Chrysler LHS owners have reported 25 problems related to steering tie rod assembly (under the steering category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Drivers side front wheel lost control while turning left. Car had to be towed. Diagnosing failure today. Believe either tie rod or steering box. If your steering wheel has any play would highly recommend not driving until having it looked at by mechanic. Lives could easily be lost at highway speeds.

For some time now when I would start my car ,I would hear a banging sound and feel the steering wheel move. I took the car for service and tie rod ends and I think center link were replaced . It was fine for a while and than I started to get a grinding noise when the wheel was turned. Took it in for service and nothing could be found. On Feb. 16th 2012 I was leaving work and noticed the grinding and banging had increased. My route home consists mostly of right turns. It is when I attempted to make a left turn off a busy bridge ,to my horror the wheel would not turn left, it took every ounce of my strength to finally get the wheel to turn. I drove slowly the remainder of my trip home, each time a left turn came I had to use all my strength to turn the wheel. I could not park the car properly on my arrival as my strength was gone and I was extremely emotional. I talked to a CO-worker with the same vehicle and he is having a similar problem but continues to drive as he can muscle the wheel.

I just purchased the cursed 97 Chrysler Lhs . Driving it home I noticed sloppy steering conditions. And I hit a pothole and my car jerked over to the next lane and almost hit an oncoming vehicle. When I got home I went straight to the tie rods and of course they were loose at the inner tie rod. So im stuck with an unsafe car that I cant drive. Thanks alot you billionaire freaks.

Rack and pinion and outer tie rod failure on my 1999 Chrysler Lhs. I purchased the car approx 30 months ago and it only had 3000 miles or 5400 kilometers. The steering failed on August 10 2008. I was pulling out of the driveway and the steering froze and I could not with all of my strength turn the wheels to the left. . . . . When it failed, the car only had 34,544 kilometers and now has 35000. I have had it repaired at a local garage at the approx. Cost of 1400. 00 dollars. Seems to me that the car has very low mileage and I have been doing alot of reading about this and this should definitely qualify as a recall item. What I really think is that Chrysler should make every attempt to repair and repay all of the consumers that have already had their vehicle repaired. Also I would like them to make some serious changes to the steering system which in my eyes is a very dangerous system and is prone to failure that can cause serious injury. Now that it has been repaired, I still find some clunking noises and the steering is very stiff when you first begin driving. . . I also had to replace the outer tie rods because they were very noisy and unsafe and that was done approx 30 days before the steering rack was replaced. . . . If I can assist you in any way, please contact me and I would be happy to do so. Thank you.

1996 Chrysler Lhs, loose steering. Discovered steering at risk of total failure, tie rod/rack & pinion bushing completely disintegrated. If not discovered in time, could have caused complete failure of steering due to bolt shearing, perhaps causing fatal or at the very least, extremely injurious accident. .
Steering veered to the right. Steering was very shaky. Took car into mechanic and I need new tie rod on passenger side and bushing is completely gone. I was told I should no longer drive the car because rod may be cracked and I could lose all steering control ($850). Had similar problems on driver side two years ago and mechanic fixed ($1,000). Also a few years ago, my fiance lost complete control of car while driving. Computer shut down while driving. Dealership replaced computer chip (800k mile warranty) but now lights flicker in car. Please please inform customers of these problems before someone gets hurt.
Still in need of repair, needs rack & pinion bushings, right outer tie rod end, already had inner tie rod replaced.
: the contact stated while traveling 50 mph, a very loud noise was heard when the vehicle hit a bump in the road, vibrated, and shifted to the right. The dealership determined the right inner tie rod, rack and pinion, bushings and sway bar were bad. The rear bushings, sway bar, strut and strut mount were also bad.
Car has 40k miles, 1999 model, no crashes. Driving down residential street, slow down and make right turn into parking lot. At completion of turn attempted to straighten wheels and lost function from steering but steering wheel turned like normal. Luckily very low speed so was able to stop without crash. Root cause is bolts (2) sheared below steering gear where tie rods connect. Repairs in progress, will attempt to drill out sheared bolts and replace, before having to replace gearbox and bolts.
I own a 1999 Chrysler Lhs and have had to replace / repair both tie rod bushing on each side of my car. (both driver and passenger sides) you hear a clunking noise and the steering feels unsafe/slack. When the car is lifted on a jack, you can push on the tire and it goes in a back and forth motion.
I purchased my vehicle as a pre-certified car with only 14,100 original miles in June of 2003. On 4/4/2004 my vehicle speedometer sensor failed causing my vehicle to be place in a safety mode of no more than 25 miles an hour. . (felt like the transmission dropped). Then a year later around the same time, my power steering pump failed and almost causing me an accident. I have also repaired the cradle bushing 3 times since owning this vehicle and now I have to replace them again. I also just recently (Dec. Of 2011) had all the struts complete assembly replaced with both lower control arms with ball joints. Replaced both upper outer tie rods, both lateral links. I am constantly replacing my tires before there warranty time and replacing front-end brake pads. Also my seat belts are defective and not working properly. The rear defroster/antenna module started smoking and melted causing my defroster not to work anymore. I have been having nothing but problem with this vehicle since day one, with no help or concern from Chrysler. The bumper to bumper warranty I had purchased for the vehicle did not cover any of these failed parts. I also tried getting the recall parts replaced and was told by several dealerships that my car was not part of the recall because I have a sunroof Lhs. I am constantly having to replace front-end suspension parts that keep failing on this vehicle. This vehicle only had 1 owner before me. I have receipts for all updated maintenance and repairs for this vehicle. Chrysler has denied me of any failed parts, warranty parts and recalls for the vehicle. This is just the beginning of the issues with this vehicle, there are other issues as well but will not be able to fit it on this form.
Tie rods broke on both sides.
(1) events: normal driving. (2) loss of steering control on 1997 Chrysler Lhs. Due to luck there was no accident or injury, although failure at a different time would easily have resulted in severe injury or death. Failure is not yet fully analyzed, but appears to be due to failure of either inner tie rod bushing or inner tie rod mounting bolt. Steering control of left side front wheel was completely lost. I will provide update when exact nature of failure is available. For legal reasons I am proceeding carefully in analyzing this failure. Complete documentation will be available after analysis is complete.
The upper ball joints and the tie rods malfunctioned.
The tie rod ends wore out prematurely. Consumer stated he was going on the fourth set of tie rods at 125,000 miles.
Inner tie rod ends only last realistically about 10,000 miles, become completely unserviceable in 20,000. I am sure Chrysler is aware of this poor design/material problem. Additionally, the steering box also has problems with the mounting bushings. Be advised that I have replaced the inner tie rods twice, then the bushings when they became available in after market form. Chrysler, after my many complaints, replaced the tie rod ends(once again) and the steering box due to movement of the box due to bushing wear. Once again, the tie rod bushings need to be replaced. This car now has almost 80,000 miles. Isn't this ridiculous. Having at one time been a front end mechanic I know how dangerous this problem is. The car is a 1996 Chrysler Lhs. I expect some relief from this.
While driving at a low speed in a parking garage the steering failed and the vehicle could not be turned in either direction. The dealer determined that two half-inch bolts for the inner tie rod broke in the steering rack. The dealer replaced the steering rack and inner tie rod bushing. The consumer has the parts in his possession.
Vehicle experienced steering wheel failure. (nar) while driving both tie rod bolts broke. This caused the vehicle to continue on a straight path although the consumer was turning the wheel. The consumer feels that since the manufacturer knew about the faulty component that they should reimburse her for the amount of the repair.
While attempting to back into driveway, consumer lost control of the steering, the front wheels were completely independent of the steering wheel, and the front wheels were independent of each other, vehicle was towed and consumer was informed that the steering gear and and tie rod end needed to be replaced.
While driving drivers side tie rod end rattling due to tie rod wearing out. Consumer feels that the rod may fall off, and there will be no steering.
My car was repaired at olson tire - store # 06-17 in port st lucie florida on may 11, 1999. My invoice says they replace a rack and pinion unit and a tie rod end at a cost of $1521. 86 including labor and applicable taxes. On Friday, oct 8, 1999, I was backing out of parking space when I heard a "clunk" I looked around saw that I did not hit anything and tried to pull forawrd. The car just rocked in place. I got out and saw that my d. Side tire was turned and the p. Side tire was straight. Bottom line was that the bolt that holds the rack in was sheered off (broke). According to what I have been told , these bolts just don't break. My warranty company will not pay for the repair beacuse a bolt is hardware??? and olson wanted to chrage me $300++++ to fix the problem. I am very concerned about this"bolt". Had I been driving when this occurred , there could have benn some very serious consequences. Where do I go from here??.
When driving at high speeds tires would wobble and vibrate due to the bushing on the inner tie rod going bad. Dealer said the rack and pinion also needs to be replaced.
Vehicle experienced two difference incidents: first, while traveling on freeway at 70 mph tie rod end broke, causing loss of steering (no collision or injuries). Second incident occurred while traveling on the freeway at 60 mph, rack and pinion came locked due to valve failure and caused steering wheel to lock, almost causing a vehicle collision (again no damages to other vehicle or injuries received). On both occasions, repairs was done at consumer's cost.
Tire rod end broken. Dealer wants 410. 00 to repair part.
The problem started last year with a cold sqwak noise when steering the car. I had that fixed but the problem started again 9 months later and developed into a major problem. I had the car towed to the dealer because the steering seemed loose and I was having trouble controling it. They replaced the inner ti rods and sent me on my way. I returned the car a few days later after being told by another garage that the steering was still loose under the car. They then told me I needed a new rack and pinion steering replacement. I hesitated and took the car to another Chrysler dealer for repairs. They told me the car needed outer ti rod replacement along with a wheel alingment and also that the inner ti rods were not installed properly. They also told me that this problem should have been diagnosed at the original dealership. This could have been a disaster if left to go unrepaired. After some research I found that this is not the only time there has been problems with the steering on these cars. I feel there has been some negligence on the part of the 1st dealer and also Chrysler. I notified them after this started and they told me I was on my own. I had the car fixed but I think that this might be a design problem that should be addressed.
