Steering Rack And Pinion Problems of Dodge Avenger

Steering wheel jammed all of the sudden out of nowhere while in motion on a city street after 3 years of owning it,causing me to not be able to make a right turn. Mechanic says rack and pinion needed replaced and was dangerous for the problem to appear out of nowhere. Also said it should not have happened for a 2014 model and it was a manufactur default but our warranty had expired 2 months previously.

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Avenger. While driving 5 mph, the vehicle made an unknown noise from the two front wheels. When driving over a bump in the road, the contact lost control of the steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 11v315000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 88,211.

Car has only 50,000 miles and have had to replace rack and pinion seven months ago. Now the clock spring is bad in steering resulting in borrowed time for air bag. So, if we do not replace this for the cost of $500, my air bag will not deploy in the event of an accident, resulting in possible death. This issue needs to be looked at as soon as possible with Dodge Avengers (2012). There should be no reason my steering wheel should have this many issues starting at 35,000 miles and still continuing. If an air bag does not deploy upon impact and myself, or my child, or someone dies as a result of the faulty clock spring and air bags, it will not be a very good situation. This issue needs to be looked at immediately. My car is currently at the Dodge auto shop and I purchased an extended warranty from mastertech when I purchased the vehicle, but apparently, my warranty does not cover air bags. This is something I feel that needs to be covered on all warranties, people's lives are worth covering. Please look into this safety issue with my car, and others as soon as possible. Thank you.

Rack and pinion I was progressing down hill. When I heard a loud pop in front end of my vehicle. The popping gets more frequent as one drives. So I took the vehicle home. And I placed in on driveup ramps and had someone twist the steering wheel back and forth well wouldnt you know the closer I placed my hand next the drivers side of the rack and pinion ( closest to the rack itself ) the more pronounced was the feeling pop pop pop.

There is a popping and knocking noise coming from front end and can be heard and felt through steering. It sounds like something is going to fall apart. Im terrified to drive my kids around. Found many many posts with exact same problem from owners of 2008-2011 models. It seems to be the rack and pinion that is defective!.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the power steering assist failed. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis and the contact was told that there was a problem with the rack and pinion however, they were unable to identify exactly what in the rack and pinion was malfunctioning. The vehicle was then taken to the contact's personal mechanic and the steering pump was replaced but the failure was not corrected. The mechanic then installed the original steering pump back on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 58,000.
