Differential Unit problems of the 2011 Dodge Ram 1500

Three problems related to differential unit have been reported for the 2011 Dodge Ram 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2015

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500. While driving 60 mph, the rear driver side tire locked and the rim caught fire. The contact immediately exited the vehicle and noticed that the rear driver side tire was also on fire. The contact extinguished the fire with water. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the rear differential caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 108,000.

2 Differential Unit problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2014

Operating normally, a grinding noise began and the vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed as a rear differential bearing failure, likely due to the previous recall #NHTSA campaign number: 10v656000 which was done immediately after notification. Significant costs were incurred to repair the differential, axle and bearings. No heavy payloads or towing was done. Maintenance is always done on time and records are available at the dealership. Its seems inconceivable that such a new truck could have a very significant failure.

3 Differential Unit problem

The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 13v038000 (power train:driveline:differential unit) and contacted the manufacturer but was advised that the parts needed to complete the repair were not yet available.
