34 problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Letter from senator toomey on behalf of constituent re chevy Trailblazer repairs that should be reimbursed. The fuel pump was replaced.
I was dropping the family off at a birthday party before going into work. The family kept complaining about the strong gas fumes. The smell was extremely overpowering. When I arrived at work, I noticed that it looked like gas was leaking around the middle of the gas tank, on top. Then, the gauge started not registering when gas was being put in. It is also very hard to start up. The vehicle takes 2 cranks before it will actually start up. When I asked a mechanic what it could possibly be, he stated that the Trailblazers are known for having an exposed area on top of tank that gets corroded and that the fuel pump and fuel sending unit would have to be replaced. The estimate was for $700-800 dollars. I cannot continue driving until it is repaired, otherwise, someone will flick a cigarette out window and the Trailblazer will blow up.
Had to replace fuel tank because filler neck cracked due to being brittle had to replace fuel pump due to top rusting out and causing a gas leak I received a large bill to replace these parts and expected them to last longer then 8 years.
I have a 2003 chevy Trailblazer ext the fuel pump module has started to corrode, I knew something was wrong because of the strong oder of gasoline inside the vehicle and further investigation showed a leak of gas also. This is in addition to our gas gauge not working for the last 3 years. Upon talking to multiple rep's, gm claims they sent out letters in 2007 alerting the consumer to a potential problem. I am the second owner of this vehicle. I purchased this vehicle in September 2005. Gm stated that letters do get lost in the mail, when I stated we were not made aware of this situation. I was never informed of this potential hazard waiting to happen. Gm claims the service bulletin had parameters of 10 years or a 120, 000 miles which ever comes first. I have been in contact with the rep several times, and have not been successful. I do have 149,000 plus miles on this vehicle. I took the truck to the local dearlship, they were claiming nothing has ever been documented on this type of vehicle. This is when I did my own research and found the service bulletin as mentioned above and the complaints of this same problem all through the internet blogs. It seems we are not getting anywhere and would appreciate some condsideration from gm and taking part of the responsibility for this problem. We had our children in this car when the gas was leaking out, what if it would have caught on fire? I would like to contact our regional representative for gm.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact smelled a fuel odor and noticed fuel spilling underneath the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the steel air bolts from the fuel pump were covered with rust. The contact called the manufacturer who stated that he had to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. Filled tank, strong gasoline smell, check engine light came on, took to local gm dealer. Fueltank leaking at filler neck. Would not let me leave ,too dangerous!! replaced fuel pump and tank, $2000. Repair!!! gm will not cover because it states it does not cover texas.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the service engine light was illuminated when he started the vehicle. Two weeks after noticing the check engine light, he smelled strong gas fumes. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the dealer dropped the fuel tank and found all types of fuel spraying from it. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was caused by the fuel pump. The contact called the manufacturer who told him that someone would contact him within two business days to discuss the expenses of the repair. The vehicle had not been repaired when the complaint was filed. The VIN was unavailable. The current and failure mileages were approximately 60,000.
I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer v6 LS. I always noted the presence of an odor of gas especially when filling up my vehicle, it grew progressively worse over a two year time frame. Then in July of 2009 the check engine light would come on and go off. I noticed gas dripping from the underside near the gas tank! finally evidence of a leak! a very strong smell of gas and took it to my service garage. The examined the problem and told me I needed a new fuel pump assembly. They repaired it to the tune of $680 dollars. 4 weeks later I was back, still smelling gas. They had to drop the tank again and replace the assembly unit gasket. I think this may be a wide spread problem not just limited to me.
Smell of gas developed around vehicle at all times. Had it looked at and nothing was found. Brought it to another shop and they dropped out the fuel tank, finding the top of the tank wet with fuel and the connection rusted. The solution was to replace the fuel pump and parts.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving 55 mph, the contact was notified of a fuel leak by a fellow driver. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the gas tank was corroded. The gas tank was replaced at the cost of $1,000. The contact filed a report with the manufacturer. The current and failure mileages were 65,000. Updated 08/15/08 the fuel pump module was replaced because it had rusted out. Updated 08/15/08.
I have intermittent smell of fuel coming from vehicle; consistently declining mpg; ses light coming on; taken it to the dealership after having received a letter stating that there was a fuel tank or pump issue; they diagnosed that the filler neck was cracked a nd leaking but stated that it wasn't part of the repairs from the letter and said it would cost a $1000 to replace my fuel tnk and then they would replace the fuel pump module for free.
I filled my gas tank on my 2003 chevy Trailblazer ext. And got a gas smell, shortly after the check engine light came on. There is a leak in the fill and fuel pump area I guess. I was referred to see if there were any recalls for this defect and came across this. The garage did a temp. Repair with silicon that only lasted 3 weeks. Now the same thing is happening. I would have to change the entire gas tank to fix this issue.
Fuel leak from the fuel pump module in my 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. I recently had the fuel tank replaced because of a vapor leak causing the check engine warning light to activate. When I picked up the vehicle I detected a strong gasoline smell and was just now told that the top of the fuel pump module was badly corroded with gas leaking through it. Warranty will not cover the replacement as the module is still working. This is either a faulty design, or substandard materials are being used for this part as this vehicle is not all that old, and this condition is presenting a serious hazard with the gas and gas vapors leaking from the fuel tank.
The fuel pump sending unit on my 2003 chevy Trailblazer developed corrosion and leaked fuel from the unit. The cost of the repair was $592.
I recently had my fuel tank replace now I hear knocking and I understand that the fuel pump have been damage because of this. GMC needs to look into this as a recall.
Fuel system fuel pump module had corrosion and leaked gas, had to replace.
Fuel was leaking on the ground.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. The contact smelled fuel inside the passenger compartment when the engine was started. There were no warning lights. The dealer stated that there was a fuel leak from the fuel sending unit. The failure was caused by a cracked and corroded line. The fuel pump module was replaced. The current and failure mileages were 60,000. Updated 03-05-08.
Fuel tank sending unit lines corroded and leaking.
I got a strong smell of gasoline in my 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. I stopped at a garage and they looked at it and said the fuel line was either busted or corroded. They could not fix it right away, but said they didn't think the fuel line on a 2003 vehicle should be rusted. The gas was pouring out underneath the vehicle causing a fire hazard. I called the local Chevrolet dealer and they could not fix it either, but they informed me that it would be rusted through that they are replacing a lot of them and also brake lines. I ask if there was a recall for this on the vehicle, and he said no it's just the ice melting materials they use on the roads around here. The gas tank has to be removed and the lines need replaced. The garage that is doing the work says that the fuel pump and filter should be replaced while the tank is down. I don't believe a four year old car should have fuel lines and brake lines rusting out like that. I think it is an engineering mistake on the materials these lines are made from. I am sure a lot of other people have spent large sums of money to repair this problem and if my complaint can get a recall started that would benefit all Trailblazer owners.
2003 chevy Trailblazer ext ? smelled gas, no visual sign of leaking, smell got continuously worse and could smell in the cabin. Then you could see gas dripping from the tank. Had to have the fuel sending unit replaced. This is a very serious problem and we were fortunate that no one got hurt. Feel this is a poor design for the vehicle and it should be recalled before someone gets seriously hurt or killed. This failure occurred around 46,000 miles.
The smell of gas coming into vehicle, and leaking onto ground underneath. Had fuel pump module (fuel sending unit) changed.
I smelled a strong odor of gasoline, and had fuel leaking from the gas tank. I was afraid to keep driving it like that, I took it to get repaired. The service technician had to replace the sending unit module, part # mu1377. He said it was corroded.
After fueling smelled a fuel odor when none was spilled.
Vehicle would emit a strong fuel odor upon being started. After idling for a short period of time small puddles of gasoline were present beneath the undercarriage of the vehicle dirctly below the fuel tank.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. The contact opened the rear hatch and heard a cracking noise coming from the top. Approximately three to four days later the contact noticed that the center high mounted stop lamp bracket failed. The vehicle was brought to the dealer simmons-rockwell Chevrolet. The dealer took the vehicle to another mechanic, and informed the contact that the failure was typical for that type of vehicle and was indeed a safety issue. The mechanic stated that the entire center high mounted stop lamp could become detached while driving and strike another vehicle. The contact found another complaint online with odi # 10061979. The contact filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and was given case # 71-500170558. Also, the contact stated the fuel system failed. In January of 2007, the contact detected an aroma of gas while driving the vehicle. The odor became increasingly potent, and the vehicle was taken to the dealer, who stated that the fuel pump module was corroded and leaked. And the dealer quoted a repair price of $800. The fuel pump filter was repaired, and after serious negotiations, the contact was only required to pay $196. 00. The contact searched online ,and found an open investigation , pe07013 from NHTSA dated March 12, 2007 for the fuel system. The failure mileage was 42,229.
2003 chev Trailblazer 52,000 miles. Fuel spraying from under the vehicle when it is running. Diagnosed as fuel pump housing corroded. Complaint filed with Chevrolet for warranty replacement. Request denied, had pump replaced at local shop. Did not keep old part, can get affidavit from repair shop.
I purchased a used vehicle from upstate Chevrolet in attica NY 14011 and the second month of ownership this vehicle was leaking gasoline. The fuel pump was leaking pushing gasoline out. Vehicle was repaired for $670 all at my cost. Checking with a parts store it was found to be a problem that is common of these vehicles. My vehicle is less than four years old. It is a 2003 chevy Trailblazer and was repaired on 12/27/06.
I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer ext. I began smelling gas, and soon after noticed it leaking from my vehicle. After taking it into my local dealership it was found that my fuel module and gas lines needed to be replaced because of corrosion. Because of the word corrosion it then voided being covered under my extended warranty. The SUV sat at the dealership for 5 weeks because of a national backorder on the fuel lines. So, with having no vehicle rental would not be covered because it was not warranty work. I was stuck with a $900. 00 bill on a vehicle that was three and a half years old.
I own a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. I smelled a strong odor of gas emanating from my vehicle recently. After some investigating, I discovered that there was fuel leaking out of the top of my fuel tank only while the engine was running. I dropped the fuel tank and discovered that the metal nipples from the top of the fuel pump that connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump were completely rusted and when the vehicle was running, fuel was jetting all over the under carriage of my vehicle. The metal ring that holds the fuel pump to the tank was also severely rusted. Gm should know better than to put exposed metal fittings in a recessed tank where it is subject to rust, salt, corrosion etc. I had to replace the fuel pump at a significant cost. I also believe that this could be a potential fire hazard as the fuel was jetting all over the undercarriage and its proximity to the exhaust. My fittings were so brittle that you could crush them with your bare hands. Left unchecked, undoubtedly I would have experienced a loss of power and would have been a hazard to the other vehicles on the road-yet alone probably would have been stranded when the vehicle died. The old parts are available for inspection. A fuel pump should last more that (3) years in my opinion. This is a design and/or product failure.
Smell of fuel after driving. Fuel leaking in vicininty of gas tank onto driveway. Brought 2003 Trailblazer for servicing. Fuel pump was leaking fuel where connected to sending unit. Fuel pump replaced. Original sending unit transferred onto new pump. Parts cost $500. 00 and labor $180.
2003 Trailblazer fuel line and fuel pump rusted and began to leak fuel. The fuel pump had to be replaced at a cost of 800. 00 dollars. The filler neck was leaking at the fuel tank. The front pinion axle seal was leaking and the front stabilizer links were replaced.
: the contact stated after attempting to start the engine, a strong odor of gasoline was present. After smelling the gasoline, no further attempt was made to start the vehicle. The next day the contact managed to start the vehicle with the odor of gasoline present. The vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop who discovered the fuel pump was cracked and leaking gasoline. The repair shop suggested replacing the fuel pump. Updated 01/25/06.
When filling the fuel tank on 2003 Trailblazers with fuel pump equipped with "accordion" neck sleeves, fuel has the possibility of back flushing out the top of the tank neck. I experience this on multiple gas stations here in California with multiple 2003 Trailblazers. About 1 cup of gasoline flows over the intake and on to the car and ground causing a serious hazard. The back flow spill does not seem to occur on every type of fuel pump, but only on those equipped with certain sleeves over the nozzle. Other Trailblazer owners I have talked to in my area also experience this problem. The dealer has not only not been able to duplicate the problem at their local station but has no remedy for the multiple times we have brought the vehicle in for service.
