18 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2002 Chrysler Sebring. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I take good care of my car it's my only transportation to take my new born back and forth to our appointments I bring my car in every 4 moths to make sure my car is still safe for my child. My engine knocks it's really loud 3 different people told me 3 different things so I brought it into a Chrysler shop and they told me that I should just buy a new car that this happens to a lot of the 2002 Chrysler Sebrings. So I asked them what's wrong and they told me I would need a new engine.
In April 2011, we purchased a 2002 Chrysler Sebring convertible limited edition (with 2. 7 engine) from a privite owner. In January 2013 it was towed to napleton Chrysler dealership in kissimmee. They still have our vehicle. We had purchased an extended warranty from gold key for $2695. 00 which is still in effect, but they will not cover the engine due to the sludge build up. This car was only used for leisure and we put less than 3,000 miles since we have owned it. Also, we had the oil changed using synthetic. My husband is on disability and we can not afford to pay for an engine replacement. Unfortunately, I think we will have to junk the car.
I was driving on freeway and engine gave out and I got stuck on shoulder, had to call a tow truck and my mechanic said my engine seized. I have my care serviced regularly and did not know of this engine/oil sludge problem. I cannot afford a new engine or to buy a new car.
Due to an oil sludge issue, my engine cut out on me and now I am having to replace the timing chain and possibly the motor. I haven't gotten the full report back yet.
Engine died due to oil sludge problem, however, we kept the car in good condition and performed maintenance regularly.
Bearing blew no warning have had regular oil changes.
I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring converible, with 56k miles, with a blown engine, rod thru it due to oil sludge. Oil was changed on the car every 4 months.
This complaint follows others that own the Sebring conv. And the sludge buildup,. I also do reg. Maint. On the vehicle and now have an engine that has siezed & failed in the middle of the highway almost causing a pileup. I have researched this vehicle and have found numerous complaints on this problem, not only on this site but several others, I also understand that a class action suit is being brought againt Chrysler on the 2. 7ltr engine for this fact. The oil light kept flickering took it in to have it checked out and could not find anything wrong, levels correct, it would go out for awhile and then boom. This would go on like every 3 months or so since I haved owned this car . Never again Chrysler. Will it take a death for you to order a recall on these engines???.
The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler Sebring. While driving 60 mph, the vehicle failed. The driver was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road, but it would not restart. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and inspected by a technician, who stated that the motor failed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection and they determined that a tear down had to be done to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was inspected and it was determined that there was engine sludge. The cost for the repair would be $7,800. The manufacturer advised her to have the vehicle towed to the dealer for further inspection. The vehicle was inspected and it was determined that because there was engine sludge, no compensation would be provided. The vehicle has not been repaired. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 86,000.
I purchased a 2002 Sebring convertible limited edition one year ago. I maintained the car, changed the oil regularly, and put 20,000 miles on the car before it threw a rod. I had changed the oil 2 days prior to this event. The car has under 100,000 miles total. The dealership quoted me $8000 to repair the engine. They will only give me $1000 on a trade, leaving me in too much negative equity (-$6400) to afford another vehicle. They are unyielding in every aspect and refuse to help me get into another vehicle or to repair what is clearly a common problem with these engines. It didn't take much research to learn these engines are junk. Now I am renting a vehicle and still do not know what I am going to do. They are forcing me into a repo situation, which will absolutely ruin my credit. Not to mention, I cannot get into another car with that one still in financing. Since I had the oil changed at another shop, they blamed the shop and said they did something wrong. Funny, the same shop and same guy has been changing my oil for 20 years and I've never had any problems before. I was almost hit when the incident occurred as I could not safely get off the freeway. This has been a nightmare! and still, I have no vehicle.
Was driving along us 27 south in indiana when the car made a terriable noise and stopped running. . . . Motor locked up. . . . (still had about 1200 more miles before the next oil change.
I was on my way to work on June 28th the car began to knock and shake wildly. My engine just blew, I had oil changes regularly. After doing some research and working to find me a new engine, my mechanic said that this engine is notorious for blowing and they usually go at 50,000 miles. At least I got 70,000. It is sitting in his shop right now, I can't pay for it. This car cost $30,000. New. I leased it now it will cost $36,000. And I will have nothing to show for it come December!.
Chrysler Sebring 2002 failed engine twice - one was the result that not enough oil change and it blew the engine. The 2nd time - claim the transmission blew the engine, which was to be under warranty but have refused claiming the abuse of the driver that caused this to happen. My believe is that there's a problem with the Sebring engines. The vehicle only have 65,000 plus miles and we had only had the car back 3 weeks when the engine blew the 2nd time. The dealer that repaired this vehicle has failed to provide me with all the work that was completed on this vehicle. The company is bob frensley Chrysler in goodlettsville, TN - 615 859-0000. I have requested this infomtion on serveral times and has yet being faxed. The vehicle is still at this Chrysler dealership.
The contact stated the engine started to knock, it was taken to a Chrysler dealership, and they stated the crankshaft needed to be replaced. The dealership then called and said it needed a new engine, and Chrysler would provide a rebuilt engine. According to the dealership, the problem was due to the contact's negligence. He changed the oil himself, and had no proof to show it was maintained properly. Therefore, Chrysler was not going to fix the vehicle under warranty.
I followed the maintenence schedule on my 2002 Chrysler Sebring with regular scheduled oil changes, yet I am now faced with replacing the engine because of oil sludge build up in my 2. 7 engine. I understand that this is a well known and common problem. The quote from the Chrysler service dept is 10k for replacement.
I was driving on the freeway in a construction zone. My car started accelerating and then the engine just stopped. It was during rush hour traffic, and due to the construction there was nowhere for me to avoid the ongoing traffic. A nice gentleman assisted me to the off ramp. I took my car to the nearest mechanic (tunex). They shared with me that I would need to tow the car to the dealer so that my warranty would cover the problem. I needed a new engine. The dealer is refusing to cover my car, even though I have oil change records and my mechanic went personally to the dealership, where his cousin works, and testified to my regular maintenance. The car is sitting in my garage pending arbitration.
While driving 60 mph vehicle seized. As a result, vehicle had to be towed to the dealership.
Engine.
