3 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 01/10/2016

In Dec. 2013, at 71k miles, in the car used by my college-age daughter, when starting the car on a cold morning (20's) I noted rock-hard brake pedal and no power assist whatsoever while backing down our driveway. By the street, it had a normal pedal feel and assist. This repeatedly happened in cold-morning starts. The dealer, klaben Chrysler Jeep Dodge of kent, ohio, was helpful and eventually replaced the brake booster a few weeks later, for free. A year later my daughter mentioned the car was doing this again (cold weather had returned). I took the car back to klaben and said I was compelled to contact NHTSA as if I or my daughter hit a person because of no brake assist whatsoever, it would be tragic. In March of 2015, klaben again replaced the booster and pcv filter, free, informing me that there was oil in the booster. While this service was appreciated, when my daughter was home from college recently (Jan. 2016), I started her car and the brake pedal was rock-hard when pushing it to take the car out of park. It immediately had power assist after that, but this tells me the problem is returning. There was a safety recall last year (after our car's last booster replacement) on 2013-14 Dodge dart models for the same problem and the repair was identical--replace booster if oil is found in there. I believe other Chrysler models besides the dart are experiencing this issue, as our car has. The recall should be expanded and hopefully a permanent fix found. I believe our car's cold-weather braking will continue to deteriorate and I don't want this problem to rear its ugly head in the next winter.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2008 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 02/06/2015

I was coming home from work and driving down the street when the lights on the dashboard went out, the gas gauge went to zero and the car just died. I lost power steering and braking and I was lucky there was no one behind me at the time. The key was locked in the steering wheel and I could not restart. I called 911 for help as cars were now zooming up behind me stalled in the lane. I was so scared that someone would hit me. I sat waiting for the tow truck for about 15 minutes when the lights suddenly came on again and the gas gauge went back to full. I tried to start it and it started right up. I was able to drive it 2 blocks home. The next day I drove to the cleaners and while trying to park it died in the parking lot. I again waited and it finally started again. I took it to the Chrysler dealership and they say they can find nothing wrong. They suggested I junk it for about $100. I have also taken to an independent mechanic and he said he could not find a problem. I see there are others who have reported a similar problem. And now there is a Chrysler recall on other 2008 models with what seems like the same problem. I cannot drive this car because it is unsafe in traffic.

8 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 08/17/2014

I recently purchased this vehicle about 3 months back. I was driving from vegas back home to los angeles on the I-15 freeway. I was on the far left side of the freeway and just touched the brake pedal. It was rock hard. It just wouldn't press down. I somehow managed to not get into a collision at that speed and moved over to the right shoulder, waited for the car to slow down and then started pulling the emergency brakes slowly. The car slowed down and since the brakes wouldn;t get pressed I had to turn off the engine on the drive mode. I called 911. The state trooper that came checked the car, sat on the driver seata nd drove the car a bit. He looked at me and said "I don't know how you survived this. There are no brakes in the car". He checked the coolant, brake fluid, oil and everything was good. I called aaa who towed my car back to vegas to fix it. That cost me $424. The repair guy who fixed the car said he has never seen something like this. The manifold from where the pipes are connected to the brakes has a metal elbow that connects the pipes to the manifold. That metal elbow fell off and he tried setting it back on but it just wiuldn't stay. This is a factory defect since the metal elbows comes with the manifold and that is made at the Chrysler factory. I took it to the dealer and he said the same thing. I called Chrysler and they wouldn't help me since there was no collision and the part is not under warranty. I checked online and this has happened to others as well. There have been no recalls!.

9 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 05/09/2014

Driving vehicle, all dashboard lights blink on and off, cars stalls, brakes and steering lock up. This has happened at least 15 times over the last few months, and is very dangerous. Also, sometimes the engine fan won't shut off when car is turned off, and it drains the car battery. This has happened at least 10 times. That part is getting expensive and very irritating, but the stalling out and completely dying, is very dangerous, because you can't always get off the road.

10 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

The vehicle failed to stop after applying brakes.

11 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 02/11/2014

I have a concern about all the issues with this car. On March 29th my fog lights would not turn off even when ignition switch was turned off. I went on line and saw several "blogs" about this issue - I am an older women with minimal knowledge of these things so I went to a parts store that was open and the clerk pulled the #8 fuse out - for the fog lights so my battery would not run down before service/repair was open on Monday- the mechanic stated he could fix it and also that the dealership just took in a used cruiser and the fog lights did not work - they found that someone had took the fuses out for that cruiser also - is this a defective issue- appears now according to the internet the replacement part has been improved. I also had to replace the entire computer and again seems other cruiser owners have had this issue also - this is a lot of expense and with the loan on the car is difficult to now get a different car as this does seem to be a lemon - but I have to keep it till I can afford to get a different car - with all these issues - no one will want this one either.

16 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

The first time in September 2013 the vehicle was running fine. I had gone into a store and when I came out it would not start. The lights on the panel were on but some were flashing on and off. I had it towed to my mechanics shop and they determined it was the battery and replaced it. Every once in a while lights on the panel will flash on and off but not for long. Last night 7/30/2014 I was driving, everything was fine and then all of a sudden all the panel lights were on and the vehicle just died. It was a good thing that I was in a shopping center and not on the road because at first the brakes wouldn't work. This is not safe. I can't afford to get another vehicle right now. We had to push it to safety and then I noticed there was some kind of code or something (no bus/5) at the bottom of the rpm section of the panel. Couldn't find anything in the manual about it, called an auto parts store and it didn't show up in their database, so I had a friend google it. Everything points to the electrical/computer system and fuses. Several people posted this issue with jeeps and Pt Cruisers.

17 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 04/26/2012

I was driving the car and the car started pulling and making a scraping noise, I took the car into Chrysler and they did an oil change and said I'd need brakes and had worn shocks> I told them I thought that was unusual for a car with only 19k on it. I told them I wanted a second opinion, I took the car that day to midas, they confirmed the right break was shot and was the rotor but the rest were fine, and the shock was not worn but leaking. I called Chrysler and told them they were mistaken and if they were doing there job they would have notice that a month earlier when the car was in there for tire rotation. The brakes were r fixed for 354. 00 and Chrysler wanted me to send the receipt when they quickly denied. The car has a lifetime warranty on it, and I understand the 1yr etc on brakes. . But if I drove the car normally it would have shown up,,and this was not wear (I kept the used parts) and the shocks not worn. I bought the car brand new and wondering if it was damaged on the lot or something. . .

20 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

My car just shuts off leaving me no control to stop, turn, or get out of the way of traffic behind me. . . . . @ 55mph to nothing is asking to be hit from behind. Or if turning accross a divided highway, to be left stuck with 2 lanes of semi comming for me and my kids. Now it sometimes wont even do anything when I crank over the ignition (like there is no battery) or if it cranks and starts it will shut off right away. It wants to idle down at stops and stall. I have had it in the shop more than I like n spent more money to have to be told they can't find anything. I read of so many other owners with the same problems who end up junking these cuz they just stop starting. . . . Sad, we need our cars to run. Chrysler knows they r riddled with serious issues including the lights and transmitions. . . . . These are a bad combination on the road. Someone needs to look @ some stats! thanks.

22 Service Brakes problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

Web site topix will confirm the incredible # of folks that have had fog lamps turn on after car is shut down causing battery drain. 100's have paid for replacement part multi-function switch. This controls fog, head, accessory, & dash lighting. To prevent the fog lamps from coming on by themselves, most have removed fuse # 8 to remove the fog lamps from the circuit. People report smoke coming from turn signal lever, & the complete loss of all lighting is quite common. I personally have replaced the multi-function switch 3 times on my wife's 2001 p. T. Cruiser with only 50,000 total miles & she being original owner. By parking her car minus fuse # 8, not using dome lighting, & always parking with the signal lever in the down or left turn position has prevented the mystery fog lamp issue, & kept her battery functioning. This "temp" solution has allowed her about 6 or 8 months of driving w/o the problems other pt owners struggle with. Sooner or later someone will lose lighting or a fire will occur inside the steering wheel which will cause serious injury, loss of vehicle & possibly death. Chrysler denies any knowledge, but wants more than $1,000. 000 to analyze & repair. Through the topix p. T forum I was able to learn how to do the work myself for far less than $100. Many are getting ripped off for hundreds while Chrysler knows full well of the issue. No less than an investigation, perhaps started with the topix forum will demonstrate the incredible number of failures that still plague the p. T. On later models such as 2001 thru 06 or 08. Also need 3rd. Brake job, & the rims do not seal causing low tires that hurt mpg. Driving comfort, & safety. Dealer & I have tried michelin tires hoping the problem was with the factory installed goodyears. I still hear every 100 miles or so that my wife's p. T needs additional air pressure. ## VIN passed ## 2001 Chrysler p. T cruiser ##.

I have taken it in to the shop numbers of times and every time I'm told that there is no problem with the breaks and that "some" noise is normal.
