39 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/14/2023

The egr valve had failed, causing a check engine light, which turned into a blown fuse. The fuse blowing left the vehicle stranded until I unplugged the egr valve and replaced the fuse. I drove it to a shop, where they replaced the valve and the car has been functional since then.

40 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/11/2023

“shift to park” error. When attempting to park the vehicle, an ‘action required’ alert pops up on the dash advising to “shift to park” when the vehicle is already in park. The vehicle will not lock once this message is prompted.

41 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 06/14/2023

After looking up an issue with my Volt, I learned that this is a big safety issue and very common. When I put the car in park there is now an intermittent issue that says "shift to park" on the display and the car will not shut off, and I cant confirm that the car is actually in park.

43 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/16/2023

In 2020 my 2017 Chevrolet Volt had an intermittent problem turning off. My Chevrolet dealer worked to fix the problem. This March I had an accident which involved me thinking the car was shut down. I was half way out of the car when I realized it was moving. Before I could get completely in to apply the brakes, I had hit and pushed an object into a building which caused damage to the building and my car. The was a police report which states that I was at fault. My car was towed to my. Chevrolet dealer for repair. The repair took about two months mostly due to obtaining shifting parts. I can now drive the car but the parts to replace the shifting mechanism is still on back order. It is now early October. The “shift into park” as I think the problem has been named, is still an intermittent problem for me. Sometimes the car shuts down promptly as it should. Sometimes however, I go though the process of shutting down a few times before I am confident that the car has really turned off. I would like to know if this defect has caused other accidents. If so, it my mitigate my responsibility for my my accident which has caused me grief and a large increase in my insurance premium. Another reason I am writing is because there has been a report of a fatal accident in vienna township, near flint, michigan involving a women being pinned under her car after exiting to check her mail box. The article in “m-live” paper by joey oliver joliver@mlive. Com the supposition was that she thought her car was in park. I am hoping that the investigators of her accident would consider the possibility of the car being defective. . Read more...

45 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/08/2023

The egr valve on the vehicle went bad, causing the vehicle to display 'propulsion reduce' and 'engine not available' errors on the dashboard before the vehicle came to a stop while driving on an interstate. Searching this issue for the Chevrolet Volt online yields a significant amount of similar issues experienced by other Volt owners. Vehicle was inspected and repaired by a Chevrolet dealership, but seems to be a recurring issue with very limited parts supplied by gm, leading to potential of very long delays in repair time.

46 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 02/06/2023

The evaporative emissions pipe has a hole in it. This same issue has been previously associated with a recall. The dealer (andy mohr Chevrolet - plainfield) reported that it was fixed in 2020 and declined to do service without me paying for it.

47 Equipment problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 01/28/2023

2019 chevy Volt gave a shift to park message when vehicle was already in park. Could not turn off vehicle. Had to restart Volt, then take out of park, but back in park and message disappeared and was able to safely leave vehicle. This happened approximately 6 times in one outing. Also somehow the electric parking brake light came on the dash console but I had not applied the parking brake yet!! no symptoms, warning lamps, or messages before this happened. Have not made appointment yet to take to dealer to get repaired - hopefully under warranty.

48 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 01/16/2023

Becm failure. Initially, it caused the vehicle to operate in a low propulsion state. However, it now prevents the vehicle from starting. Likewise, I have heard it has stopped the engines from working/shut down the engines while people are driving on the highway.

49 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/29/2022

The car stalled at a high rate of speed on a freeway because of egr failure. Engine check light is on, along with a warning about a critical problem with emissions system that requires immediate attention. The part is out of stock in all dealership within a reasonable reach. The problem is under warranty, but I have made multiple attempts to fix this issue with no success.

50 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/20/2022

The two original equipment hydraulic struts that support either side of the rear trunk lid failed. It is available for inspection. The safety of my husband and I is/was put at risk because when you open the trunk, the lid is not staying up like it did, causing it to crash down on your head, back of neck, shoulder, arm, hand, etc. , causing injury that is potentially fatal. The faulty parts are still in place and not inspected yet by a dealer, service center, police or insurance company. No warnings given for this faulty equipment, hence the danger of its unexpected suddenness. It started about 2 weeks ago. I spoke with general motors, the florida dmv and the Chevrolet dealership where the car was purchased and is taken for repairs.

51 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/11/2022

On Sunday night, I was driving around 65 mph on the 405 freeway to take my friend to the airport. I noticed that the car started to give a weird feedback sensation on the pedals and had started to jerk us forward. As I merged onto the two-lane on ramp to the 10 freeway, the car started to rapidly lose power and then completely died and went dark. I was unable to use the hazard lights as the car had just gone dark but then it turned back on but would not let me shift it into drive. As I was on a two-lane on-ramp with no shoulder in the dark, we just had to pray that no one would hit us. In doing research, I suspect that this was yet another becm failure that has been repeatedly happening with this year of Chevrolet Volts. There was most recently a class-action lawsuit filed for this very issue. The car is currently at the dealership awaiting inspection but I am terrified to drive that car again if it even becomes drivable. Especially since there were no warning lights or signs on the vehicle to indicate that this could be an issue and to have it die on the freeway in the way that it did, putting my life and many other lives at risk, I am shocked that there hasn't been a recall for this issue.

52 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/22/2022

Egr valve failed, and car stopped driving on the highway.

53 Equipment problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/22/2022

Car suddenly lost ability to accelerate normally while driving. It could only accelerate extremely slowly, seemingly with great effort. It displayed “propulsion power reduced service engine soon” and engine not available” messages on the dashboard, and a check engine light came on. It sounds like it may be related to current gm recall 18215/ NHTSA campaign number: 18v397000, but nothing comes up when I search for this VIN.

54 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/02/2022

Our 2017 Volt started experiencing a "shift to park" error message on November 2, 2022 when the vehicle is stopped and the transmission shifter has been placed in "park". Apparently the microswitch responsible for detecting "park" (gm part # 84955382) has failed and this appears to be a common defect in several models of Chevrolet. With this error message the vehicle will not turn off and the car cannot be secured properly (both of which are a safety concern). Our vehicle has less than 30k miles on it so it should not be a case of normal wear and tear causing the problem. Gm has not issued a recall for this defect yet but we see there are several class action law suits looking to force them to do so. We also note that a number of consumers have reported the error progressing so that it occurs while the vehicle is in operation causing the driver to have to pull to the side of the road when transmission operation ceases. Chevrolet released document id 5403533 on December 11, 2020, bulletin #19-na-206 due to the frequency of this defect detailing the parts needed to effect repairs for several models of Chevrolet. We have discussed this issue with our local Chevrolet dealer and they concur the vehicle should be repaired ASAP to avoid the progression of switch failure in the vehicle. Since the car is out of warranty and in the absence of a manufacturer's recall that will cost approximately $310. We will have this repair done tomorrow (November 15) and will ask the dealer to provide us the defective switch in case you care to inspect it.

55 Equipment problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/26/2022

Driver’s display completely dark. I can’t see speed, gas remaining, charge remaining, turn signals, gear, warnings if tire pressure is low, etc. Upon turning the car off and back on, the display lights back for an couple of minutes until it goes dark again. There was no warning before it happened for the first time a couple of days ago. The car is extremely unsafe and not drivable as I have no idea how fast I’m going, if I’m about to run out of gas, etc. Luckily, the screen went dark when my 16-year-old daughter was driving in our neighborhood. This should definitely be a recall issue.

56 Equipment problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/23/2022

When placing in park it doesn't trigger the switch and car will not shut down.

Failure Date: 09/06/2022

Shift to park not working. Dashboard says action needed and vehicle will not shut off.

58 Equipment problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/31/2022

Started in late summer/fall of 2022 getting 'shift to park' error. The vehicle is in park and unable to turn off the vehicle when I get this error. I have noticed the error is more prone to come on when the parking break is also engaged or if it's on any sort of hill but I cannot pinpoint the cause of the annoying error. Sometimes I could spend 5 minutes or more getting the error to clear--usually am able to clear by doing a combination of moving/turning on/off the parking break, the shift and/or turning on/off the car and/or opening the door.

59 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/03/2022

At approximately 61,500 miles my chevy Volt would not start. I had it towed to a repair facility who determined the problem was a faulty becm (battery energy control module), but that it would still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty. So I had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The vehicle has been at the dealership for six weeks as of the time I write this, but report they have yet to diagnose the problem or offer a solution. Doing research online I have found that becm failure is a common problem among the chevy Volt, of all model years. And due to "supply chain disruptions" people are having to wait weeks to months for their vehicle to be repaired. Fortunately my vehicle did not fail in a dangerous location, however the becm failure could happen randomly at any time at any mileage and appears to be a design flaw. Fortunately my vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but in my opinion, repair should be extended to all chevy Volts.

60 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/24/2022

A lot of times when I turned off the car "shift to park" message comes on. First time I've noticed this was about few months back. Then, it happened maybe 2-3 times, but now it has been happening constantly. Almost every time I turned off the car.

61 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/24/2022

This chevy Volt experiences transmission's shift-to-park error. This error prevents car from turning off due to not recognizing the shift gear is in the park position. After placing the shift into park and turning the power button off, the car turns back on again and flashes the shift-to-park error message. This apparently is a malfunction of gear shift which has been widely reported on gm-volt community board on 2nd generation Volts.

62 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/12/2022

When I put my car in park , it tells me to shift to park and will not turn off.

63 Equipment problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/09/2022

Car shifter saying not in park when it is causing issues with turning off car. Has been happening for a while.

64 Equipment problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/02/2022

The shift to park error populates every time I park incorrectly informing me to shift to park before turning off vehicle and thus preventing me from turning off the vehicle. I have to restart the car, put in drive and put back in park forcefully and it may recognize the shift from drive to park.

65 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/01/2022

Control module battery energy control failure part is unavailable for more then 3 months or more check engine light on car can be disabled at any time traveling down highway dealer confirmed part needs to be replaced.

My shift control button gets stuck when I put the car into park. Shift control assembly needs to be replaced and installed harness as per doc#5403533.

67 Equipment problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

About half the time, when I put the vehicle into park, a warning comes up telling me that the vehicle is not in park. I can make the problem go away by wiggling the shift lever. But it is a recurring problem, and it is getting worse.

68 Equipment problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/19/2022

Shift to park error.

69 Equipment problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/09/2022

Was approaching an intersection with a stoplight that was red. Another car stopped at light. Applied brakes, but car slowed down only slightly, no matter how hard the brake pedal was applied. It was like braking on black ice, even though the cars wheels were still going around. Rear ended the car at the light. Suspect that computer was telling the car to try to charge the battery using the forward motion of the car instead of stopping the car. All air bags deployed. Injuries were limited to bruises, abrasions, and general body soreness. Vehicle currently in possession of allstate ins. Have requested that brake system be inspected, and computer info be downloaded. Car was totaled. No injuries in other vehicle. No previous problems, no warning lamps or messages prior to accident. Car had been well maintained, including all recalls, and received routine maintenance (oil change, tire rotation) about three months before the incident. Problem has not been reproduced, nor is it likely to be since the vehicle is undrivable.

70 Equipment problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/05/2022

I put it in park, and try to turn off the car, but it says "shift to park", and won't let me turn off the car.
