26 problems related to differential unit have been reported for the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact took the vehicle to northwest Jeep Chrysler Dodge ram (10600 sw canyon rd, beaverton, or 97005, (503) 646-5111) to be repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train), but the repair did not remedy the failure. After the repair, while driving at low speeds, there was a loud abnormal noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact also mentioned that fluid was leaking from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed that the rear differential needed to be replaced and that silicone was placed inside it to stop the leak. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 233,538.

2 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2017

Takata recall & rear differential pinion nut I have received two recall notices for this vehicle. The reality is that I live on an island (kodiak, alaska) on which there is no Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/ram dealership. To get the vehicle to such a dealership would require a ferry ride of over 10 hours (each way) and the expenditure of over $500. I called the fca recall assistance center, explained the situation, and asked them to authorize a local non-Dodge dealer or repair shop to do the work. They refused, saying I would have to pay for the repair myself and then seek reimbursement.

3 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2016

I was driving in the far left lane at 65mph on the freeway and all of a sudden without warning, I heard a loud banging noise at the back end of the truck. The back end of my truck was being thrown around causing me to almost lose ntrol of the vehicle nearly causing a bad accident. I pulled over on the left shoulder and the truck came to a screeching stop. I was pretty shaken up. I got out and at first thought I blew a tire. Then looked and the tires were fine ,so then I looked underneath my truck and saw the drives haft came out of the rear differential. I was not in a safe place on the left shoulder, as its in the middle of the freeway. I immediately called for a tow truck. The tow truck couldn't tow as the rear end was completely locked up. The California highway patrol tow truck showed up, and an officer had to shut down a crowded freeway to get me and my truck off the freeway safely. Later in the day I researched and found out about a recall on the 2005 Ram 1500. I contacted the previous owner who was the original owner, and he was never notified of this particular recall. I am in the process of contacting Dodge to see what they are going to do about it. They are responsible for putting safe vehicles on the road. I could have been killed and possibly hurt others. These trucks are not safe unless this issue is fixed. It happens without warning, so if you own one, get it taken care of right away!!!.

6 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

There have been 5 recalls on my Dodge ram. The airbags may rupture in 2015, the rear axle pinion nut may loosen at the differential (powertrain) in 2014, again the airbags inflator may rupture in 2014, the wheel hub assembly (wheels) in 2010, also a recall for the after market replacement pitman arms (steering) in 2010. I have gone to my Chrysler dealer in las cruces, new mexico; the Dodge dealer has been closed for a few years now. I have been told I have to have a notification from Chrysler/Dodge to have them just to take a look at it, much less fix the problems. Now there is a huge recall; this is now really gotten serious. Please help me as much as you can to take care of the malfunctions on my Dodge ram as soon as possible. I have not taken the Dodge on long distance road trips for the past couple of years now. The failed components listed below do not show all the malfunctions I have listed above.

7 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/27/2015

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving approximately 35 mph, a loud whining noise emitted outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and both the rear driver and passenger side wheels seized. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated that the rear differential needed to be replaced. A temporary repair was performed. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train); however, the part needed to perform the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 124,000.

The contact experienced the failure as mentioned in the recall under NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train) however, the part needed was unavailable to perform the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 28,562. Js.

9 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2015

I received a recall notice for a possible differential failure that could cause an accident. I made an appointment at the Dodge dealer in vicksburg michigan. The truck developed a vibration days before the appointment, so I parked it for two days. On the way to the dealership appointment, the vibration worsened and I dared not drive over 45 mph. The dealership informed me that no parts are available to repair my differential. I called the number on my recall notification to talk to a Dodge / Chrysler representative. He informed me that no parts are yet available, and that they could be a week to one year away, as they are searching for some one to manufacture them. The differential plant in detroit was closed shortly after my model year truck. The newer Dodge trucks have differentials manufactured by american axle in mexico. This is so frustrating, I need my truck to drive to work, 30 miles, to american axle in three rivers michigan. I run machines that make differential gears for gm trucks. My truck cannot be repaired or sold at this time. Dodge had no answer on how to get my truck repaired.

10 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2015

At approximately 35 mph my driveline dislodged from my rear differential and locked up the wheels (differential. ). The road was a popular well maintained paved road. Fortunately no cars or pedestrians were close by and speed was relatively low, otherwise this could have ended with serious injury or fatality. In addition to the recent incident with the differential, I have experienced other issues with this ram: -new engine after cracking both heads while driving down the freeway (it gets serviced regularly and doesn't tow often). -idle has sudden surges at a stop. -transmission skipping gears.

11 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2015

Recall p77 my main problem with this is that if the pinion has become loose the gears are not lined up correctly anymore and causes extreme wear on the differential unit and will cause it to lock up. I called the manufacturer regarding this yesterday and they told me to talk to the service manager at my dealership. Today I went in to speak with him. I requested that he check the torque on my pinion nut "I have nobody here that is available to do that today" he stated. I then asked him when he would have somebody in to check it, "maybe Tuesday or Thursday when did you want it checked". "today" I stated. Following that he took down my VIN number went over to the computer came back and told me that there is no remedy for the problem right now and to contact the manufacturer. Which I then advised him that I spoke with them yesterday and they told me to talk to my service manager. He stated that there is nothing he can do to my vehicle without Chrysler providing the proper remedy. If Chrysler does find that the nut is loose are they planning on replacing the ring and pinion since when this item is not properly installed it wears unevenly and can lock up. Chrysler also stated that they cannot verify if I will be reimbursed if I take this to a 3rd party repair shop to have this properly corrected, since the only people that seem to be able to correct this issue is a 3rd party repair shop. I am left with a choice of paying out of pocket for the repair to be assured that I am driving a safe vehicle with no guarantee that I will be compensated for my expenses, waiting for the parts to available and drive a vehicle that may or may not lock up the rear wheels without notice, or having a repair that may not meet your standards since I have not found out what the remedy is if the torque rating is under the specified 200lbs. That is my concern.

The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,995.

14 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

Rear differential locked up causing the truck to spin out and go off the road. I had to put the truck in fwd low to get out of the ditch and drove it a short distance home in fwd high. The rear differential is no longer locked but it is very noisy and can not be driven. When I called Dodge I was told this truck was not part of the massive Ram 1500 recall.

15 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2015

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, the driveshaft separated from the vehicle causing the rear tires to seize. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 169,000.

16 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2014

While traveling around 45mph with children in the car, I noticed a whining noise immediately before I heard the tires chirping as they intermittenly began to lock up. I was able to get to my destination and noticed there was gear lube sprayed all over the underside. The pinion shaft was detached from the rear differential. Truck was completely inoperable, had to be towed by flatbed as rear end was locked. Spent almost $2000 in repairs. Spoke to Dodge 12/21/14 as I'm now reading information that 2005 Dodge rams are being recalled for this exact problem and have been told it is the 2008 model and my truck is "fine". Will be following up with a supervisor.

17 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2014

Rear differential failed.

18 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 55 mph, a loud noise emitted from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the rear differential needed to be rebuilt. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 139,600.

19 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

Shutter and noise from rear end when turning at slow speed usually from stop or slow turn . Have had service done on differential at 15000 mile intervals even though no towing or dusty condition. This does not happen all the time. After reading so many complaints on here about pinion nuts and differential failure thought should I should submit to help start a investigation and recall it seems their is a problem that should be addressed. Whither in part failure or service procedure of differential fluid service.

20 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2013

While driving home from the mayo clinic from a heart dr. Appt. I felt a strange motion in the truck and went to pull over on the interstate when the differential locked up causing the truck to skid to a stop. Had it towed to a Dodge dealer where I could get it repaired . First it was $1700 to put in a junkyard rear, then it was $2350 and $2450 if I wanted a rebuilt . I then received a call it would be another $600 because the brakes locked up with the rear end. The truck was a year past warranty but only had 50000 miles on it. Called Chrysler and they said there was nothing they would do because the garage used napa parts.

21 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2013

I was on kingston pike hwy sitting at a red light in front of a gas station waiting for the light to turn red. When all of a sudden it felt as though someone hit me from the rear end, the motor shut off. The truck was in gear still, so I put in park and looked behind me. I noticed that nobody hit me. I then started the truck up an put in gear at first it did nothing then it moved so turned into the parking lot of the gas station. The truck came to a stop itself, but the motor was still running so I immediately shut it off. When I got out I looked under the truck seeing the drive shat hanging down. I called progressive insurance for a tow. I had it towed to a mechanic shop, who looked at it the next day telling me that the pinion nut had came off and went back into the case. There was damage but that he put another nut on with some locktite, but he did not brake the differential down. I was told that it would need to be done to insure how much damage was done. So I took it to a 4x4 specialist who said he had heard of this before. That I am looking at about $1000 in repairs. I came back home and researched this problem notice several people with the same problem. Along with a recall on 2009 to 2012 year models for the same thing.

22 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Differential failure vibration, clicking bearing/gear mesh sound.

23 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

My rear differential completely locked up. Both tire locked sending me and my kids into the dash and back seat. Bought truck new had only 50k miles but was 2 weeks out of the 7 year warranty. Spoke w Dodge rep towed to nearest dealer they had truck for 1 month, was then told not covered. Originally was told I would pay $1000 & Dodge would cover rest. 11th hr was told no coverage.

24 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2012

I was driving down the road and the lsd rear differential of my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 completely locked up and the drive line separated from the rear differential. The shop that fixed it said that a retaining clip must have come loose and destroyed the entire rear differential. Good thing I was only going about 25 mph in a residential neighborhood and not 75mph on the freeway, or the outcome could have been life threatening.

25 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2012

Differential: over the 90000 miles I have on four occasions I have pulled the differential cover, cleaned the receiver, and replaced lubricant. These are defective parts and as stated in several accidents lead to complete failure and accident potential. This would be a $3000+ repair at a dealer - almost the value of my truck. The rest of my truck would go for another 100,000+ miles. This is the second time I have written your agency. Differentials were defective. I limit use to local driving only. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

26 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 05/22/0201

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v796000 (power train).
