16 problems related to brake disc pads have been reported for the 2002 Dodge Dakota. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that the front brake overheated and seized while driving. The contact replaced the front rotors and the brake pads however, the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 88,000.
Front brakes seized up causing the pads to smoulder and smoke. This is the latest instance. The first time, the brake pads and roters were replaced.
Rattling noise heard in the front end and pulsing brakes when stopping. Took vehicle to dealer. Technician indicated the front brakes were making the noise. Replaced the front brakes. I've had problems with the front brakes on this vehicle over and over again. In July 06, the rotors had to be replaced (see odi #10200119) with only 35,552 k on the truck. The new rotors had to be turned in March 07 (see odi #10200122) wiith ony 46,295 on the truck. At that time the person writing up the ticket asked me when I had the front brakes replaced because, in her words "they look brand new". Strangely, only 2 months later at 50,230 miles, the technician indicated the brakes had to be replaced. These were the original brakes. Total cost was $146.
Brakes start to squeak and shimmy. Squeaking very loud when coming to stop. Squeak lasts for about 3 days then sounds like metal to metal and can feel in pedal. Truck starts to shimmy at high speed then applying brakes to stop. I have down 3 complete brake jobs front and rear, best pads, rotors, everything. New replacement rotors have been replaced twice due to warping. The brakes should last longer the 3-4 months which in miles terms is less than 25,000 miles. I am now on my 4th brake job and I shouldn't be. There is a definite problem with the system. Needs to be addressed. This is becoming extremely costly.
: the contact stated while driving 35 mph the front brakes locked up without warning. The road was dry and the braking condition was normal. The contact further stated the brakes felt sluggish, as if riding on a flat tire. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the master cylinder, rotors and pads were replaced which corrected the problem.
2002 Dodge Dakota, 4 wheel drive,81,180 miles, front brakes seized. Had all brakes replaced on Aug 31, 2005. On November 10, 2005 left front rotor and pads seized, alert driving prevented possible vehicle. March 10, 2006, right front rotor seized and once again my alertness prevented another possible vehicle fire. This will be the fourth time the rotors and/or pads have been replaced on this vehicle.
Front disc brakes would not release while driving. Dealer could not find a problem. Occurred again on Dec 10, with front rotors turning bright red and smoking. Dealer found abs system was not releasing hydraulic fluid, replaced abs component, front rotors and brake pads. Occurred again on Dec 30 while driving, will return to dealer for resolution.
At 35,500 I was told that my front brakes and rotors had to be replaced because the rotors were pitted and brakes were worn. I could understand brakes pads need replacing (although I do most driving on a highway therefore not using brakes much) but rotors need replacing because of pitting; something is wrong here. In addition, ever since I've had this truck (rear anti-lock brakes) I notice that when the anti-lock kicks in it seems as though I've lost alot of braking power. I've found myself in the middle of an intersection at times because the truck wouldn't stop and I was not going that fast. I had a truck cut in front of me one day on the highway (someone in front of him had stopped) and the only way I advoided hitting him was to drive off on the shoulder of the road; the brakes quit working. I have a '92 Dakota with rear anti-lock brakes and it stops with out problems.
My 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 had a defect in the brakes/rotors which had to be replaced at 30000 miles. From checking chat sites this is apparently a very common problem with this truck. Dodge told me that they were not going to do anything for me that the truck was not under warranty.
I have a 2002 ram quad cab 4x4. The rotors needed to be turned to eliminate a severe brake vibration at about 15000 miles. At 28000 they need to be replaced to correct the problem again. I still have not worn out the original brake pads. Dodge customer service contends that the problem has occured because of driving style, road conditions and the weather. I contend that they are poorly designed rotors. A ram "tough" truck should be able to withstand my wife's highway commute to work. These brake "failures" reduce the effective braking ability of the truck, compromise control and put undue stresses on the other suspension components. These brakes are an accident waiting to happen.
I own a 2002 Dodge Dakota with 25000 miles just had to have front rotors and brake pads replaced.
Abs system causing steering wheel oscillation; brake rotors and pads replaced, no change. Rear abs pulsating causing rear axle to vibrate enough to momentarily lift rear tires off pavement. Neither problem extant during rain conditions. Problem intermittent: approx 30% of the time for front only; approx 60% for rear only; both conditions simultaneously, mixed.
Rotors and drums worn to below oem replacement specifications in only 20,000 mi. With no towing involved. At issue for safety is whether or not the design of the rotors and drums are acceptable for the additional weight of the quad-cab line. The wear on my vehicle is unusually fast as I have owned the vehicle for only 7 months and drive mostly highway miles. The brake pads (linings) are still in good shape so, in my opinion, the composition and design of the rotors and drums on my vehicle are not safe. If this issue is not addressed there will be the possibility for numerous brake failures on this model in the next few years. The parts should be recalled and the rotors and drums should be redesigned.
I am having problems with the brakes, which causes a shudder under moderate braking. The front brake pads are dragging all of the time, causing the rotors to overheat and warp. The warped rotors are the only problem that the dealer acknowledges, but there is obviously some defect that is causing the rotors to warp after only 15,000 miles.
Dodge Dakota 4x4 2002 /have been experiencing front end problems with truck since purchase. Brought in numerous times to dealer for brake issues[front rotors, pads, rear drums and discs]. Told multiple times there is no problem, its the way you drive. Truck has never been abused, very well cared for. After the 5th time to dealer finnally told that the upper ball joints need replacment. This was after one full year of denial. Notified dealer of noise at the steering wheel, told they could not vrify the complaint would probably go away after replacing upper ball joints. One week later after replacment of upper ball joints ,same noise reoccured [loud clunking sound at front end]took back to dealer only to be told that the bottom ball joints need replacment,no mention one week prior about wear on lower area. Dealer also stated that the noise noted coming from stering wheel from previous complaints was now thought to be an intermiediate shaft in the steering column, this same noise that one week earlier could not be identified. At 30,000 miles my entire differential gear assembbly needed replacment. I have been charged multiple warranty deductibles on what seems to me to be, the same problem and possibly a canidate for lemon status. At what point will the consumers right's be protected. I am joining a class action lawsuit in regards to Chrysler/daimler and suggest to everyone who reads this to do the same. . Read more...
Vehicle had excessive brake pad wear. The front pads has been replaced 4 times and the rear twice within a short period of time. Also at 4,000 when turning there was clucking noise in the front end of the truck. The front tires had a quarter inch cup in them. The upper ball joints were bad. The dealership replaced the ball joint but the problem recurred. The upper ball joint had to be replace again.
