4 wheel drive is trying to engage on it's own even if it is not running. I am not going to go into detail because there are several complaints for the same problem. I am kind of curious as to why, with so many complaints, something hasn't been done about this problem.

"takata recall" the four wheel drive actuator tries shifting into 4 wheel drive even when I don't have the truck running. Also the stock stereo system will once in awhile turn on but now it won't and the acc will not work. My truck also tries to shift into 4 wheel drive while turning into my driveway or a parking space.

Driving down the road in motion the transmission slams and the vehicle struggles to move it comes up with 2 codes which are p2706 and p0700 and when it sets this code off check engine light comes on. It has caused us to almost accidents as vehicle wont move. I am scared to drive with kids in vehicle in fear of an accident.
Key and shift lever lockout malfunctioning: in a running vehicle in "drive", the key can be turned to the off position, turning the motor off, leaving the automatic transmission in "drive" and the key removed without the automatic transmission shift lever being placed in "park". If left in "drive" or "reverse", the vehicle will roll after the key is out, the brake is released and motor off. The shift lever moves freely back and forth between all positions with the key out of the ignition after following the sequence mentioned above. In order for the shift lever lockout to work properly again, the key must be removed only when the automatic transmission is in "park".

Truck is going into 4wd by itself. I almost crashed going at a high speed. Truck steering wheel locked up, tires locked up, truck lost all power and turned off. The 4x4 light turns on and off. When using the keyless entry button on remote I can hear a clicking and grinding noise under truck. The 4wd engages without me even being in the truck it happens sometimes when I ise the remote to unlock truck. I jad the 4wd engage also while making a turn. The wheels ceased up and couldnt get truck to advance. This has been happening since 2 weeks ago. Started with the 4wd light turning on amd off and progressively getting worse.

I was driving home on highway and heard a pop like sound found out in morning the pinion was the issue and neighbor found nut was lose and I got another and he is a mechanic so he installed it and a week later was making noise so I took it to a garage and they found it lose and installed another one and just the other day I took it back and found it was lose some so he ordered another one and he put some retainer or not sure but he will put the new nut on when it comes in and I see 44,000 trucks from 2009 to 2010 and trucks from 2005 have pinion problems so I am amazed that 2008 has same issue and I see so many post ball joints I did one side already and for god to and now air bag I see and had fords and chevy and all I repaired on the were normal things.
4x4 keeps activating by itself, even when off or in the highway.
Complaint #10734989 7-19-2015. No response from you. Calling and sending e mails since October 2013 not just your department! no one will help. You, Dodge or the person when I was sitting on the side of 71s. & promised someone would call me back - OH it was Friday afternoon and everyone was leaving work! no one will help me resolve this. Do I and have to get killed before anyone will start to listen! purchased this vehicle in July 2010. When driving at a speed of 65, long distance the engine light comes on, slows me down to 45. The engine makes the loudest whinning (like something is stuck under the hood) like it wants to blow up!!!pull over - wait til the light goes off. Temperature gauges do not show overheating. I've started replacing parts. Still light comes on and slows me down to 45 I actually am very upset about no one helping me. I was told to take to dealer when it does it. . I did and they can't find anything wrong because light is now off to drive it there. They tell me to leave it and they will go thru it. "I don't have the money to have them do this" my life as well as my grandchildren, father, me and anyone that I have had in this car is at risk. Being on the side of the expressways or exit ramps waiting for this light to go off with semi's, cars, flying by. People are driving off roads with distracted driving hitting people parked on the side. I don't want to be a fatality! my grandchildren were in the back seat and I was parked along i96. My father (alz) was in the car while I was parked on us23. My husband and I. . . When do I get help. When someone is dead. Please please is it the cvt!!! I don't know anymore. . . . I was depending on you to help me or Dodge. I have to drive to nc and I am actually scared to drive the distance.

Case number: 894366 /this truck has never stopped safely since I purchased it new (02-07-2011/ millage now 28455). When you have to make an emergency stop it might or might not bring it to a stop. Last week my wife and I tried to avoid a collision when a car made a quick turn in front of us and then this car had to make a quick stop. When we applied the brakes it made a very rough sound under front end. . . (as usual. . . But traveled 15 ft. Before it applied the brakes. . . And we were only 3ft. Away from a serious accident). I have discussed this brake problem on many occasions when I would take it in for service with the people who check me in but,. . . They always tell me the brakes are bunny hopping and this is normal for the new trucks and there is nothing wrong with them. . . (but never check them out to make sure). We have had many new vehicles but they all stopped the way they should except this one. I have called this problem to Dodge attention twice and will take it back to efird Chrysler florence, SC Thursday 12-10 '15 and ask them once more to check this truck out. If they don't what are my options? I have also had problems with my transmission rough changing. They have adjusted it twice in the past but after a year or two it starts doing the same thing again. I also want them to fix this transmission once and for good. If you can advise me please do. Sincerely, george grantham.

Case nunber:894366. I contacted you 12/04/15 concerning brakes on this truck and I also told you that every time I would try an discuss this issue with efird Chrysler florence, SC they would tell me the brakes are antilock system and it was normal for them to make noise when applied for emergency stopping. I took this truck back 12-10-15 and told them about the near accident my wife and I had on 12-01-15 making an emergency stop. This truck (traveled 15ft. ) after applying the brakes before it started braking to stop this vehicle and we were 3ft. Away from making contact with another vehicle. Now to me this is serious and we are afraid of this vehicle in emergency stops. It has had poor stopping before but never like this. I contacted Chrysler several times about the problem with the brakes but, contacting Chrysler you can get into a lot of conversation but not much action. Efird Chrysler still says this is normal . . . But has not given me a reason for this delayed stopping. I have done all I know to do with efird and Chrysler concerning this problem and I am not getting any results. We still have not been able to get the airbag repair done on this truck or the 2010 challenger /r37/NHTSA 15v-444 / VIN 2b3cj5dt3ah137069.
Tl - the contact owns a 2002 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift into park. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 148,000. Pm.
Pinion bearing froze up spinning race in rear end housing. This required replacement of all bearings and house assembly. Pinion bearing was defective at the time it was installed. Pickup has only 48k miles on it. Chrysler was contacted agreed it was bad but refused to help on replacement. Said warranty was only good to 36k. This happened on the highway but was able to get truck to garage. All required services had been completed per Chrysler requirements.
Truck shifted into 4 wheel drive by itself. Event occurred without any warning lights or indication it was 4 wheel drive. I noticed truck was in 4 wheel drive when I was slowing to make a left hand turn at about 20 mph and the steering was difficult and front tires were hopping and jerking until I stopped. I think this is an unsafe condition and that the truck should failsafe and never allow the truck to go into four wheel drive if some component in system fails. A warning light should come on and the system should block any attempt to engage 4 wheel drive. Luckily this event occurred at low speed and without a vehicle in front of me.
On my 2007 Dodge Dakota, vehicle randomly engages 4wd mode without warning, causing momentary loss of control. My vehicle has done this twice so far, once at highway speeds. In addition, when vehicle enters 4wd drive mode, tight steering and other handling limitations exist, causing further possibility of losing control of the vehicle. There are several similar complaints regarding this defect on the NHTSA site, as well as searching google will indicate hundreds of Dodge owners with similar experiences. This defect is a critical safety concern.

Put in park and it rolled down drive into road and hit a parked car.
Crank position sensor failed causing total loss of engine power harsh downshift from transmision at speed and loss of power brakes and power stearing could get someone killed if it was in a intersection or on the highway replacement should be free + towing.
Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that while parked, the vehicle switches from 2 wheel high gear in to 4 wheel low gear. The service 4 wheel warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or repaired and the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000. Ed.
The "check 4wd" indicator light comes on at random times and the 4wd engages on it's own. Even parked with no key in the ignition you can here the electronic hubs engage and disengage. This makes driving the vehicle a real hazard, since the handling characteristics change dramatically when in 4wd on dry pavement. I have done much research and found many people that have had or do have this exact symptom, including several on you complaints page.
Vehicle switched into 4wd by itself at high speeds occasionally. When the 4wd is engaged on dry pavement handling is reduced.
I was attempting to pass a semi. The cruise was set at 70. The semi sped up to 70 also and I had to touch my accelerator to get past him. As I did, my transmission dropped into neutral and I had to let off the accelerator. It dropped back into gear at 65. I was then able to speed up to 75 and pass the semi. I had a line of cars behind me also doing 70.
I was driving in a small neighborhood and I hear a very distinct ticking noise coming from the front passenger side, after I looked at the area I noticed that the exhaust manifold bolts and heat shield were broke . This can cause exhaust fumes to come into the car while driving and should be taken care of.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in a crash and was repaired; however, the repairs were not completed correctly. After driving the vehicle home the following day, the vehicle was unable to shift into drive. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed with transmission damage. The transmission was replaced. Also, while driving various speeds, the vehicle would veer to the left or right inadvertently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with several different issues, such as a damaged front cross member, a fractured front passenger side stabilizer link, a worn passenger side upper control bushing, and other issues. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
Warning indicator flashed "4lo" multiple times, "4lock", then "svc 4wd". 4lock autonomously engaged with no visual indication.
Transmission went out. Saw recall notice on internet. Cannot go in reverse.
Driving down the road at 55 miles an hour the 4lo light started flashing like it was trying to shift into 4lo. It also shifted into tow neutral without even being started. You can hear the servo motor trying to engage the 4wd with the truck parked. I'm worried about what would happen if the 4lo engaged on the interstate at 70 mph.
While driving, the amber service 4wd light comes on followed by a tone. The dash switch(2wd, 4lock, 4lo) is rendered inoperable. The vehicle will put itself into 4lo when you slow and try to turn. In many situations, this can be very hazardous to the driver and dangerous to the drivetrain. Sometimes the 4lock or 4lo lights will blink randomly while driving, then lead to the service 4wd light coming on. Checking online, many owners of Dakotas are having similar pro- blems, wondering why there hasn't been service bulletins, warnings on this DE- fect, safety recalls, or acknowledge by the manufacturer of this situation.
The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Dakota. The contact stated that the key fob failed to lock and unlock the vehicle. Additionally, the driver¿s side master window control was also inoperable and the doors could not be locked or unlocked. The contact then started the engine and the 4-wheel drive warning light illuminated. The headlights and tail lights had also failed to illuminate. The vehicle was taken the dealer for diagnosis where the dealer stated that the central timer module would need to be repaired. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 02v322000 (exterior lighting) however, the contact was advised by the manufacturer that the VIN was not included in the recall campaign. The contact believed that the failure described in the recall was the same failure that had been experienced with his vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 128,000.
