3 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 01/30/2012

Began to experience heavy, difficult steering, especially when cold, and metallic clunking or grinding noises when turning tightly at low speeds accompanied by power steering pump whine on a 2004 Dodge Dakota 4. 7l v8 4x4 quad cab. Steering has also become abnormally heavy at normal driving speeds with difficulty centering steering wheel and reduced power steering assist. Inspection of steering components revealed severe rust on steering intermediate shaft upper u joint caused by road salt and moisture, which resulted in steering difficulty and strain on power steering system. This condition is extremely dangerous due to the extra effort required to steer the vehicle. Lubricating the joint with grease temporarily alleviates the issue, but problem returns after a period of time and will require eventual replacement of upper/lower intermediate shaft(s) at a parts cost of approximately $226, plus labor. Internet research reveals this is a widely occurring issue on this generation of Dakota pickup caused by poor design (lack of lubrication, no protection from the elements, and inadequate rust proofing) of a critical steering component, where failure can result in a serious safety hazard by making the vehicle more difficult to steer, and thus Chrysler group llc should be held liable for repair costs of this component.

4 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 10/03/2011

Around October started having trouble with steering would be tight then loosen up if it was warm. When it got colder it got very hard to steer. Changed the rack then every time you would turn it would pull tight and let loose and make truck swerve. Figured most have gotten a defective part changed steering rack again. Same problem decided to change steering pump this time. So much for that it didn't help either now I have a whining noise on top of the tight steering. I have already put alot of money into it and nothing seems to be working!!!!!!!!!.

5 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 08/11/2010

Issue with the steering, appeared to be a problem with the pump. Occurred at about 50k miles, 6 yrs. While driving the steering would get hard like the pump had failed, and then without warning, would return to the power assist and over steer due to the pressure I was already exerting. This took place at all speeds and under city and highway conditions. Very disconcerting. After about a week of this I took it to the dealer. They determined it was a failing fluid control valve in the power steering pump and replaced it. It was covered under the extended warranty I had purchased but would have cost over $1500.

6 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 07/17/2009

I can hardly steer my truck anymore even after replacing a power steering pump which I was told was the problem. It turned out that the pump was fine and after researching this very common problem on the web I am finding out that the steering issues are actually due to a faulty intermediate shaft. What does a girl have to do to get Dodge to correct this nationwide problem? it's seems only fair that a recall be initiated ASAP. I guess my only resort is to lube the shaft for now until Dodge finally acknowledges how many they have !@#$%.

7 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2004 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 09/18/2008

1) nothing out of the ordinary, just regular driving 2) its very hard to steer sometimes, its like stiff-loose-stiff-loose when I turn either left or right. This has been an ongoing problem and guys on Dodgeforum. Com have pinpointed the problem but dealers wont change the part, they want to change the power steering pump when the problem is in the intermediate arm, its expensive to fix and why should we pay for a manufacturer defect? the consequences unfortunately can be deadly. Sometimes its impossible to steer or make a quick turn, if someone cuts you off and you cant turn, well bad things can happen. 3)I cannot get the part (intermediate arm) because they are on backorder, coincidence??.

8 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2003 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 06/11/2006

The truck was taken in to be looked at because there was a vibration. I told them it was a u-joint or bearing going out. The truck had been in the same shop 4 times, for the same thing -the u-joint or bearing. The mechanic at the shop said that the tires needed to be balanced but they did not do that at thier shop. I tokk it to another place, they looked at it and said the tires did not need to be balanced, but they balnced them anyways. So I had two opinions on the truck. The next night I picked up the guys I work with and we went to work. On the way home the drive shaft, drive line, yolk, and transfercase came apart and tried to come up through the floorboard, causing holes in the floorboard, and it pulled the electrical wiring out which caused all the warning lights to come on. Anyone could have been hurt. I got the the truck to a nearby convienent store and I called a tow truck to tow my truck to the shop. I called my wife and we went and picked up all the parts off the highway. The truck, which is still under warranty. They took pictures and sent them to their reps. Their reps in another state said it was in 4 wheel drive in 4 low under extensive torque in a mud hole. It had not rained here in over a month. So the dirt road I was on was dry and smooth. I did not have it in four wheel drive. Why buy a 4 wheel drive if you are not going to use it. They said I was driving fast causing extensive torque!? I was driving the speed limit and people drive fast and their vehicles don't fall apart. They said they wouldn't cover the damage, even though their mechanic made a wrong diagnosis. It is their fault and they should take the responsibility to fix it, with no money coming out of my pocket. I get paid to drive to and from work. Now I don't have a truck to get me to work. The shop says they will pay half the cost to fix it and I can pay the other half. They say they are doing me a favor by doing this.

9 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

My 2005 Dodge Dakota has has a steering problem starting July 2005. The vehicle makes a loud noise/squealing sound when steering is turned either right or left. This noise is made with little movement of the steering wheel and continues to the stop. The vehicle has been serviced three times replacing the belt and tensioner twice, power steering pump, and power steering rack. Vehicle still makes noise and dealership has no idea what problem is. I contacted corporate and advised them of the problem and have been getting the run around from them also. They do not know what the problem is, yet they tell me it is safe to drive! as of today they continue to tell me that engineering is looking into the problem.

12 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 02/08/2004

The power steering pump failed (with no warning), causing me to lose control of my truck as it went around a corner. I lost control of the vehicle momentarily, due to the unexpected heavyness of the streeing and the low speed (about 10 mph). I did regain regained control and avoided hitting the cars in the oncoming lanes. I made it home, parked the truck until I could bring it in for service. The truck was not drivable around town with the power steering broken. I took it to the dealer and they replaced the power steering pump unit (part #52106253af). I believe I disposed of the unit. My truck is a 2000 Dodge Dakota quad cab 4x4 with the 4. 7 and automatic. The mileage on the truck was only 32,501, but the dealer told me the in service date of 23 June 2000 put the truck out of the warrantee period. Cost of the repair was $501. 23. The truck has not seen any off-road abuse and is responsibly driven.
