Subject: Power tailgate opens unintended
Components covered:
  • Body door
  • Body tailgate
  • Body tailgate hinge and attachments
Investigations Summary: On October 12, 2018, the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) opened preliminary evaluation (pe18-011) to investigate allegations of unintended power tailgates opening while driving in Ford super duty trucks. Unintended tailgate openings while driving may result in loss of unrestrained cargo and increase the risk of a crash. Analysis of data provided by Ford in response to pe18-011 showed high failure rates in the subject vehicles when compared to peer vehicles. Consequently, Ford conducted a recall (19v-864) to remedy all subject vehicles equipped with an automated tailgate. Following recall 19v-864, the office of defects investigation (odi) has received 11 vehicle owner questionnaires (voqs) and additional manufacturer field reports alleging unintended power tailgate openings in vehicles previously remedied under the recall. This recall query (rq) has been opened to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in the remedy provided by recall 19v-864. The following voq numbers are associated with the issue discussed in this opening resume: 11320302,11330252,11337686,11338360,11340989,11348594,11348759,11349252,11375262,11374295,11205304
