The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Durango. When the vehicle was started and the gear was shifted into reverse, the vehicle shut off and the steering wheel locked. The vehicle was parked and restarted. The steering wheel became unlocked. The failure occurred when the vehicle was both cold and warm and only when the gear was shifted into drive or reverse. The vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer. The powertrain was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 76,000.
Consumer complained about a ball joint problem. Consumer took the vehicle to an independent tire shop to get the tires balanced and aligned and it was determined that ball joints were defective. The vehicle could not be aligned due to the ball joints. The Dodge dealer denied that there was a problem with the ball joints. Finally the dealer found play on one side and wanted to replace both upper ball joints. (the dealer rep stated that they were trained to check them a certain way and they would not have found play the way that they were checking them) the transmission would intermittently not upshift, however the dealer was unable to duplicate.
When the vehicle was started the engine raced and revved. The vehicle was taken tot he dealer who stated that the transmission needed to be replaced.
My vehicle was in park and I had stepped out of the car to get the mail. My vehicle suddenly started driving forward and accelerating all by itself. It ended up running into the side of my home.
