Steel brake lines burst. The steel lines are all rusted and corroded. Even the factory replacement pieces corroded again. This happened 2 times and even when I replaced them with original factory pieces ,it happened again . This can't be a coincidence.
4 times in the last two weeks while driving in heavy city traffic in the los angeles, CA area the engine turned off, without warning, warning lights, or warning sounds. All guages went to zero. There was no abnormal function of the vehicle before each incident. Power assist to steering and brakes were also lost. Each time it was in dry, sunny weather with the temperature between 60 and 80 degrees fahrenheit. Each time I was able to coast to a curb or physically push the vehicle out of traffic. Each time, except one, the engine would not start immediately afterward. The engine would turn over briskly but would not start. After 4 to 6 attempts the car would start normally and then run normally as if nothing had ever happened. Each time the gasoline tank was at least one quarter full. Two additional times in the last two months the engine shut off while driving and then almost immediately turned back on again. The transmission was completely rebuilt 5 months ago. This had the potential to cause a crash but did not in each of the instances.
Ecm shuts my Durango off while driving due to heat from engine. Very scary and dangerous. I was driving on the highway from my sons football game when out of nowhere I lose all power and my steering wheel locks up, just barely was I able to avoid causing a multiple vehicle pileup also abs pops up for most of the time.
While driving at various times on the highways my car shuts down and I lose steering and power brakes which makes it hard to slow down and move to side of road. After 10 to 15 min l can restart my car.
Electrical problem just shuts the whole electrical system down "while I'm driving", at any speed. . . Doesn't matter the temperature, it happens on any day, and at random. Major safety issue, brakes and steering become unusable. Just missed rear ending a vehicle the other day which got me to have to write this. I have to remove electrical terminal from post for 30 seconds, put back on terminal post, then hopefully it starts. I cant even drive my family anymore due to safety hazard. It has happened at least thirty times now. Local Dodge dealer says they have no idea whats the matter, yet hundreds of owners online postings prove what I am saying. Please resolve this before someone, perhaps myself, dies. . . . .
I was driving about 25 miles per hour and everything on the system stopped. The steering stopped working, the brakes stopped working and the car turned off. It tends to happen on bumpy roads. This has happened multiple times in my 1999 Dodge Durango during the past year. I think it might be related to the ignition problem affecting other Chrysler products. The Durango was not involved in that recall, but it seems as though this is exactly what happens with my truck.
On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. Loss of power steering and power brakes. Would turn over, but not restart. After waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. Happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. Inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. Sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. Dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed!.
When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. After sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. It will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. Multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. Dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.
Early generation Dodge Durango (98-01) has abs problems, causing abs to shut down, leaving the brake pedal very low. I have researched this to be a very common problem and the vehicle was never recalled on this. Fix to problem seems to only be a complete brake system rebuild, with aftermarket parts to fix the problem and not have it return again. I have heard that some people have lost their lives due to this problem and I think it should be addressed even though these vehicles are old, they are not safe and need to be recalled for the owners and everyone safety around them.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango and the "brakes" doesn't work. When I was driving I would hear a rumble sound then all of a sudden when I try to brake the "brakes" wouldn't work or it would take a sec to kick in. I have read a couple of consumers issues with this and it sounds like it all lead back to the abs system. Shouldn't this be a recall not just a service bulletin?.
1999 Dodge Durango experienced problems with control arms and ball joint failures. The consumer had all the ball joints replaced in late 2003 after hearing incidents from the media. In late 2004, the consumer was involved in a minor low speed accident and the left control arm assembly including the left ball joint were replaced. (the consumer did not state if there was damage to the vehicle). After the repair the consumes wife started to hear a popping sound, the vehicle was returned to the dealer but no problem was found but they did check all the bolts and tightened to specs. Immediately after picking up the vehicle the noise was still there. The consumer inspected the vehicle himself by removing the left front tire and wheel assembly and found the cotter pin installation poorly done on the upper ball joint. The consumer then found the lower control arm assembly which had previously been repaired to be poorly done as well. The brakes squeaked, but the consumer declined the repairs.
Ball joint repairs, tires and brakes.
Vehicle was taken to the dealer for service of the brakes. Mechanic determined that upper and lower ball joints and tie rod had to be replaced.
When applying brakes vehicle tilted over and slid.
When I purchased the vehicle in June of 2002. The upper and lower ball joints had to be replaced. The vehicle had 49,000 miles on it. The cost was over $900. 00. Less than a year later, at 62,000 miles the upper ball joint and tie rod ends and brakes and rotors need replaced.
Stop abruptedly on dry roads under 45 mph and the consumer thinks that the front brakes locked up and the vehicle skid into the intersection. Dealer said nothing wrong with the brakes.
While driving over bumps, the vehicle would shake, making it very difficult for the driver to control the vehicle. The consumer noticed that the vehicle was to the right. The service dealer stated that the upper/lower ball joints and the inner tie rods were prematurely worn and an alignment would have been of no help. The service dealer recommended a replacement of the worn parts as the problem would only get worse and would become a safety issue. The consumer was informed the vehicle needed brakes.
After the brakes were serviced they continued to squeak upon applying the brake pedal. The loud squeak seems to get become worse over time.
Pe 03-032, front suspension upper ball joints: front upper ball joints have completely worn out. Also, the brakes did not engage properly.
The consumer believes he has ball joint or severe brake problem.
When the driver applied the brake while driving at a low speed the brake pedal went to the floor. The vehicle coasted to a stop.
