The contact owns a 1996 Dodge Caravan. The contact was driving 30 mph when he was advised by another motorist that fuel was leaking from the top of the fuel tank. The contact had just refueled the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and the contact was advised to replace the catalytic converter. The mechanic also stated that there was evidence of a small fire from the fuel tank. The mechanic referred the contact to the dealer to inquire about a potential recall on the vehicle (NHTSA campaign id number: 99v216000, fuel system, gasoline: delivery fuel pump). The dealer advised that the vehicle was included in the recall but the dealer refused repairs because of the damages from the small fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 156,398 and the current mileage was 156,432.

Recall 99v216 000/ fuel pump: while driving noticed smoke from hood. Pulled vehicle over, and popped hood, and saw the fire on top of engine. While trying to extinguish the fire, consumer received burns to the eye area. A day later, recall notice came by mail. Dealer was not contacted at this time.
Consumer is not satisfied with the recall notification, the vehicle was brought in to be repaired and was denied, vehicle had to be empty of gasoline in order to complete recall repair of the fuel pump module, the notification did not state this. (99v-216).

The vehicle has died four times at higway speed leaving the vehicle without steeringand brakes. The dealer is unable to reproduce the defect and guesses that the vehicle has a problem with the fuel pump. The problem started at 38k or right out of the warranty and they do not know what has caused it. I have a two year old boy and have had him with me when it broke down inthe the winter. Chrysler says their records are proprietary and will not tell me if they have had problems with their fuel pumps.

I will ask the other county directors to also send their comments. I have replaced 4 fuel pumps this year at a cost of 500. Per replacement.

Dealer attempted to replace fuel pump, but at first they did not have the parts in stock, then caused additional problems with the fuel tank, and entire fuel tank needed to be replaced. Repairs took about a month to complete, owner was informed that the recall repairs should take an hour.

Nhtsa recall 99v216000/manufacturer's recall 845/fuel pump. Had the necessary repairs done on 11-Mar-2000, and the remedy failed on 12-Mar-200. Fuel was leaking from the bolt which had either loosened up or was not tight enough. Was told by dealer that the torque setting was not adequate. Manufacturer suggested to increase torque specifications. Had the vehicle towed back to the dealer on 13-Mar-2000.

Recall repair (99v216) was completed on vehicle, however vehicle is continuing to leak fuel, dealer told consumer that in order to fix the problem it would not be included in recall and consumer would have to pay for repairs, consumer feels this should still be included in recall.
Vehicle was making a loud noise indicating that it needs gasoline. Consumer filled up vehicle with gasoline, and there is still a problem. She received a recall notice.
