3 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2018

4 times in the last two weeks while driving in heavy city traffic in the los angeles, CA area the engine turned off, without warning, warning lights, or warning sounds. All guages went to zero. There was no abnormal function of the vehicle before each incident. Power assist to steering and brakes were also lost. Each time it was in dry, sunny weather with the temperature between 60 and 80 degrees fahrenheit. Each time I was able to coast to a curb or physically push the vehicle out of traffic. Each time, except one, the engine would not start immediately afterward. The engine would turn over briskly but would not start. After 4 to 6 attempts the car would start normally and then run normally as if nothing had ever happened. Each time the gasoline tank was at least one quarter full. Two additional times in the last two months the engine shut off while driving and then almost immediately turned back on again. The transmission was completely rebuilt 5 months ago. This had the potential to cause a crash but did not in each of the instances.

4 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2017

My steering is bad I have little control over vehicle at high speeds I think it's in the wheel itself or maybe airbags?. Replaced brake parts front and back and still problems with trying to stop but skid . Hub replaced and its better. Head lights do not work properly.

6 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2015

Usually happens when it is hot out but the truck just shuts off with out notice all power too all gauges go to 0 power steering. Does not matter how fast or slow I am going. I have to park it and let it sit anywhere from 5 minutes up to two hours. I have had several parts replaced and the problem continues no one seems to have an answer. This is so dangerous not only for me but also all other drivers on the road. This needs to be figured out soon I fear for my life and the life of others.

7 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/29/2015

Nut came off left front wheel bearing causing wheel to come off vehicle. When picking up pieces, I noticed that there is no cotter key to keep the nut from backing off. Had this happened at higher speeds, the result would have been very serious.

9 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2013

I was driving about 25 miles per hour and everything on the system stopped. The steering stopped working, the brakes stopped working and the car turned off. It tends to happen on bumpy roads. This has happened multiple times in my 1999 Dodge Durango during the past year. I think it might be related to the ignition problem affecting other Chrysler products. The Durango was not involved in that recall, but it seems as though this is exactly what happens with my truck.

10 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2012

While driving vehicle into a parking spot I heard some very noticeable clicking while making a slight turn then a loud noise kinda like metal dropping on to the street from front end then I experience total loss of steering of my Durango. The vehicle continued to run, I was unable to steer at all. I examined under the hood I discovered the belt drive came off. I a ran the belt back around all of the components the vehicle again starts but I cant turn the wheel at all. . . . Not happy!.

11 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2012

On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. Loss of power steering and power brakes. Would turn over, but not restart. After waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. Happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. Inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. Sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. Dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed!.

12 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

Recently purchased this vehicle in great shape inside and out, runs great. . The dealer did the state inspection on it and replaced both side upper and lower ball joints and the right front hub/wheel bearing. Now 3 weeks later upper and lower ball join on one side need to be replaced again. . This is ridiculous, I have researched and seen all the complaints pertaining to this problem and am dumb founded nothing has been done about it. I just bought it so don't have any information for prior owners.

15 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2010

The passenger side steering knuckle in my 99 Dodge Durango slt 5. 9l v8 magnum failed at the steering knuckle caliper pin holes possibly due the the threads in the overly soft metal being easily over torqued. Once one pin failed the other failed shortly after resulting in a caliper freely moving along the rotor damaging the wheel and possible warping the rotor. Apparently there is a "known" issue with these steering knuckles I believe they were also put in Dodge dakotas. I'm not entirely sure of the year span they were manufactured and installed. I've been asking around online, Chrysler, and my local dealer and I've been unable to find out of these parts are s till being manufactured the same. The website I did find that had them sent me this "the replacement that we sell will be exactly like the one from factory" which leads me to believe there hasn't been any corrections made and that the new parts could fail just like the old ones.

16 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/05/2009

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, she attempted to make a turn and the vehicle independently wandered out of the lane. The contact was able to regain control of the vehicle and continue driving. The failure recurred whenever the contact was traveling in rainy weather. A certified mechanic inspected the vehicle however, the diagnosis was not provided to the contact. In addition, the transmission failed to shift out of gear properly. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

17 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2008

I was approaching a red light and when I used the brakes my vehicle went over into the right lane, without warning. It didn't swerve or pull, it went!!! there was a vehicle in the right lane and if the driver had not paid attention, I would have hit that vehicle. I had to quickly turn the wheel to the left to regain control of vehicle and consequently ended up running the red light. Luckily, I was not killed at that intersection and the driver in the right lane was not hurt, trying to swerve and get out of my way.

20 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2006

I have a 99 Dodge Durango 4x4 with a 5. 9l engine and I continually have to replace the front tires due to excessive wear from the inside tread. I went to get a front alignment and the establishment told me that I would have to replace all the ball joints and steering rods to be able to do an alignment. These have to be defective since I know people with the same issues that I have. I have not repaired the problem since it is a expensive problem to fix.

21 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2005

Lost total control of steering on an interstate highway going 65 mph. Steering wheel did not control the tires. I am told the steering slip joint contracted . The consequencys of this injury could have resulted in death of myself and family members. Luckly it did not. . I am saving the part if Dodge wants to inspect it. I was never so horrified in my life as I did not have control of my diving situation. I would expect Chrysler to pay for the repair and fix the part /inspect the ball joints .

22 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2004

While applying the brakes a vibration was felt throughout the steering wheel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for analysis.

23 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2003

My 1999 Dodge Durango has a major front end steering problem. We have taken it the dealership for repairs on numerous times. Each time the fix something and then they tell us it needs additional work also. The repairs bill just keep stacking up. I am trying to find out if anything the dealership repairs will be worth my time and money. My Durango can only be driven by me, due to the steering problem as I know what I can and can't do when I am driving. It is a very dangerous problem and I will not let my other family members drive it until it gets fixed. Please let me know what to tell the dealership to do to fix the problem and will this be a factory recall or warranty repair. I know I am not the only one out there that as this severe front end steering problem.

24 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2003

I bought my dod Durango in 99 with 18,000 miles from poway Dodge (san diego, CA). I took it to the dealer in third month after buying it as it was almost about to roll over when turning in a turn. The dealer said this was okay, not to worry. So I kept on driving then it started annoying clicking noise that had been getting worse for over a year but the Dodge in carlsbad had not been able to diagnose it. When I brought it in most recently, they were emphatic that it was my ball joint and that my life had been on the line for months! but no one ever noticed every time I brought it in for diagnosis. The dealer I use to go now sold the dealership in poway and thats why now no one wants to be responsible for it. The clicking noise still continues and is getting worse. It is in the rear of the truck and is described like a gear slipping upon dead stop and start not to mention even slow drive now. They told me they hear clear as a bell but cant diagnose w/o literally taking the entire rear of the truck apart and always tell me that it is safe to drive. I drive it with my kids in it. I would like to file a complaint against Chrysler and against my dealer poway Dodge for negligence.

25 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/18/1999

Poor steering, does not trail or drive without constant correction. Replaced new tires and new alignment. Also found vehicle was out of alignment when purchased from the factory and that it was not uncommon. This is a very hard vehicle to drive. Very poor quality steering. We have mostly purchased Ford in the past and have an old 91 f150 that drives like a dream. We have been very disappointed in this SUV. The SUV is a 4x4 slt. Everything else I have been very happy with. But when you work this hard to drive especially freeway miles or open road, it's too much. We didn't understand it at first, and then thought it was poor tires, and then alignment, finally we replaced everything and it is still poor.

26 Steering problem

There was a popping noise in the front end, the dealer could not duplicate the problem. The consumer was told by a service dealer the steering assembly had excessive play. The consumer noticed on the right side rear upper bushing had torn a rubber grommet. Scc.
