Additionally, there were several error codes provided through the mobile app for engine-related failures. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

3 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2026

I am reporting a series of safety concerns regarding my 2017 chevy Volt, which have persisted despite multiple attempts to address them with the dealership. These issues pose significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. On January 18th, 2024, I brought my vehicle to the dealer after experiencing reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination of the check engine light. The mechanic performed a quick inspection and used a gm scan tool to diagnose the issue, revealing the code p1e00 for the hybrid powertrain control module 2, which was cleared without a thorough investigation. I was advised to return if the issue reoccurred. Despite the reset, the problem persisted, and on February 9th, 2024, I scheduled another appointment due to my chevy Volt's high Voltage battery charging only to 65% capacity despite indicating a full charge. Subsequently, on February 11th, 2024, the check engine light illuminated again, and on February 12th, 2024, November 25th, 2025, January 11th, 2026, and February 12, 2026 while driving to work, both times I experienced a loss of propulsion power on the highway, placing my safety at risk and lost all power in a traveling lane of traffic. These ongoing issues with propulsion power and the high-voltage battery charging system are not only inconvenient but also potentially dangerous. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and attempts to diagnose and resolve the problem, it persists, indicating a systemic issue that requires immediate attention. The reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination, I urge the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly to ensure the safety of chevy Volt drivers and passengers. It is imperative that general motors addresses these issues promptly and implements appropriate measures to prevent further incidents.

5 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2025

My 2017 Chevrolet Volt is experiencing "a malfunction involving the battery energy control module (becm)" as diagnosed by the davis-moore dealership. This failure of the becm has now caused "a reduced power mode, a no start condition, or a no charge condition". The car currently does not start or charge. My vehicle has be diagnosed as needing a becm replacement at a Chevrolet dealership. The vehicle is currently inoperable as it will not charge, it will not engage the electric drive mode, and it will not engage the range extender (engine). The car does not start. Gm is showing that there is no active recall or special warranty for my vehicle, however, I believe special warranty n23243268 should apply.

6 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/30/2025

Portion message car stalled on hey.

7 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2025

My experience required me to tow my 2017 chevy Volt from a parking garage, where the becm died, to 2 different dealerships back and forth to my home. I have been charged over $1,000 in towing and diagnostics at my local dealerships. As usual they informed that I need a new $10k battery. I did my own research and the error codes (u2603, u2604, u2605, u2606, u2617, u2618, u2619, u2620, u2621, u2622, u2623, u2624 and p1e00) clearly indicate that my becm failed. I was able to check the health and status of the traction battery and it functioning correctly. On my 3rd trip to my local dealership service department with the special coverage program n232432680 in hand, the dealership informed me that yes my bcm had failed and there was a special coverage program for 2016-2019 chevy Volts, but that my VIN number was not covered. There were a limited number of vins that received warranty extensions for becm, but mine was not.

8 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2025

While driving the vehicle, the car shut down. Thankfully I was coming to a yield at a round about after exiting the interstate. I was finally able to get it to restart and proceeded on my way. If this had happened on the interstate myself, and other drivers would be at risk due to unassisted steering and braking. I also have experienced intermittent periods of "reduction of power" while on the interstate and other 55mph plus highways. This presents a hazard to myself and other drivers as well. These issues are covered for similar vehicles under special warranty coverage n232432680 as required by NHTSA on March 6, 2024. My vehicle also exhibits all of the primary symptoms described in that coverage, but gm claims that my vehicle is not covered. Cel is on. Can't charge condition reduced power no start condition.

9 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2025

There was a recall for the hpcm2 where the propulsion power reduced warning would come on whenever the car's cell battery was depleted. This happened with my car and there were several times it slowed on the freeway and on exit ramps as I tried to safely get my car off the road. It first happened on 4/13/25. I took my car to a regular mechanic who charged me 3k of repairs on basic maintenance, new tires, etc but were unable to fix this issue. They advised it was a manufacturer issue and to go to a hybrid specialist or a dealership. I called a hybrid specialist who found the faulty code and advised the same. I took my car to felix Chevrolet (3330 s. Figueroa st. La, CA 90007) and they offered to do many maintenance service items that I had done earlier this week in an attempt to fix the hpcm2 software bug. After I told them that the maintenance items were complete, they called me back an hour later to tell me I needed other maintenance repairs that are less common. When I gave them the description of the recall and re-explained this is identical to my car's symptoms and that this manufacturing issue may have affected other vehicles like mine that were outside of the recall batch, they told me it was impossible to apply this diagnosis as long as my VIN number was outside of the recall batch. Can you please add my VIN to this recall or have my car reviewed by someone who can debug the software?.

10 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2025

My car needs an egr valve replacement and this is a known and common problem with this car and now they are trying to charge me outrageous prices for an issue that they know is defective. The becm , the egr valve, and the shift to park. Need to be recognized as recalls.

11 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

13 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2024

My car stopped all of a sudden and lost power while my wife was driving. She could've been in a major accident since the car lost power. This has happened a few times in the past. Luckily she wasn't on the freeway or she could've been rear ended at highway speeds. There were warning lamps that said check engine and "lost propulsion". This should be looked at closely as my safety as well as the safety of others was at risk. Very dangerous situation! I had my car towed to the nearest auto repair shop where it is being looked at.

14 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2024

I was driving at about 50mph all of a sudden I got a propulsion error and my car stopped working it had no power! people had to swerve around me and I was almost hit. My car would not drive I shut it off and back on multiple times. Finally it started but would not go above 25 it was so scary. I went to the dealership they said it’s known issue since 2016 and that my miles were too high so it would not be covered to fix the total amount it almost 3,000 this seems unfair that chevy would continue to sell a vehicle knowing it had issues with a energy control module and not fix it for free. Especially when you could be killed while driving it!!.

15 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2024

While operating my chevy Volt on a los angeles freeway, warning lights came on informing me to park immediately, and that the power propulsion was reduced. The check engine light also came on. At that point the “shift to park” message came on. My car is experiencing the “shift to park” issue. I already had this happen previously in 2023. The repair cost $1,200. There are many, many references to this issue on the internet. The “shift to park” defect is well known in the chevy Volt community. When this happened the second time, ([xxx]), I was stranded on the side of an la freeway. The car will not start. It will cycle through the “shift to park” message on the dashboard and it will not go anywhere. The car initializes, so there is power in the vehicle, but no propulsion. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

16 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2024

Just purchased and not a week in it dies after I have charged it. I was in drive, at a red light when all of a sudden the car dies. No warning whatsoever. Was not able to turn it on afterwards. Had to get towed to my local Chevrolet dealership that has not been able to fix it for the last month with no eta on a fix.

17 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2024

I was driving on the interstate when my check engine light came on and the car told me it was going into reduced power mode. I then had to limp my car along on the interstate till I could get off the road, many close calls going 45-50 mph on a 70 mph road.

18 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the vehicle was lagging and hesitating before accelerating. The contact stated that an excessive amount of pressure was needed to depress the accelerator pedal while driving. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced reduced hybrid propulsion. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.

19 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2024

While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the check engine light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kw), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained. ) service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and check engine light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated for the morning of 8/7 (tomorrow, as of this writing). Car reached its destination without further incident. During return 170 mile trip on 8/5, traveling on the highway, car abruptly alerted that the engine was no longer available and entered a severely reduced-power mode. Car had been operating in "mountain mode" (conserving some extra battery charge) as a precaution, so we were able safely exit the highway and pull into a local parking lot, at which point aaa was contacted to tow the car the remaining 120 miles home. Upon arriving home, the car was able to pull into the garage without the "engine not available" alert, but still displaying check engine light and "propulsion power reduced" messages. We have come to understand this is a fairly common issue with generation ii Volts and have been advised by other owners to file this report.

20 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

In what appears to be (based on google search) hundreds of Volts have the failure whereby the erg valve fails, but gm is no longer making the part and has an indefinite date to produce them. When this part fails the engine light comes on the the vehicle is not allowed to go over 45 mph, creating a safety issue when on highways (I live rural, all all roads are over >=55 mph). Gm is unwilling to trade the car at fair value for a new one, nor willing to provide loaners. So the car can only sit in the garage with no resolution. Gm is aware of the issue, nut is unwilling to address.

21 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2024

On December 2023 the vehicle lost power and lost control while driving speed limit 55 mph followed by check engine light associated codes due to known issue with bcem controller failing. June 2024 vehicle experienced the same issue with duplicate check engine codes associated with prior issue. Dealer states the vehicle has a bad battery pack and has been there for over 8 months. Vehicle has a becm warranty due to a law suite filed and also has a battery pack warranty from gm that was extended for 150,000 miles or 10 years.

22 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2024

Driving at freeway speeds when suddenly the cars propulsion power failed and I went from 75mph to 45mph with no warning and no way to accelerate. Happened multiple times even after pulling over and turning the car on and off. I was told by the dealership that was a gas engine part and that I could drive it on the electrical engine only. When attempting to drive on the electrical engine, I received a notice of engine failure and had to coast into the driveway of a dealership. I was told the engine “could explode” if I continue to drive it.

23 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while her son was driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the battery system became inoperable. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cells and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed the contact that parts were on backorder. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.

24 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2024

Driving on the road with a near full electric battery and then lost most of my power and got this message on the dash along with a check engine light. "propulsion power is reduced" - I was in freeway traffic on a hill and had to put hazards on to move to the slow lane. Engine came on and seemed to be revving to full power to maintain speed.

25 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2024

Becm failure on car confirmed at 128,000 miles. While driving the car's check engine light came on; immediately followed by a message of reduced propulsion and the ev range dropping to 0. Vehicle switched to gas and ran very rough for a short distance to an available stop. Have been informed by dealership that the vehicle is now unsafe for driving due to a potential stall.

26 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

I was traveling at 75 mph with the cruise control on when a message came on about reduced purpulsion. My vehicle lost all power and rapidly decreased speed, the gas pedal did nothing until my speed had dropped under 60 mph. I was on the freeway and could have caused an accident. Chevrolet says a programming update was needed to fix the problem but my becm is now also out.

27 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2024

The Volts becm has failed. There are warning lights constantly warning about engine and low propulsion. There are multiple symptoms. Most serious is that car has stalled while driving 3 times. If I pull over, put in park, then turn off; I can restart the engine using battery mode. It does not drive well in gas mode where gas fuels generator to charge battery for propulsion. It is now very loud and often won't allow you to drive faster than 30 mph. The mileage diagnostics (mpg) are just over 50% of what they were before problem started. It often randomly switches from battery mode to gas. This is undesired. My problem is that the only certified tech is on other side of island volcano. I have no confidence that I can drive it to dealer, given the distance and power required to climb mountain. So, I am stuck with no way to fix. There are widespread reported issues, similar to mine, caused by defective becm (battery energy control module). Problem started September 2023 and have issues every day I dare drive it.

28 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2023

The latest episode with my 2017 chevy Volt is a culmination of years of issues with the low clearance on the vehicle causing continual damage and unsafe driving conditions that require expensive repairs due to the design flaw (note - I had a 2014 chevy Volt that had none of these problems). My son was driving the car a week ago and the engine control module (gm part # 12700116) fell out of the car. This led to the car to stop driving instantly - if he had been anywhere other than a quiet residential street it could have been catastrophic. Upon having towed the vehicle to the dealership, I was informed that the wiring harness failed which led to the ecm falling onto the street. I drive this car strictly in city limits and on major highways, and despite this the bottom undercarriage is constantly damaged because it is simply to low to the ground. In addition to the repair bill of $3k+ (my 4th repair required due to this defect), the harness isn't even available and gm cannot provide an eta for when it will be. I experienced a similar issue 6 months ago when a part was backordered for 3+ months and this is compounded by the fact that their dealerships no longer have loan car inventory. Note that there was no warning before this happened. I have tried escalating to gm but their response is essentially that I am sol. Again - this is a design flaw of the vehicle that should have been addressed but never was. Note that this doesn't include the other continual issues (well documented) that continue to plague the car after other recall service (loss of propulsion, shifter issues that frequently make it impossible to actually turn the car off, etc. ).

29 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2023

Upon starting vehicle and shifting to drive, vehicle gives message to "shift to park" and will do nothing else. Also, while battery is fully charged, vehicle will display "unable to charge" and show no mileage left on ev mode - then at times (but not always) upon starting vehicle, mileage increases to what it expected.

30 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2023

Any time the car switches from battery to gasoline the 12v battery comes on, I get the message to shift into park, and the car shuts off. This happens multiple times a day, making it difficult to drive long distance. It also makes it difficult to work more than a couple of hours at a time as an uber driver. It has happened on the highway, very dangerous.

31 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2023

While driving to work, the vehicle shook a bit and entered into "reduced propulsion mode". The vehicle had a significant reduction in engine power on the road (the propulsion became very jerky), which became dangerous on the highway. There were no previous indicators of any type of issue. After brining the vehicle to the dealership, I was told it would be okay to drive until my appointment (which was scheduled for the subsequent week). Two days later, the vehicle would not start. When attempting to start the car, the "shift to park" message displayed. I had to get the vehicle towed to the dealership at that point. The dealership mentioned it is likely an issue with the battery energy control module (becm). However, I'm still waiting for a resolution.

32 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

Egr valve failed causing walk home fuse to blow causing vehicle to shut down while driving. Check engine light did come on. The problem was reproducible as car would not start, egr valve needed replacement. I would like to add that the video on youtube on cleaning the egr valve for this car has 27000 views, with is more than 1/3 of the number of chevy Volts of this generation that have been sold. This is a serious and consistent issue.

33 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2023

Around the tenth of November my car, a 2017 premier Volt bought used, began to display an information message that the propulsion power is reduces. It displayed 0 mi ev range, even though I knew I had some left. When I started to drive the engine seemed louder than usual and the check engine light was on. I pulled into a parking lot, and checked under the hood just to make sure nothing was obviously smoking or sparking. I turned the car on and off, and drove around the parking lot a few times until it resumed normal functionality, however the check engine light remained. This was after dark, when I got off work, and I drive home on highway 49. I did not want to drive it home on the highway in the dark until the issue seemed resolved. Since the manual claimed that if I see both reduced propulsion and check engine light I should immediately take the car to my dealer, I made an appointment with them for the sixteenth of November. For the next couple days I continued to have the same issues, propulsion reduced, incorrectly displaying 0 ev miles, and the check engine light coming on. Starting and stopping the car, or driving around the parking lot a couple times seemed to temporarily solve the issues. At the dealer, I was told there is no eta on the part, and that it is back ordered or wait listed. The issue is with the bcem or battery energy control module. They provided me with a rental car for the time being. A few weeks have passed, so I called them today, the 11th of December, but there is still no eta. They are still waiting for the bcem, which is back ordered.

34 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

On 2 separate time periods, "propulsion power reduced" message appears on dash: - 1st incident in November 2022, car would not move after powering off the vehicle. After sitting idle for a week, decided to retry, and car seemed to work normally. Took it in to chevy service, they replaced the becm. Car worked fine after this - 2nd incident in November 2023, again 'propulsion power reduced' message appeared. This time, however, car would suddenly cut off gas engine (even at highway speed), switching to 100% battery mode, and displaying 'engine not available' on dashboard. Fuel level indicator would immediately display 'low' (even though gas tank was full). Reduced acceleration on battery mode. Car is now in same service center awaiting fix for the past month. Was quite an unsafe situation, especially at highway speeds, and especially given the fact that the battery also may have been at a low state of charge, risking complete vehicle breakdown. Coupled with both of these incidents, the cruise control intermittently shuts off, displaying 'cruise control unavailable'. Car is lightly utilized, with just over 30k miles on the odometer to date. Additionally, the car is kept in a mild climate (coastal southern California) and parked in a covered spot shielded from sun and temperature extremes.
