Eight problems related to battery have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Back in the summer of 2008 I was having issues with my 1999 Dodge Durango shutting off for no reason. I did some online searching and found the pcm,ecm unit was over heating, after cooling it with an ice pack for 5 minutes the car would start again. After 3 months I finally bought I rebuilt pcm on ebay, they programmed the unit for my car and it ran better then ever. Well today 6/4/2010 don't you know it did it again but this time the unit is completely dead, I still have the old unit and popped that in and wow it started. We need to fight Dodge on this to relocate the pcm on the firewall near the battery where it stays cool. All the heat from the engine is blown to that side of the car causing this issue. How to do we get Dodge to fix this like others have said someone will get hurt and I hate to trash a car with only 74,000 miles on it.
Durango shut off without warning, while driving, multiple times. Once shut off on freeway in heavy traffic. Power steering did not work. Could not turn away from other vehicles. Only thing that worked was the brakes. Shut off at least 4 or 5 other times in parking lots, usually after initial start. Sometimes started right back up, sometimes took up to 30 minutes to start again. Battery had good charge. No delay to start, just shuts off without warning. We do not drive it on the freeway anymore for fear it will shut off and cause an accident. Timing for the failure is unpredictable. Husband tried to replay the circumstances and make it shut off, didn't shut off. Blinkers work intermittently. Have not tried repairing it yet. Did some research online, seems many people have this same problem with the same vehicle and none of the usual remedies work. I am planning to take it to the dealership, but am hesitant to waste money on something they don't know how to fix. Diagnostic tests for others have been negative. This problem has occurred several times and began about 6 months ago. Freeway incident was around may this year.
I own a 1999 Dodge Durango with approximately 64,000 miles. Immediately upon purchasing the vehichle I have experienced a large poping and dragging sound when turning or performing a u-turn. Recently I attempted to make a u-turn and my car nearly lost control and felt as if it would tip over. I took the vehicle in to cerritos Dodge and I was advised that the vehichles upper and lower, right and left ball joints were completely shot. All were replaced. I continue to experience the popping and dragging sounds. Upon purchasing the vehichle, I have had to change the (all four) tires 3 times, obtain 3 wheel alignments, change the battery (went completely dead at approximately 25,000 miles) repair the brake light switch (brake lights wouldn't turn off), and repair door/hatch locks (unable to lock and make loud buzzing and clicking sound).
The battery exploded when I attempted to start the car. The top and most of the sides were gone.
Battery exploded when starting car spilling acid.
Battery exploded upon starting vehicle, dealer was notified, and unwilling to assist in this matter. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
My car started making these loud noises like a truck, I took it to the dealer and they told me that it was the barons, and that it was caused by not putting oil in the car or racing it. They told me that it was not under warranty and that it will cost $4000 to have it fixed. I have my oil change every 3 months, and I go to baltimore, MD and washington DC about twice a week. They will not fix it.
Consumer got into vehicle an attempted to start but battery exploded without warning when the key was turned.
