move to the right lane after the semi trailer went by and other cars moved back quickly. No warning light until the incident.

Without warning the engine shut off and lost power while driving. The engine light came on. I was able to pull over to the side of the road. I'm glad I wasn't at interstate speeds, that would of been bad. It was like I ran out of fuel. It was the fuel pump power control module according to the dealership.

Car stalled while driving on the highway, no warning, car became unresponsive and we almost had an accident attempting to move car off the highway. This was an extreme safety risk. Car was dead, unable to start. Towed car to dealership, told it was the fuel control module that was not working. Found out this was a known issue for 2021 Tahoe, no recall was issued for my vehicle, no one notified or warned me of the risk.

On November 9th, 2022 my wife was returning from the store when our Tahoe lost power and the engine shut off. She was able to pull off the highway onto a side street prior to the engine shutting off. I met her at that spot to see what was going on with the vehicle. The car was parked on a slight hill and after checking the oil and other fluids I could not see an issue with the car and the car would still not start. I was able to tow the car to a flat spot and checked the fluids again. After about 45 minutes the car did restart with the check engine light on. We were able to get the vehicle to an auto shop about a 1/4 mile down the road where they were able to hook up their reader and see what the check engine light was for. A code of p129f came up which is the fuel pump module, pictures attached of screen. We then were able to get the car home and it was towed to a chevy dealership the following day. There techs were able to find a recall number of 21v739000 which was issued on 9-23-2021 showed that this happened in certain 2021 Tahoe's. While our VIN number did not fit into the VIN numbers on the recall number I still feel this was the issue. I feel this could be a bigger safety issue with other vehicles on the road that did not fit into that recall could still have the issue. While we were lucky and know one was injured the next people may not be so lucky. Also since our Tahoe was not in the range of VIN numbers on the recall we are being forced to pay out of pocket 521. 81. Which I will be fighting Chevrolet to pay us back.

Recently, while idling in parking space the vehicle stalled and engine and fuel lights came on. The vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer, and the diagnosis was a failure of the fuel pump control module. The vehicle has less than 10,500 miles. The dealer stated that over the last four days, two other vehicles were brought in for the same issue.

First fuel system failure occurred at ~3500 miles. Pulled out of driveway, shifted into drive and vehicle stalled and would not restart. Fuel pump replaced first then fuel module replaced resolving issue. Now at 12,100, vehicle again shut down at a major intersection and would not start. Vehicle has been towed to dealership. The vehicle failure mechanism locks the car in park and leaves all electronics powered on. Fortunately I was able to get the front wheels strait during one sputtering start attempt so it could be dragged straight onto the tow truck. Able to power off radio and ac but no other electronics would shutdown, dash display, resulting in total battery drain. Can only lock drivers door with key so vehicle is outside dealer service center on a weekend unlocked. This the second failure of the same component. This abrupt failure creates a completely unsafe situation leaving you stranded unable to move. This vehicle is an expensive failure and based on a second recurrence, the related electronic component issue has not been resolved. First occurrence Chevrolet provided a free year of onstar due to me not feeling safe with this vehicle. Now just after this expired, the same failure has occurred. Buy this vehicle back from me Chevrolet at my purchase price. First occurrence took 3 hrs for a tow truck to pick up the car which was fortunately in middle of my street. This current failure was 2. 5 hrs stuck at a stop sign in the middle of a major intersection. Thank god I was not on the interstate.

I encountered the same issue which most of the other complaints on here saw where the engine lost power (due to one cylinder misfiring) suddenly and it was due to a faulty lifter in the engine. Fortunately, I was able to limp the vehicle back to my house where it could be towed, but had it been worse it could've stalled in an intersection and I'd be unable to move the vehicle due to how the engine must be running in order to put it in neutral. Gm really needs to recall the engines that are affected by the lifter problem as this issue is showing up on several forums online along with this site. My engine date code falls within their TSB, however they only replaced one bank due to my mileage being over 8,000 miles. That means that I most likely get to look forward to more issues soon with the other bank of lifters as they're of the same faulty design.
