| Investigations Summary: | NHTSA's office of defects investigation (odi) has received three complaints alleging a separation of the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column resulting in loss of steering control in Ford crown victoria police interceptor (cvpi) vehicles. Two of these complaints involved vehicles in a police fleet and one complaint involved a local government fleet vehicle in a different locale. All three complaints allege the separations occurred at low vehicle speeds. One complaint alleges the steering efforts increased just prior to the separation. Odi has also received 10 complaints from these fleets alleging the onset of separation of the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column based on fleet inspections. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to gather information to assess whether the subject vehicles contain a safety related defect. The odi complaints cited above can be viewed at www-odi. NHTSA.
