37 Wheel problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

I have a 2005 pt crusier turbo and I recently had one of my tires go flat with no puncture or damage to the tire. I replaced the tire and in two weeks the new tire went flat, again no apparent damage. I took it back to the tire store, they said that the tire was fine, however the inside of the rim was peeling off and the seal that is formed could not hold due this peeling of the coating on the rim. I asked for a new tire, they agreed and it held for about three weeks, however when the weather got extremely cold, the tire went flat over night again with no damage. The rims are defective according to the tire dealer.

38 Wheel problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 11/06/2008

The tire on my 2005 Pt Cruiser was flat and when I went to get it fixed was told that the tire was fine but the finish was coming off the rim and this caused the tire to go flat. I went to a national automotive repair chain to get it fixed. I was told that they could put a type of sealant around the tire so it would not go flat. They could not guarantee it would not go flat as they stated this was a common problem for Pt Cruisers. I have talked to other Pt Cruiser owners and looked on the internet in regards to this and found that indeed, this is a very common problem with this particular car model. I feel that this is a defect and that the company should replace the rims before a tire or tires go flat while driving the car. I was fortunate as the car was parked. But to be stuck in winter with the possibility of having multiple flats while driving is a very risky venture for me as well as the public. I would appreciate having this matter looked into and what my future options are in regard to my Pt Cruiser.

41 Wheel problem of the 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 08/05/2008

2 of the alloy rims leak air at an increasing rate. 2 years ago it was fill more air once a month, last year every 2 weeks or less and last 2 months every 2 days. The other day I lost a tire from low air after driving 50 miles over a 7 hour time frame. I lose about 20 lbs overnight on these 2 tires because the corrosion of the base metal and the chrome is happening at an unbelievable rate. The tire dealers have scraped off the old corrosion but to no avail as it quickly recurs. I am lucky it was only a flat the other day and not a loss of steering in busy traffic.

42 Wheel problem of the 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/18/2008

After replacing the original tires on the auto we had a series of problems with keeping the tires inflated. We were told that the chrome on the rims was oxidizing and it was a problem with all Chrysler corp. Chrome rims. We had five (5) flat tires with in a two week period and decided to talk to the Chrysler dealer regarding the problem. We were told that they could do nothing about this safety problem because the auto was out of warranty. We then contacted Chrysler customer service phone number and were told they would not stand behind there product because it was out of warranty. We then sent a letter to Chrysler corp. And have not had any response. Again we were told that there are many Chrysler vehicles on the road with rims that will cause a flat tire at any time and no one at Chrysler seems to want to correct this safety issue.

43 Wheel problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 07/02/2008

The rims/wheels have been corroding severely over the last 1. 5 years, causing multiple flat tires on my car. This has proven to be extremely dangerous. I've been to various mechanics who have stated that several of the Pt Cruisers he's worked on, have had this same flaw. If there isn't a resolution, I will not purchase another Chrysler product. Thank you for your time. I hope for a just resolution in this matter. Donna kloss.

44 Wheel problem of the 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 04/02/2008

I own a 2005 Pt Cruiser turbo. Have had continuing problems with the air leaking out of the tires. Finally, was told the rims had a coating problem that eroded so they don't seal properly. Had to buy 4 new rims. Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me since the tire company said this was common on the Pt Cruiser.

45 Wheel problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 10/16/2007

I own a 2001 Pt Cruiser. I purchased the vehicle new. I have a concern that may lead to a catastrophic failure of the original equipment chrome plated aluminum wheels supplied with this vehicle. I have been noticing abnormal deterioration of the aluminum wheels on this vehicle. There appears to be some type of galvanic reaction between the aluminum wheel and the steel of the wheel hubs. This deterioration appears to be due to a bad fit between the aluminum wheel and the bearing hub. This deterioration has progressed to the point where the wheel bolt (lugs) pattern is affected. The manufacturer was no help when this issue was raised with them. My fear is that, if left uncorrected, the wheel could fail catastrophically at high speeds. This may be typical of several year for this vehicle type.

46 Wheel problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/06/2007

(1) loss of tire air pressure noticed on two different wheels, three weeks apart. (2) pressure loss due to corrosion on chrome-plated alloy wheels on 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. (3) temporary correction was to grind corrosion and seal the bead with truck wheel sealer. Upon conversation with a Chrysler dealership, I was told that ultimately the wheels will need to be replaced, as this is a common occurrence. I was further told that, in fact, they have experienced total wheel failure due to corrosion (holes all the way through the wheel). Upon further research, I found that this has also been the case with Chrysler 300s and Dodge durangos.

47 Wheel problem of the 2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 03/05/2007

We own a 2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser gt which we bought new. The problem started approximately at 33,000 miles and is still ongoing. We took the car to our tire dealer to find out what was causing the leakage and they discovered that it was caused by the flaking off of the chrome alloy on the wheels. The dealer replaced the one wheel that was defective which was just after the warranty expired, and now at 43,000 miles we have at least two more doing the same thing. We contacted the dealer again and after about two months they finally said they would not replace the other wheels after talking with the Chrysler representative. This is a very unsafe situation as a tire will heat up when it slowly loses air and could fail at high speed and possibly cause a life threatening situation. I have learned this by experience as a truck driver when I had a slow leak in a wheel on the steering axle and it exploded on my truck at least four different times until we finally found the tiny leak in the chrome wheel. The dealer's service department would not give me the number or name of who he talked to as he said it was company policy not to give these out. He also did not know who the manufacturer of the wheel was and he would have to find out from the parts dept. This of course upset me and I raised my voice to him and he said that if I kept yelling at him he would refuse to help me at all. This was done all by phone on 8-11 08.

2002 limited edition Pt Cruiser - wheels defective. The aluminum alloy wheels have completely deteriorated (peeling and flaking) underneath the chrome plating (inside and out), causing the wheels to continually leak air and weaken the structural integrity of the wheel, making the vehicles unsafe. I have a 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser with chrome plated wheels. I had a flat tire and brought the vehicle to a tire store for repair. They said there was nothing wrong with the tire but the wheels were corroded to the point that the air leaked out around the valve stem. I took the vehicle to the local Chrysler dealer and they ordered new wheels and said they would be replaced under warranty. When the wheels came in they called me and I setup an appointment to have them installed. I took the car there and they said they would call me when it was done. They called three hours later and said they could not replace the wheels under warranty because Chrysler recently changed their policy. They said the corrosion was due to enviornmental reasons due to the area I live. Southwestern new york. The car has only been through one winter and part of another. These wheels were standard equipment on the model I purchased. I feel this is a tremendous safety hazzard as you can not tell the air has leaked out unless you look at the tire. It has been down to five lbs. Of air and you can't tell while driving down the road. I would think the tire could come off the wheel and cause loss of control and serious injury.

70 Wheel problem of the 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser

Failure Date: 05/01/2001

After 1 1/2 years of front end pulling, unevenness and steering wheel wobble, dealer concluded faulty tires. Goodyear then concluded cause to be out-of-round oem Chrysler 16" chrome wheels. Goodyear did not replace the tires free of charge, I had to pay for the pro-ration. As of this writing, am awaiting to speak with Chrysler service zone rep about the problem. I have requested Chrysler reimburse for the two front tires, pay for rear tire replacements, and replace all four chrome wheels with new ones. Goodyear store manager confirmed many Pt Cruisers have been in his shop, misdiagnosed by dealer to be faulty tires, only to discover the oem Chrysler chrome wheels are out-of-round. Also told me 1) either the oem wheels are defective in manufacture, or 2) the design of the Pt Cruiser is causing only the chrome wheels to become out-of-round upon normal driving/usage. My goodyear tires were/are 3/4 tread worn at just 22,500 miles. Normal tread life for these tires is between 45,000-50,000 miles. Dt.
