general problems of the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan - part 1

We purchased our 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan 1/2026. Only 85000 miles on it. After about a week or 2, when husband tried go start van to go to work early cold, morning, van wouldn't start easily. Sometimes he would wait up to a few hours and keep trying to start, eventually it would. But last 3 days, its gotten harder to start van. At all. Not cool. Why isn't this recalled, it seems alot of people have same issue. .

The fuel pump would run all night and going down the road the van would cut off. . . Had it checked the tipm was bad.

While driving engine was cutting out, stalling, hard to restart. Found the reason was thr tipm. Found there was a safety recall r09 / NHTSA 15v-115 fuel pump relay, however this was for other fiat Chrysler models and not the Dodge Grand Caravan, please help me understand why? the tipm within this caravan is the same tipm installed is other fiat Chrysler models and clearly the same danger concerns. I don't believe I need to tell the NHTSA how scary it was to be driving 65 on a freeway when this occurred putting my life and others around me in danger of possibly losing control of a vehicle. Then learn this same tipm was part of a large recall, but only on some models and not all. Makes absolutely no sense. I would ask that this prior recall be extended to all models with this tipm installed as I can only imagine how many others have experienced this; god forbid and accidents were caused. After talking to others and researching and reading reports this seems to be another ghost problem: driving around town this issue doesn't usually occur but, on a long drive and coming to a stop or near stop such as a traffic light and/or in traffic my van starts to die. Depending on how long I am going to be stopped or slowed down to a crawl I either have to keep one foot on the brake while accelerating or switch to neutral. When switched to neutral I have to keep a foot on the accelerator while switching back into drive. Sometimes turning the ignition off and back on helps, usually not. The danger is the risk of being rear ended or stalling when pulling into traffic.

I bought the car 2 weeks ago with 105k miles on it. The car has died approximately 20 times in the last 2 weeks while I am driving it. It is so insanely dangerous, you will be going down a busy street and the car completely dies without warning. There is no dash lights on, no warning. The power steering goes. It's an accident waiting to happen, it’s unacceptable. After spending 2k at the mechanic and still the same problem. They have now told me I need the tipm replaced at the dealership. Which also affects the lights, which are erratic, they come on or come off when they want, along with the horn. It’s also pushes the motors into limp mode so it runs really hard over 20 miles an hour even while idle. The car will also die while in idle/park or when you shift gears. The car is basically an all day event to start and if you get it to stay on, if you are able to get it, don’t touch the key or it will automatically the car off. The tipm system will also stay on, even while car is off causing your battery to drain.

Sounds like a machine gun when trying to start. Have to turn key completely off to get the sound to stop. Not starting sometimes and cutting off when driving. Lost all power on a main highway including my brakes and power steering. Completely shut off. Also the back air ac doesn't work at times. Seems to not have enough power to roll down windows at times and you can only use one window at a time. Battery, alternator, and starter test fine. Replaced relays and still same problem. Throwing code for not reaching coolant temp. Replaced thermostat gasket still throwing code. No other codes or lights showing up. Heard of an ignition switch and power train recall but when I put my VIN in it says there are none.

2017 I purchased my car. I had several problems with the key lock and car starting. Immediately tried to return the car but dealer wouldn’t allow it. I have now found out there were 2 recalls in 2017 I was not aware of this until now. Even though Dodge has stated to me they were fixed as a consumer if my car was presenting issues so early on after these recalls I should have had a grace period to give the vehicle back if other issues were presented. Currently car is smoking on the drivers side with a heavy burning smell. Car is over heating as well as the car would not stop while I was driving it on8/23/22 in a mall. Car was shutting off a lot. I was under warantiy and took it to aamco and found out there were transmission issues. My warranty company at the time let my car sitting at aamco despite the major issue and refused to fix it as well as let my warranty expire. Now I am scared to drive this car concerned the vehicle won’t stop.

The tipm has a built in fuel relay switch which fails sometimes won't allow vehicle to start other times it and stall while driving twice in one trip my vehicle stalled on the highway loss of all power and engine completely shuts off with no power steering or brake assist very scary and wreckless was very fortunate to have avoid multiple accidents the is already a recall associated with this issue on the Dodge durango and Jeep cherokee but for some reason the doge Grand Caravan was left off and it posses a huge safety risk for the people and families that are driving them!.

The vehicle engine has stopped running while driving at highway speeds (50-70 mph). I have been able to roll off of the travel portion of the highway, but there was concern with vehicles behind me possibly hitting me. All electrical components continued to operate when this happens, including the radio, lights and ac/heat blowers. It has happened in December 2020, may 2021 (2 times within about 1 hour), July 2021 (2 times within 2 days), December 2021, and April 2022. In all instances the vehicle has restarted in about 30 minutes. An independent repair shop investigated the issue in July 2021 and was not able to find any codes or to reproduce the engine stopping. Several years prior to these instances the vehicle began to "not start" immediately when the key-fob was turned; it starts after tuning the key on and off several times. The vehicle was inspected by a Chrysler dealer and the dealer could find no codes or reproduce the instance.

The tipm has failed. It causes the fuel pump to randomly engage and drain the battery. It drained so low the key fob would not work and I needed a locksmith to get inside the vehicle to pop the hood. Our van has been at lynwood Dodge since February 2022. It took over a month to diagnose and now they can not get the part. The estimate they have given me is around $2,300. That does not count two tows, a locksmith and replacing the fuel pump and a fuel related module around a month prior. The inspection was by the Dodge dealership. To my knowledge no manufacturer representative has checked this vehicle.

The tipm unit is causing issues for my wife and kids there is a recall on other models with the same part that is causing issues why wouldn’t it be a safety issue for this model as well if it can cause the same safety concern.

After many tries, the van wouldn't start. Finally started. Brought it to the mechanic. They said the pressure in the fuel pump would drop 15-20 psi and then raise back to spec. They replaced the fuel pump. Van still wouldn't start. Mechanic tested and found the fuel pump was not getting power from the tipm control module, due to a faulty fuel pump relay. Mechanic said Dodge had issued an external fuel pump relay part due to the issue occurring in many vehicles, however a safety recall had not been issued. Mechanic installed the part and the van starts now. Seems like the fuel pump issue was known by Dodge and should be covered in a safety recall as the tipm control module used is faulty. Instead of a safety recall, Dodge issued an external relay part to fix the faulty part, but then didn't cover the cost of it for its customers.

I was driving and the vehicle stalled out. Could have been hit if someone was right behind me. At first the car would keep turning over trying to start and it would after awhile, then lead to going out to the car and the battery completely drained. I had to replace a whole battery and alternator and it is still draining the battery (fuel pump rely). I don't see why there hasn't been a recall to fix this with as many complaints as there are online.

Engine stalled in the middle of driving down the freeway. This is happening almost daily now, usually when the car is first started. Was accelerating into a turn near oncoming traffic at 20mph when this most recent event happened. This is life endangerment.

Vehicle would start and run then couple minutes later it would just crank and crank with a no start. The after a few minutes it will, with a long crank, it will start. . Once vehicle is running, it runs good until you shut off the vehicle. Then it just cranks and cranks. Sometime battery would die from all the cranking. . Let it set then crank and it starts again. Sometimes it won't start for a day or two. All time it is parked.

I was driving fine with the kids and all of the sudden I feel like my van wants to shut down on me while driving. Went to the park one day and when came back with the kids the car would not start. . . I finally( after several tries) get it to start and got home safe, thankfully. The next day I go grocery shopping and came back, the van would not start! now, I'm frustrated with the kids and groceries out in the hot weather. Finally get it to start and drove home hoping to get there safe. Frustrated thinking cannot afford a mechanic at this time as I recently replaced the water pump and that wasn't cheap. Got home! and the next day it would not start called assistance to figure out what's wrong and explained that it wasn't the battery nor the alternator, there's no code and that it was possibly the tipm and that was going to be about a $1,200 if not more to replace. Explained that grand cherokee and other Dodge car had recalled it but not the Dodge gran caravan.

While driving the vehicle at random speeds. My Dodge caravan will just shut down. I have noticed on a couple occasions all of the dash lights will come and then engine will shut down. Lose of steering and brakes. I have managed a few times shifting to neutral and quickly restarting. An the few times it would not start ive managed to get off the road with steering wheel locked and brake pedal that wont depress. Sit for a minute put in park an restart. This has happen over 18 times of owning the vehicle for a year.

On 1/6/2020 I started my van and noticed it sputtered a little during startup. On my way home, I stopped at a store to pickup a few things. When I tried to start the van again it would not start. I knew it wasn't the battery because the lights and radio still worked. While waiting for a friend to pick me up, I tried to start it again and it started right up. Drove it across the street to o'reillys to have battery tested, just in case. Had to start it again. Wouldn't start again. Waited a minute. Tried again, it sputtered, I gave it some gas and it started. Employee who was assisting heard a whistling noise. Suggesting a vacuum leak. Called my mechanic. Scheduled appt for 1/8/2020. Tried to start it the morning on 1/8/2020. Would not start. Mechanic had it towed to shop. His diagnosis showed tpim module had failed. He said he spoke to parts rep at the lithia Dodge and they said they have 14 vans with same issue waiting for tpim modules and the part is backordered for at least a month. Dodge has not issued a recall yet. I have found blog posts dating back to 2014 with consumers having the same issue and Dodge is not accommodating owners with anything. Cost of tpim module is $994. Labor is $360. I also had to have my flex plate replaced the week prior because it cracked. My mechanic said it was due to weak steal. Service guy at dealership, jason said (on 1/9/2020) said this was not uncommon for this part to have to be replaced on this particular vehicle. This repair cost me $789. 95. I have included photos of the flex plate. I feel like Dodge is simply not taking responsibility for this particular vehicle models failures because they mass produced it and if they had to issue recalls for the flex plate and tpim module, it would cost the company hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. But these vans carry precious cargo, our children!!!.

I have previously reported an issue with my vehicle. The problem has persisted. The issue at hand is the vehicle loses power without warning while driving. It has happened at low speeds (25 mph), middle speeds (45 mph) and high speeds (65-70 mph). All warning lights are disabled when the events occur, so there is no way to warn other vehicles of the issues at hand, increasing the probability of a crash. I have taken my vehicle to cutter Dodge in honolulu only to have been told that the battery cables were loose ($150 service fee) and that the primer that is included with new batteries to apply on the battery posts was something that they'd never seen before. The problem has persisted. I currently have my vehicle at a repair shop with a battery that won't hold a charge because the intergrated power module is malfunctioning. As seen is previous complaints, this issue is ongoing with 2012 Dodge Grand Caravans. This issue presents a significant safety hazard and should be recalled. I will repeat that the driver has no warning that this issue will occur and it puts lives in danger. My vehicle has less than 110,000 miles and it began before reaching 100,000 miles. Recall this part before lives are lost or maimed.

Trouble starting van. Have a $1200 tipm on order. Strongly feel this should be a recall issue as van could stall while driving causing a crash.

My Dodge caravan will shut off while driving. The most common issue I have had is that it will not start properly, but I am terrified that I will be on the freeway and have it die on me. According to my mechanic, the issue is a bad tipm.

Fuel relay switch continuously runs after the vehicle is shut off which drains the battery and prevents it from starting. The vehicle then needs to be jump started by another vehicle and once the original vehicle is running and put into drive to be moved it shuts itself off because the battery is not fully charged.

Fuel relay bypass. When I tried to start my Dodge Grand Caravan which was parked driveway in my driveway it would not start. It was not getting fuel. Eventually it did start. When I tried to start my van in my driveway it would not get fiel to start. This happened several times after this. I found a youtube video that explained the problem. I had to bypass the fuel relay. This is a common problem on the caravan. If I had to replace the icbm it would cost $1200. This item is recalled on other Dodge products and should be on the caravan.

The car wont start. It turns over but wont start. The tipm relay needs replacing.

Saturday 15, 2018 my family and I were driving back from the mall, I was driving at about 55 miles an hour when the vehicle stalled and just died in the middle of the highway without any warnings or signals on the dash. I managed to use the momentum and pulled over to the shoulder, it restarted after 9 times try. Thankfully we were able to make it home. A month before vehicle was parked in driveway and it wouldn't start, towed it to mechanic and replaced alternator. Till now vehicle always stalls when slowing down or coming to stop. This vehicle acts like it have been taken over by supernatural forces and what happened last Saturday was very scary to my family. I have read a lot of the same complaints on this site about this vehicle and it is very upsetting that the maker have not taken responsibility in addressing this safety issue. I wonder how many people will have to die first before they address this safety issue. Let it be clear I will sue, god forbid any happen.

On my 2012 Grand Caravan about two months ago started an issue of intermittent starting or having to depress the accelerator to gt the vehicle to start. Then about a week ago the van completely stop starting and would just turn over unless it was jump started. I have not had the vehicle into a dealer but with reading several online forums on this issue and used a text light to verify power to the m25 20a fuse. I read to use a fuse tap to link an acc fuse to this fuse so when the key is in the on position the pump will run and that is my current setup to have vehicle run.

The tipm is just shot and I've had the altnator replaced the starter and it's definitely tipm related. I don't understand why the recall on this excluded my van, it's been doing this for several months and it's making the vehicle unsafe. Please investigate this situation. (I have 4 kids and two of them have special needs and I need my vehicle to be safe for my kids, and right now it's just a joke and I'm telling you this van is possessed) it's completely unreasonable for the my Dodge to keep burning through everything I've put it in it. Please investigate this, the issue isn't gonna go away and I can't keep burning through parts and further destroying the vehicle. The recall that was issued excluded my van but everything from that recall is happening to my van and has been for several months and Dodge keeps giving me the run around. I've been a Dodge owner my whole life. But Dodge is about to lose a damn good loyal customer because this is beyond ridiculous. Ive been getting the run around from Dodge since the beginning of November of 2018. Please investigate this.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled without warning. Kings Dodge Chrysler Jeep ram (4486 kings water dr, cincinnati, OH 45249, (513) 683-3000) was unable to replicate and diagnose the failure. The contact stated that there was a constant loss of power and reduction in speed. The manufacturer was notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA action number: dp14004 (electrical system). In addition, pertaining to the NHTSA investigation, the contact was uncertain if the failure was related to the tipm, fuel system, and/or engine. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

Faulty tipm , causing all electrical devices to quit working or operate intermittently on there own . Door safety locks to not open and trap occupants inside or not lock when vehical reaches speed. Vehicle no start and leave stranded and wrecker charges!.

I going driving at 70 mph in I-75 tampa florida and the vehicle turn off. Checking in internet the posible problem is overhead in the tipm. I am in this moment in a highway for 3 hours waiting for towning. The vehicle not start.

The integrated control model is making the fuel relay run all night and make the battery die. I have looked online for recalls and there is none. This problem is happening on more Grand Caravan. I have had this problem for all most a year. I can't find the tipm or it cost to most. This need to be recalled.

When the vehicle is in drive but is stationary, everything will turn off. The electrical system goes down and the engine shuts off. After a brief moment (approximately one to two seconds), the electrical system will come back up and all electronic components come back on, but the clock on the radio is reset to 12:00. At this point, we can put the vehicle in park and restart it. This has occurred several times in the past several weeks. The most recent occurrence was 2017. 07. 07 and it did it twice within fifteen minutes. We do not know for sure what is causing this to occur, but it seems to be connected to the main computer and/or the anti-theft system, as this is a complete system shutdown.

Three different times, I took my 2012 Dodge gran caravan to have the engine check because it stalls out. This happens at any speed. Every time all check out ok per the Dodge repair center. Twice the check engine light was on at the time of the engine stalling. Twice no indication. Engine just quit. It happened again last night (08/30/2017) when my wife was coming home on the interstate. She was in traffic and the engine just quit. Big safety issue. Thank god that she was not in an accident. Some thing is wrong with my gran caravan. This problem started early this year (2017). First time to a Dodge facility was on 05/23/17, next on 06/05/17 and on 07/07/17.

The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel line was corroded and causing a leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the repair was not covered under warranty. The approximate failure mileage was 16,000.

My 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan showed a check engine light at 67,000. I checked the code to fnd out p0303 is a engine misfire. Could be ignition, plug, or valve-cylinder compression. I had the engine serviced and the light goes out. The next day the light comes back on. I return the vehicle for service to investigate the check engine light. Further investigation reveals there is a bad compression on cylinder 03. I take the vehicle to Dodge and they could have told me up front that the right cylinder head is not covered under the extended warranty from Chrysler. They take my car into service and find a leak on cylinder 04 also. They gong to replace the left cylinder head but not the right cylinder head with the same identical problem. I am looking at $3500. 00 if I choose to replace the right cylinder head. This extended warranty should cover the defect no matter which cylinder head is defected. My wife loves the car. She wants another one. I told her that because of this issue we would be right back here in 4 years with another 3. 6l v6 pentastar engine. I am torn. Do I trade the issue back to Dodge and get a 4. 0l v6 pentstar. I have almost paid it off. This sux great times flushed down the drain because of a engine defect. I love it but I have leave it. Toyota here I come.
