Accelerator Stuck Problems of Dodge Intrepid

I was driving at approximately 50mph and started slowing down to get on the freeway during rush hour. I had a hard time braking and notice the accelerator was stuck. The car was still accelerating even when I applied the brakes. I had to push as hard as I could on the brakes to get the vehicle to slow down. This incident went on for at least three miles until the accelerator popped back to it's original setting. The same thing has happened in three separate incidents since.

A friend was getting on to the highway when the accelerator stuck and reved the engine all the way. We had just put a new motor in the vehicle so he shut the car off to preserve the motor and lost most of the steering. He hit a wood sign post and coasted down the hill to a gas station. While backing out of the garage the accelerator pedal stuck, causing loss of vehicle control, resulting in vehicle hitting a fuel truck and a tree. Cause unknown. Please give any further details.
