Differential Unit problems of the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500

11 problems related to differential unit have been reported for the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2014

The rear differential went out at approximately 65 mph. I had it inspected and supposedly fixed in April of 2013 but it did not fix it. The complete rear pinion and wheel bearing gears went out. The service people at lithia Dodge in santa fe said that because it had been inspected in April it was ok. Not the case. All of these models need to be recalled for a complete new rear end. Lives will be lost if this isn't done. Also, Chrysler must take financial responsibility for all repairs associated with this rear end even if it was inspected and approved to be ok. It isn't . 2 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2013

Driving on freeway truck started making a humming noise was going 65mph, heard loud bang lost power , luckily could pull to the right shoulder between medium and freeway and access road. Looked underneath truck and noticed oil leak underneath differential and gear shaft. Gear shaft was not attached to powertrain. Called my local dealer he gave me the 1800 number for roadside assistance, instructed me to tell the wrecker to take truck to dealer. Since it was late left truck at dealer.

3 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

Driving down I-10 at speed, when I heard and felt a loud thunk and then multiple impacts from under/behind me. Slowed down to get on the shoulder, then the rear diff locked up and skid the rest of the way to a stop. Looked under truck, found driveline disconnected from differential. Pinion nut appears to have backed off. Nut still in yoke.

4 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while traveling 30 mph, the rear differential seized. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was determined that the pinion nut failed and would need to be replaced. The contact had also received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 13v038000 (power train) that would correct the problem, but the manufacturer stated that they still did not have a remedy fro the recalled failure. The failure and current mileage was 55,100.

5 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number 13v038000 (power train: rear axle pinion nut may loosen at differential). The contact stated that the notice was received over 2 months ago and the parts had not become available for repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The current mileage was 31,000. The contact had not experienced a failure.

6 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/25/2013

Received recall notice Chrysler m34-n08/NHTSA 12v-474 in December 2012, prior to having 100,000 miles on my vechile. Now in late March 2013 (out of warranty-mileage), the rear differential has started making a loud whining noise. The dealership has done a preliminary diagnosis of bearing failure and suggested the rear differential be rebuilt. I have followed all pm's and find it hard to believe that my rear differential is failing at 111,000 miles. Of course the parts for recall are not available and neither Chrysler or the dealership will recognize the subsequent failures of the recalled rear axle pinion nut failing. I need my vehicle for work related purposes and am terrified of driving my vehicle. Chrysler and their Dodge dealerships need to be better prepared for this recall, recognize that the rear axle pinion nut failing can/will cause subsequent failures in a rear differential, and provide adequate repairs to mitigate any future issues with the rear differential.

7 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

I was driving down the highway heard a high pitched whine and the boom the driveline came off the rear differential and the rear wheels locked up. I have researched this and many people have experienced the same problem. Dealer has to replace all components from the center of the truck back.

8 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

While traveling at speed of 15 mph, heard loud bang from rear the truck shook. Vehicle was towed to dealership where they determined the differential broke due to mechanical failure. They did not say anything about transmission. Ordered parts are on back order.

9 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

The contact owns a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, a humming sound emitted from the power train. The contact applied the brakes and the rear differential seized, destroying the power train. The contact had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer was unable to repair the vehicle due to part availability. The contact then traded the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was 34,200.

10 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2012

I have a 2010 ram with 50k miles on it and just got a wake up call. While running with rush hour traffic, I took my foot off the gas, heard a loud whine, then kablam!!! the rear of the truck locked up and kicked me dead sideways, luckily I had just gotten into a gap between traffic. Nothing like having a full size crew cab truck sliding sideways on an interstate in the middle of traffic. I managed to get the truck straightened up and as it was about to slide around the other way I heard the rear end explode and the rear wheels freed up and I got off the side of the road. Kudos to the drivers behind me, cars and the 2 18 wheelers that were able to avoid t boning me as I went on this wonder ride. I climbed out the passenger door and called my dealer, they hooked me up with roadside and an hour later!!! with rush hour traffic just missing my truck by inches, I got to my dealer. They have yet to get it on the rack to look at it. I did crawl under it in the lot. Drive shaft fell off. The pinion apparently came loose, I can see it inside the differential and all the threads are present. The drive shaft is beat all up, you can see where it hung on the frame when the truck went sideways. The front of the dif looks cracked, the pinion is inside the dif wedged against everything. The trans seams to be leaking fluid as well, cracked????? this is a major safety issue!!!! first mine is not the only ram this has happened to. My dealer has had 1 other in for the same issue, and another for no oil in the rear diff. Its just a matter of time before this seriously hurts or kills someone. I have many moons of driving experience under my belt and was able to keep the truck from splattering. Call it skill, luck, whatever, but it could've turned out very badly.

11 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2011

Driving truck at approximately 65 mph to pass another vehicle. Heard a loud, high pitched moaning/whining sound. Truck lost power, pulled over to side of road. Walked around truck to look for cause of problem, saw smoke, smelled burned metal, saw oily sheen on back of truck & on fender. Looked under truck, saw a hole where a plug should have been in rear differential box. Notified Dodge roadside assistance for tow, contacted Dodge/Chrysler customer care to report problem, activate warranty. Truck brought to Dodge dealership who denied warranty, claimed vandalism the cause of the missing plug, not defect. Pursued this with Dodge who continued to deny fault. Only submitting this now because saw an article online about differential failure on Dodge, Jeep products. Due to denial of warranty coverage had to pay over $900 out of pocket and submit claim to insurance company.
