general problems of the 1999 Dodge Durango - part 1

113 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2020

Phantom misfire can drop engine rpm and stall. Every possible sensor replaced. Fuel pump, injectors replaced. Entire ignition system replaced. There has never been a check engine light and while the phantom misfire happens a professional code reader shows no misfire and no history of events. Can happen at anytime, any speed. At slower speed the engine will cut off while driving causing a dangerous problem with loss of steering and brake hydraulics. Condition has been happening for over five years and I'm into this demon for thousands of dollars.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2019

Hello my name is brandon I brought this SUV 12/3/2019 . The guy I bought this SUV from he told me there's an electrical issue with the battery to the transmission I found there was several things wrong with it the steering wheel is loose. Need a tune-up OH when I got home the car starts smoking inside then the outside that's how it caught on fire underneath to the firewall I think not sure please help.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2019

The vehicle loses all power and wont start and on the odometer it say no bus but u wait a few minutes sometimes up to fifteen minutes it will restart but no codes come up with the odb2.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2019

When outside temperature goes beyond 80 degrees fahrenheit, while in motion, the computer has shut off the engine multiple times and a code saying no bus is displayed in the dash for a few seconds. It has happened to me going 70 mph. It has happened going 45 mph and as low as 20 mph. All I have to do is pull over and let the computer cool off and it turns on again. This is very dangerous as power steering shuts off and brakes become very hard. I have a great car in the winter. In the summer it's a death trap that can shut off engine, power steering and brakes in the middle of the freeway. Check youtube and google for "Dodge Durango no bus" and you will find this is a major issue with the computer.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2019

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. Vehicle lost power nearly stranded. Concerned about being injured or killed due to vehicle losing electrical power no electrically power in vehicle ecm overheat while driving at 55 mph, without warning the vehicle lost electrical power. The contact stated that the power steering and brakes became inoperable. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after approximately 20 minutes. The vehicle was restarted and driven for approximately one mile before the vehicle lost electrical power once again. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The diagnostic code reader stated no buss. The contact was informed that the engine control module (ecm) overheated due to its placement in proximity to the exhaust manifold. Additionally, the contact stated that the nut on the steering wheel knuckle was stripped which caused the steering to be difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and several unnamed dealers were contacted and notified of the failure. The contact was informed by the manufacturer that there would be no assistance offered. The approximate failure mileage was unknown. Ah.

6 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2017

My Dodge Durango will suddenly shut off while I'm driving it has happened several times on the highway I lose all power and have almost got into accidents when this has happened it also happened when my car is just sitting it happens after the car has been on for about 15 mins I have read online from several other people that this has happened to them as well.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2017

1999 Dodge Durango pcm/ecu will fail when it gets hot, giving a no bus, and causing the engine to stall and lose power steering and brakes. This has happened to my vehicle on numerous occasions at highway speed where I was barely able to control the vehicle. This is a huge safety issue. I have had the pcm/ecu replaced over 5 times, which is extremely dangerous. Experts have pin pointed the issues to certain chips coming unsoldered in the pcm/ecu due to heat. Keenan laws has youtube videos on exactly what the issues are, as well as many other have done. Dodge contract's out the soldering of these chips, but they don't do a good job as some don't work at all. For example, we put three in before we got one that worked. This is inexcusable and puts people lives at very high risk. I paid around $800 to a Dodge dealership in santa rosa California for a pcm/ecu that lasted only months. It takes a tremendous amount of strength to control the Durango with no power steering and brakes. Dodge hasn't been a help or the pcm/ecu rebuilders. Currently I'm waiting on another rebuilt pcm/ecu, which the rebuilder can't even give a time when I could get one. The date below is the most current incident, but this has been going on since about 2009 and approximately 170,000 miles.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2017

The pcm has already been replaced and it ran perfectly fine for 2 months and the same problem starting happening shutting off while im driving ive almost been in 3 car accidents while I was driving cause the vehicle shut itself off while I was driving on a 45 mph road an twice on the highway driving 65mph something needs to been down so once on city streets and 2 times on state route 75 highway.

9 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2017

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While driving 75 mph, the vehicle experienced a complete loss of power. The failure occurred without warning. Cass burch (801 e screen st, quitman, GA) was contacted and offered no assistance. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic control module was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2016

Ecm shuts my Durango off while driving due to heat from engine. Very scary and dangerous. I was driving on the highway from my sons football game when out of nowhere I lose all power and my steering wheel locks up, just barely was I able to avoid causing a multiple vehicle pileup also abs pops up for most of the time.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

The engine shuts off while driving. Yes in motion and on city street loss of power steering and brakes. There has been hundreds of complaints listed on the internet under this model and year. It appears that the problem may be one of several problems I have e mailed customerassist@Chrysler. Com several times and they pretend that they know nothing about this problem they continue to put up a smoke screen, I have copies of the correspondence if you would like it, the car is parked since it is unsafe to drive, this problem occurred two different times.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2016

Another randomly stalling Durango. Sometimes starts back immediately, sometimes after a few hours.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2016

Abs light and break light come on after rolling down the road there is a lot of people complaining about this I would like to know is this could be a recall on this.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2015

Usually happens when it is hot out but the truck just shuts off with out notice all power too all gauges go to 0 power steering. Does not matter how fast or slow I am going. I have to park it and let it sit anywhere from 5 minutes up to two hours. I have had several parts replaced and the problem continues no one seems to have an answer. This is so dangerous not only for me but also all other drivers on the road. This needs to be figured out soon I fear for my life and the life of others.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2015

The vehicle is hard to steer it also has a problem disengaging the 4 wheel drive the vehicle's tires in the front rub against the wheel wells causing uneven tread wear the vehicle is deemed unsafe also due to the vehicle's suspension bushings in the front in the tie rods in the front of the vehicle are loose causing a over compensation and under compensation for steering possibly resulting in fatality ultimately due to a bad lane change forcing the vehicle to collide with another vehicle ending up ultimately in fatality.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 40 mph, the engine stalled as the speedometer and the rpm gauges decreased to zero without warning. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed that the computer needed to be replace. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 9,000. Pam.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2014

Electrical problem just shuts the whole electrical system down "while I'm driving", at any speed. . . Doesn't matter the temperature, it happens on any day, and at random. Major safety issue, brakes and steering become unusable. Just missed rear ending a vehicle the other day which got me to have to write this. I have to remove electrical terminal from post for 30 seconds, put back on terminal post, then hopefully it starts. I cant even drive my family anymore due to safety hazard. It has happened at least thirty times now. Local Dodge dealer says they have no idea whats the matter, yet hundreds of owners online postings prove what I am saying. Please resolve this before someone, perhaps myself, dies. . . . .

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2013

Hampton, va. This morning I was driving my kids to school, and the truck just turned off. I lost the power steering & brakes. I was in a school zone, I was going under 25 mph when this happened. After me and the kids pushed the car out of the street, I let the truck cool off for about 20 minutes then it started up and I was able to drive home. By my understanding from blogs and the Dodge customer service is a known issue, but nothing has been done about this.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2013

On 9/8/2013, the car quit without warning. The car had been running at highway speed without issue and without any warning lights. The engine stopped running many miles from any assistance. The engine continued to crank over. There was plenty of gasoline. There was no spark from the ignition system, coil, plugs, etc. There have many previous events. There have been many engine electrical system repairs. Including the pcm at ~$1600 55 weeks ago.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2012

I was driving on the highway at 65mph, and the vehicle shut off completely. Lost power steering, power brakes, everything. Had 3 small children in the car and had to with all my power (I am 5'9" 235 lbs) navigate the vehicle to the side of the road. I have found this is extremely common problem with this vehicle. Many of the posts state is a manufacturing flaw of where the pcm is placed in the engine.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2012

While driving on a highway at speeds of 60-65 mph, with my child, my vehicle's engine died without warning, without indications of imminent failure, no symptoms or signs of stress. The dash lights and alarms did not send notification until I was already coasting down the side of the emergency lane. While trying to steer the suddenly nonpowered steering wheel thru traffic I began to worry if we were going to make it to the side without hurting anyone or damaging any vehicles. At the time I was just thankful to have made it home with my child in one piece but soon I realized this story could have had a much worse outcome. The vehicle's ecm was faulty and resulted in an electrical issue that caused the entire system to temporarily shutdown without notice.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2012

I was pulling a boat to the lake when the vehicle just cut off , I lost all power such as power steering ,power brakes . This could have cause a major accident ! once I got on the side of the road and opened the hood I moved around the wires on the computer , I heard the fuel pump engage and then I started it . It ran a few minutes and did it again ! both times their was a bus error on the odometer . As I have studied this problem ,computers (pcm) are overheating and causing connection problems . This is going to cause people to have accidents and get people killed ! Dodge needs to fix this problem ! there are many !.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2012

Vehicle shuts down without warning also losing power steering, brakes etc. May or may not start after 15 minutes or so. Have had grandkids with me on 2 separate occasions, one being sitting in 90 degree heat for over an hour and vehicle wouldnt start, waiting on tow. Another time vehicle shut down and had to jump lanes and coast to get to side road to stop. Very, very dangerous situations many times! havent drove it since. Sitting in driveway around 3 months. Abs has also gone out.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2012

Vehicle dies with no notice, problem is pcm. This is a widely known problem with several years of the Dodge products. The pcm fails and the car can lose power while in operation. This is a dangerous situation because the car can lose power while operating on the highway or at any speed! Dodge refuses to acknowledge the problem. A replacement pcm is reported to resolve the problem temporarily. Some complaints indicate that it's an overheating issue, however mine stalls and dies in various weather conditions. Usually, I can unplug the connectors to the pcm and plug them back in to reset the computer and the vehicle will start and run again for a period of time. Since this problem is so unpredictable, the car is not safe to have on the road.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

To whom it may concern,it seems like this is a serious problem that Dodge should have to stand behind. It is very dangerous. The vehicle just dies. Will start up about 5 minutes later. Seems like a computer problem. I have previewed where this has happened to a lot of people. Same problem.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While parked, the contact activated the headlights; however the flashers began to illuminate. The low and high beam headlights failed to function at any given time. The manufacturer issued a voluntary recall pertaining to the headlights. The VIN was not included in the recall defect. The vehicle had not been repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 193,000. Js.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. After sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. It will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. Multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. Dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2011

My Durango randomly dies during operation and on several occasions has endangered lifes of civilians.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2011

Warm weather the engine quits. 3 time within two weeks driving 65-70 mph on highway while pulling a boat all 3 times. The problem is the pcm on the passengers side of the engine compartment. Gets to hot and shuts the engine down. No brakes, no steering! this problem is documented in Dodge forums thousands of times with everyone quoting the exact same issues with nothing being done nor any fixes that will work.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

Car shuts down randomly when driving, in various weather conditions (hot, cold, warm, wet, etc) problem is with over heating pcm - see other peoples issues here. . Read more...

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the two rear driver and passenger windows would just fall down on their own. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and who advised her that the actuators failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 170,000. Rvk.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

Driving the vehicle and it shuts off without warning. After a short period of time the vehicle will restart and go a couple of miles and shut off again with out warning.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2011

This has happened on numerous occasions. While driving, especially in extremely hot or extremely cool situations, the vehicle engine shuts down unexpectedly. First symptom - check engine light. Second symptom (3 seconds later) - fuel gauge from half full to empty. Third symptom (immediate) - low fuel warning light. Fourth symptom (2 seconds later) - low fuel warning light. Fifth symptom - engine shut down at highway speed. Completely lost vehicle control. No power steering, no power brakes. Muscled car to the side of the road and barely avoided an accident. Could have been easily killed. Problem appears pcm-related, but from what I've read, numerous people have paid $1,000 for a new pcm only to have the same results. This is a serious problem and has been reported thousands of times on the internet. I hope somebody does something with Dodge on this before a child is killed when the truck dies at highway speed.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

When driving my 99 Dodge Durango it dies when it's hot outside without warning and won't start for 30 minutes or so. This is a major safety isssue!!! no one seems to know what the problem is and this is very frustrating to me. Is there a recall in regards to this issue?? if not there should be!!.

35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2011

We experienced within 1 week of purchase (March 2011) the frequent stalling out, along with total loss of power brakes and power steering that has been reported by hundreds of 1999 owners. The problem occurs in primarily hot summer weather, but has also occurred in spring and fall weather with any temps over 70 degrees, although less frequently. The actions required are to raise the hood, wait for the unit to cool (or cool it artificially with cold water or ice pack) until the vehicle will restart. Over a year period of experimenting, I have lessened but not cured the problem. All the solutions are related to increasing the airflow to the cpu/pcm area, which chronically overheats due to its location. If Dodge would recall the 1999 model, I can imagine either of two solutions at minimal cost. (photos of my solutions are available. ) if the air guard to the passenger side of the radiator has the top half removed, then it is simple to install an intake tube or shaft to direct air thru the grille to the pcm. A plastic, easy installed unit would be the lowest cost solution. Failing this, the relocation of the pcm with a mounting bracket kit and a harness extension would allow placement of the unit in a cooler location (like right behind the new grille opening). My wife loses all braking and steering power assist when the engine stalls, sometimes when turning across oncoming traffic. This is a severe safety issue. It has occurred at least twice a week in hot weather for a year now, and on may 28th, 2012, it occurred 6 times within 40 miles during a 120 mile trip.
