Investigation of Fuel Pump Leakage

Subject: Fuel pump leakage
Components covered:
  • Gasoline fuel system
  • Fuel pump
  • Tank assembly
Investigations Summary: This investigation was opened on Nov. 15, 2006. It was closed on Apr. 5, 2007. Note: this investigation has resulted in a vehicle safety recall.
Volvo is recalling approximately 1,681 model year (my) 2001-2002 s60 vehicles within the states of arizona and nevada to replace the fuel pump. Volvo reports that the fuel pump in these vehicles may experience a fuel leak as a result of fuel quality and hot climate conditions. The most common symptom reported is fuel smell. No fires, crashes or injuries are reported. My 2003 and later s60 vehicles contain a different design fuel pump. Data from Volvo indicates that a higher rate of fuel pump odor and/or leakage exists with vehicles registered in the hot states of arizona and nevada. Warranty data shows many more fuel pump claims for my 2001 and 2002 (244 and 140) compared with my 2003, 04, 05 and 06 (18, 3, 4, and 1 respectively). Furthermore, the fuel pump warranty claim activity is highest in the states of arizona and nevada (25% and 10%) compared with the remainder of the us (0. 16%) based on vehicle sales population in these areas. For addition details see recall 07v152. This investigation is closed
