While driving down a smooth paved road approximately 40 mph, the passenger side headrest deployed for no reason. My 13yr old son was sitting in the seat and the headrest hit him in the head causing a headache and possible concussion. I'm submitting this just minutes after the incident and have not had it assessed or repaired. There were no warning lights displayed when this occurred. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request.
The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph when the driver's headrest suddenly detached and exploded from the driver seat. There was no impact to cause the detachment. The contact received injuries to their neck and back area. No medical assistance has been had as of yet. Passenger headrest exploded (popped open) while parked.
I was driving and the headrest deployed without a collision luckily I didn't have my head against the headrest as that would had made the impact harder maybe causing and actual accident. Upon searching online I found out it hasn't only happened to my Durango apparently this has happened to many other vehicle manufactured by Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler with many of these headrest activations taking place while the vehicle was parked. I haven't contacted Dodge since this accident happened today Sunday August 1 2021. As a first responder I think this is a issue that must be addressed now by you guys since I read online that Dodge said it was not a safety concern. Mixing highway speeds with a defective headrest that is supposed to be a "safety feature" to prevent an whiplash effect can result in a motor vehicle accident with major injuries or including death. As this could be the same as your airbags deploying without a collision. A blow to the head could result in a concussion with or without loss of consciousness.
Passenger side headrest exploded open will driving on parking lot, no collision took place it just broke open when plastic part failed internally. It had enough force to injury a persons head or neck.
2014 Dodge Durango incident date 7/22/21 as my wife and daughter were entering the vehicle, the driver's side headrest exploded. There was no accident/collision. The vehicle was parked in our home's driveway, my wife and daughter were simply entering it to go run an errand. Had my wife already been in the vehicle, she would have been struck in the head by the impact. We are now worried that at any moment, the passenger side headrest may explode. This, I feel, is a serious issue.
Driverside headrest popped or deployed on it's own. No crash happened. Vehicle was parked outside my home and not in use. Had I been in the vehicle at the time, potential head trauma could have occurred such as wound, concussion or whiplash. Had I been driving the vehicle when this happened, this could have caused a crash and even more potential harm to myself, my children, passengers and other motorists. The vehicle has not been inspected but I have contact local Dodge dealer who stated that there was no recall on the known issue and that the cost to "assess" the headrest would cost me $140 to diagnose and any replacement costs would be in addition to the $140. There was no warning whatsoever that this could happen. No engine lights or anything. Again, I was not driving the vehicle. It was parked in my driveway.
Out of nowhere, my headrest exploded. Apparently this is some sort of safety feature to avoid whiplash in an accident. My vehicle has never been in an accident and this happened for no reason. It slammed me in the back of the head out of nowhere while driving. I didn't know what happened. I thought I got hit. I see there are many complaints over the years online and yet, Dodge has not taken any responsibly and this isn't listed on the recall list. I'm scared to put my elderly mother in the car in fear that her headrest will explode and cause an injury.
While driving I heard a pop behind me. I realized when I got home that the head rest had broken.
I was getting in the driver seat of my parked car. Prior to getting in I heard a loud thud that sounded like a spring released. The headrest safety feature had deployed. Again the car was parked and not in motion.
We were driving down the road and the back of the passenger head rest exploded open for no apparent reason. I have contacted Chrysler about this but we have a restrictions on vehicle which I need to clear up with state of tennessee but I have notice others complain about their head rest exploding.
Passenger headrest deployed without notice or warning signs as I was parked in a parking lot today 6/27/2021. My son got into the backseat and reached forward to get phone charger and the passenger seat headrest deployed.
Drivers seat head rest activated for no reason. Popped out and forward. Needs to be repaired.

While driving down the road my driving side head rest popped open hitting me in the back of the head.
Head rest spontaneously deployed, no collision or accident. Vehicle stationary in driveway.
I was driving down road and the head rest out of the blue pop open. Scared the heck out of me and I pulled over to find it broken and done this out of nowhere.
March 22 2020 I got into my vehicle drivers side and when I sat down the head rest deployed and knock me on the back of the head. Had not even started the vehicle it was parked in my drive way. I called the local dealer and he tells that there is no recall for the head rest but on line I see other owners have had this problem happen to them but while driving. Crazy! I could not imagine if this had happenned while I was driving. . My vehicle only has 47960 this should not be happening. He's telling me that this will be out ofmy pocket. Huge saftey problem and hope Dodge steps to the plate. I have been a huge Dodge owner my last Durango I owned for 19 years before I bought this one. . I hope I hear from somone soon!!.
The head rest pop open put of no where. Try to explain this to them and no one is willing to help. However after doing my research, I found out I'm not the only one with the problem and that is very common. When I brought this up to their attention I was told that there is not a recall on it so therefore they won't be able to help.
I just pulled out of work and I was driving down the road. My driver seat head rest popped open and hit the back of my head. I didn't hit anything or nothing hit me. I was driving maybe 40mph with no other cars around me. I didn't even realize what happened until I pulled into the parking lot of the store I was going into to. My head rest is still intact just split open!.
The passenger side active head rest come apart, luckily in the driveway. It pushed forward about 3". The plastic that locks around the hinge pin broke. The dealer wants $700. 00 dollars to replace, plus when will the drivers side head rest come apart. Clearly this will be a $1,400. 00 repair when complete.
Second row passenger side bench seat no longer latches to the vehicle. Mechanism is now jammed and will not function. Vehicle seat is free floating and will not latch to the vehicle. Occurred during normal use, as third row passengers were exiting from the vehicle.
The front passenger head rest suddenly and violently popped open while in motion on a straight, smooth, city street without any outside force being applied to it. If anyone had been sitting there, it would have jolted the person's head forward. I worry that this will also happen to the driver's side at some point. This is a safety issue.
While driving down the interstate at 70mph the front passenger side head head rest "deployed" without warning, striking and injuring my wife who required medical treatment to resolve the injury. Inspection of the head rest revealed that the plastic that holds the metal retaining pin for the active head rest system had failed, resulting in the rapid forward movement of the head rest causing injury. Dodge/fca so far is refusing to cover the obvious materials failure and poor design under warranty.
Upon washing my car, the passenger side front seat active headreast activated while sitting in the driveway. No one was in the seat and the car wasnt in motion. There also wasn't any rear impact. Took the car to the dealer been getting the run around if its covered under warranty.
Without warning, the passenger side front seat active head rest deployed without cause or crash. The vehicle was not moving, we were just getting inside. The passenger side head rest tethered to the seat suddenly and unexpectedly deployed causing damage to the head rest. No visible damage is apparent to the vehicle itself (crash), and no visible codes or warning lights (I. E. Airbag light) are displayed. The vehicle has never been in an accident.
