Chrysler lxi minivan -- 1997 -- airbag, horn failure [clockspring?] -- reported by many as a common issue. Car has about 52,000 miles. Engine was replaced (short block) at 13,000 miles.
I own a 97 Chrysler t & c. It appears that the clockspring in the steering wheel is defective and the mfg states there is not a problem but it could led to a airbag malfunction. It appears this is not covered by a recall which it should be. . . How many complaints have you received on this????.
Per conusmer the dealership stearns daimler Chrysler; graham nc; 336-228-6315; is refusing to honor the recall for the clockspring 02 v 293 000. Ts.
Upon starting the vehicle the srs light illuminated it stayed on longer than normal, and went off. Consumer restarted vehicle and light came back on again this time staying on. The owner took van to dealer and they informed him that the airbags were disabled, due to a timer spring. Please describe details. Mr.
The clock spring in the steering wheel is defective resulting in he horn, airbag and cruise control being inoperative.
This defect effects air bag and horn at the same time. This is a safety issue. We can not count on the air bag to work nor the horn to function in an emergency. I think its quite unusual that both are not functioning. Thank you for your concern and attention. Ph **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**765869.
The cruise control and the horn were inoperable, due to the srs light appearing on the dashboard. Dealer was aware of the problem. Ts jg.
Airbag and horn are not operable due to malfunction of clockspring. Dealer contacted.
Horn is not working. Took vehicle to dealer to check on horn, and found that clock spring was broken. Also, air bags were nor working. This is a safety hazard, and consumer should be notified of this .
The clock spring controls the air bag system, horn and cruise control system. I was told by the repair technician at the dealership that the part(clock spring) has failed on other vehicals and that Chrysler has recalls on some of these vehicals for the same part.
The clock spring seems to be a very common safety failure in the 1997 Chrysler town and country minivan. This clock spring provides power for major safety components including the airbag and horn. .
Clock spring problems, consumer states the horn will work sometimes, but cruise control is not working, also there was a noise from the steering wheel column, contact dealer and vehicle is being repaired. . Consumer also stated there was a coolant leak, the dealer replaced the radiator cap.
The airbag clock spring failure rate in Chrysler Mini-vans is unacceptable. . This is a serious safety issue and should be subject to recall.
Clockspring failure disables airbag.
There is apparently a common short in the steering column of these vehicles and the functions in the steering column stop working. Of particular concern is the horn and air bag. Seems to me that this is a design defect and a safety problem that the manufacturer should take responsibility for . . .
Brought vehicle to Chrysler dealer in bloomington, mn. They said that this was a common failure in Chrysler Mini vans. However, it is not a Chrysler problem, but up to the owner to repair. Estimated at $300. 00 cost. Also called chysler corporate customer service, same ansewer: too bad, they errored at my expense. This is a family vehicle and I don't consider the horn and airbags frills. Additionally, I understand that Chrysler has already replaced over 124,000 of these parts at owner expense.
Cruise control failed first due to clock spring. I did not have this fixed but now teh air bag is failing as well.
Problem appears to be identical to that described for the 1997 Dodge truck recal, NHTSA campaign 01v153000. I'd like to be assured that my problem is not related to the recall defect. *.
While driving with cruise control activated could not disengage that system by the steering column, and had to apply brakes to stop vehicle. Also, horn has failed to function. Dealership has examined vehicle, and determined that clock spring was the component that needed to be replaced. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Air baf light came on. Took van to dealer for repair. Was told air bag would not work because of defective clock spring. There is a mfg. Recall on 97 Dodge pickups but not on 97 chry minivans for defective clock spring.

Clock springs are not working properly and horn/cruise control have gone out due to this default. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything. The consumer's insurance would not pay for the clock spring replacement because they claim it was the manufacturing defect.
Horn/cruise control worked intermittently, then failed. I now understand the air bags were on that circuit as well, but I had no way of checking that at the time, and the garage did not give me any indication that this failure was dangerous. Please force them to fix these things on other Chrysler Mini-vans beofre someone gets seriously hurt.
