37 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/13/2009

Fuel injector pump failed just before entering the freeway, was towing stock trailer when I lost all power. Had to have the 1999 Dodge 2500 diesel towed along with the stock trailer, the cost is $3150. 00 for the fuel injector and $124. 00 for towing. I searched the internet and found numerous complaints on this same issue and not only on the 1999 model, so I called Dodge to find out if there was a recall issued, the answer was no! I believe this is a safety issue especially when you loose all power, we were lucky that we had not entered the freeway yet we were still on the on-ramp and it was not safe with the 18-wheelers and other vehicles increasing their speed to enter the freeway. I believe the manufacture should be responsible for the cost not me.

39 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 04/03/2008

Faulty fuel filter system on Dodge diesel trucks. I have a 2006 Dodge 2500 ram diesel truck with 19000 miles on it. I had an issue of it losing power, replaced the filter, then within 3000 miles it happened again. I replaced the filter again, but it still did not help much. I drove to the dealer, and it died within a few hundred yards. Finally got it to the dealer, they had to tow it in. The dealer said it was bad diesel that plugged the fuel injectors and ruined the injection pump. The insurance company sent a lab for tests, they say the fuel is normal. Now I'm stuck with a $10,000. 00 repair bill that should have been under warranty with Dodge. If the fuel is normal, why wouldn't the filter do it's job. I've seen some reports on the internet that some dealers are adding a second filter onto their trucks to prevent this. The service tech said they see this often, but the insurance will usually pay. If they see it often, isn't this a faulty design????.

40 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/15/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving 68 mph the vehicle stalled. He was able to slow down and drive onto the emergency lane. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the diesel injection pump was repaired under the warranty. The failure recurred and the dealer only paid half of the cost to replace the injection pump. The manufacturer was contacted on both incidents and they paid half of the 2nd repair. The failure mileage was 61,000. The current mileage was 94,000.

41 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/05/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving between 50-55 mph, the vehicle loses power and decelerates. The dealer stated that the injection pump timing was failing, which affects the transfer pump. As a result, gasoline is not being pumped; therefore, the vehicle stops and continues to lose power. The current mileage was 78,071 and failure mileage was 75,000. Updated 06/17/08. The fuel injection pump and transfer pump was replaced. Updated 06/16/08.

42 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 02/21/2008

The truck lost power on the on-ramp to a freeway, two days later it died in the middle of the highway and I had to push it off the road. Took it into the shop and it indicated a lift-pump failure. When it was repaired (under warranty - I had to pay the deductible and the computer upgrade fee) the dealership put in what they told me was a "mandatory" retro-kit, moving the lift-pump from the firewall into the fuel tank. If they are making modifications when they repair under warranty shouldn't this be a recall? I noticed that it is a recall for fire-trucks, ambulances and etc. . . So it should be a recall for regular trucks too.

43 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/17/2008

I am concerned with my 2004 Dodge p/u 2500 diesel. On 1/17/08 I had to have my transfer pump (fuel pump) replaced. When it went out I was driving and had no prior warnings that it was going out or was bad. When it went out I was stranded and had to be towed but was luckily in a situation where I could maneuver my truck to the side of the road safely. When I called the dealership later that day to see if they had a chance to diagnose the problem the service guy I talked to said he hadn't looked at it, but was positive it was the fuel pump due to the amount of them they have had to replace. It seems to be very common for this year truck and previous year Dodges to have this problem. The dealerships are very aware of it and are now replacing them with the new style that seem to not have the problems of the pre-2005's. I checked with the dealership to see if my transfer pump had been replaced with the new style pump and was told no that it been replaced with the old style that have all the problems. My truck is still under warranty and I feel that due to the safety issues that could come from your pump going out while driving they should be recalled and replaced with the new style pump whether your under warranty or not. It seems ridiculous that the Dodge dealerships are very aware of the problems of the pre 2005 trucks yet Dodge is not recalling and replacing them with the new ones. Thank you for your time. Jeremy fraijo.

44 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2007 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 10/10/2007

Turbo went out soon after I bought it had about 5000 miles that was under warranty. Always have to regenerate. In June computer crashed in July the clutch goes out now the turbo has gone out again and reading about could be a bad dpf that Dodge knows about. The truck has only 119000 miles I bought it new paid alot of money for it . Not happy lost alot of work and losing more because of turbo issue cant afford aa new one or I would can't afford to keep spending this kind of money on it. Dodge has to know about these problems. They should fix this . Thankyou.

45 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 07/15/2007

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving 60 mph, the engine lost all power. The power steering and brakes completely failed. The vehicle eventually stopped on its own without a crash. The vehicle was towed to the repair shop where it was discovered that the fuel pump and injection pump needed to be replaced. The current and failure mileages were 136,000.

46 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 07/14/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500. While driving at 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed home and the contact replaced the fuel pump. Approximately 2 years later the failure recurred while driving at approximately 75 mph. The vehicle was again towed home and the contact replaced the fuel pump. 47 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 05/06/2007

Driving behind an 18 wheeler on us hwy 67 north of newport, ar. I attempted to pass this vehical. After reaching approx. 2/3 past this vehical I lost all power in my 2000 Dodge 2500 model pick up 24 valve cummins diesel with out any warning from any gauges that there was a problem with the engine. I had to take emergency action not to cause a crash from oncoming traffic. I had my truck towed to a garage to have it repaired. After inspection I was told the fule injector pump had failed as a result on the fule lift pump failing causing insufficent fule pressure to the injector pump. There is no light, gauge or any other device to let the driver know that there is a problem. The only new injector pump is supplied by Dodge at very expensive $3000. 00 range. The only other option is to purchase a remanufactured pump in the $1,500. 00 range. I was told by one remanufacturer they had rebuilt well over 6000 of these pumps. As in my case this should be addressed as a very dangerous sitiuation. There are after market pressure switches to purchase with a warning light to alert someone of an impending problem. I had one installed when I had my truck repaired. Dodge should replace the pump and or re-imburse those who have had this failure or install the simple warning light for those who have not had this happen, yet. There will and may have been deaths because of a simple warning light not being installed at the time of manufacture.

48 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/19/2007

2005 Dodge diesel truck under warranty. One day the truck stalled out. Took it to anniston Lincoln Dodge of anniston al. They had it for 16 days. They called and said the lift pump was the problem and was replaced under warranty. Next they called and said replacing the lift pump did not resolve the problem. Next they said they were stumped and had referred it to Chrysler. Chrysler told them it was contaminated fuel and recommended replacement of the entire fuel system. The dealer gave me a parts list totaling $11,000. Before I committed to a large project like that, I requested that a fuel sample be taken and analyzed. The dealer said they did not do that and did not know where it could be done. The truck still had a fuel priming problem that was not addressed. They said if the fuel system was going to be replaced anyway; the priming problem would be repaired. They charged me $1700. 00 for their efforts. I decided to take the truck to bill stafford pontiac-Cadillac-GMC of talladega al. This was the dealership where I had purchased the truck. They had the truck for 17 days. An $11,000 repair warranted a second opinion to at least confirm the path forward on the repair. I also requested a fuel sample be taken, but they also said that they did not do that and did not know where fuel could be analyzed. Bill stafford had the truck for 17 days. During this time, they eliminated fuel contamination as the problem. Their diagnosis was that there was a fuel priming problem. They then informed me they did not have the tools for repair or further diagnosis I was welcome to come and tow my truck someplace else. They did not charge me anything for their efforts. Next I took it to miller-sutherlin automall of pell city, al. The truck was at this dealer for 10 days and they called me to come and get my truck because I was wasting their time. It already had a star case #9258138 (a result from the first repair attempt) for contaminated fuel.

49 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

2005 Dodge 2500 diesel. Starting at aprox. 27,000 miles, the truck began to idle roughly and was increasingly harder to start. At about 30k miles, the truck was taken to the dealership for repair. After about a week, the dealership informed us that the fuel was not diesel in the truck, and they did not know what it was. In fact it was diesel from our very own tank, and our fuel salesman told them it was ulsd, with a mountain dew appearance for highway. The dealer removed the fuel from the truck and replaced it with their own, only to then tell us we ruined the entire fuel system, which would need to be replaced at a cost of @ $14,000. Then they added that we had voided the vehicle warranty from contamination. We took the truck directly to cummins, who diagnosed 2 faulty injectors and replaced them at a cost of @$1700. The truck ran fine for 3 years, then same trouble again, took it back to Dodge at our mechanics request, and got the same total replacement scenario. Went back to cummins yesterday, where they service tech told me 1. Dodge buys the engines from cummins just above cost, and carries the entire warranty, 2. Dodge locked cummins out of the engines through programming and different plug connector 3. He had many people with the same experience as we did, turning the problem back on the owner and refusing service. He said in fact he did not know of Dodge honoring engine warrantees at all, and it was a sore issue for cummins reputation. Cummins sent us to a third party, were the truck is now. While talking to Dodge corporate the first time around, they told me they count on their dealers to be the "eyes and ears" of the company and leave it to them to decide warranties. It is not right to void over a faulty component, one which the dealer could not even diagnose. If I took it to a regular mechanic for a spark plug and they told me I needed a new engine, that would show extreme negligence.

50 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 11/09/2006

I was driving on interstate 20 in a 2004 Dodge 2500 diesel pickup at 70 mph when, as I found out later, the lift pump went out leaving me with no power and no warning, with the truck immediately slowing with loss of power steering. I was in the left lane passing a line of trucks at the time with a line of traffic behind me. One of the trucks that I was passing saw the trouble, slowed and allowed me to cut through to the right shoulder, avoiding an accident. I later found out from dealership personnel that this part has a history of going out and that the factory will not allow the part to be replaced but requires a retro fit of a different system to solve the problem. There was no notification of the problem from Dodge warning of this possibility. They will not even acknowledge that this part is a problem even though they will not allow dealerships to replace it. It would appear that someone will have to die to get anything done. If this continues to happen , with no warning, I feel certain that someone surely will. If this part has this type of failure, that appears to be well known to them, then it should be recalled and fitted with the retrofit.

51 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 10/29/2006

I own a 2004 Dodge 2500 with cummins engine and it stalled and would not restart. Dealership said the diesel fuel transfer pump went bad which they said was a very common problem. Service department said it was a design flaw and have to put a kit on it to fix the problem (totally relocate the fuel transfer pump from the engine to the fuel tank). Also said it was a possibility that it ruined the injector pump because it was not receiving fuel from the transfer pump. This is a very common problem and service departments admit it and is widely documented on the internet, why has a recall not been issued.

52 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 10/25/2006

2001 Dodge Ram 2500 injection and transfer pump was replaced. At the time of repair the technician did not install the retrofit transfer pump, instead he put in a cheaper pump. At the time the mileage was 47810. A little over a year later the led light for the fuel pressure illuminated. The transfer pump had failed again. The vehicle warranty and the part warranty both had expired therefore the manufacturer would not cover the cost of repairs.

53 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 08/04/2006

: the contact stated the vehicles transfer fuel pump in the engine quit while driving 35 mph. The service dealer replaced the fuel system with a different fuel system due to the manufactured fuel systems consistent failure which they stated usually happened anywhere from 35000 to 60000 miles.

54 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 07/12/2006

Loss of power while entering high speed traffic, causing high speed traffic to take evasive actions to prevent collisions. Failure of transfer pump causing failure of injection pump on numberous occasions, this should be recalled at the time of the last repair their was no replacement for transfer pump available, so an after market electric pump with proper flow rate amd pressure was installed and has been in service for over 1 year. The injection pump still flags as bad and has loss of power until engine is at full running temperture and will eventually need to be replaced.

55 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

On 6/30/06 we were driving our Dodge 1999 Ram 2500 diesel pickup, when it suddenly stopped running. My husband was able to force the pickup across traffic and to the side of the road. The pickup had to be towed to a Dodge dealership. We now find out that Dodge diesels have a problem with its fuel transfer pumps which cause the primary injection pump to fail suddenly and without any warning. This places the occupants at risk since your vehicle has no power, no power steering and no power brakes. Our vehicle is awaiting repair at the dealership, estimated at $3,000- $4,000. Dodge recognizes that they have a problem with their pumps, since they have a retrofit marketed and in stock at the dealership but they refuse to do a recall. Although our vehicle has low mileage, our time of ownership disallows us from warranty work. Dodge won't even speak to us. This is a problem that can put drivers at great jeopardy. But Dodge will not address it other than at the owner's expense.

56 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 05/30/2006

The vehicle, a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 24 valve turbo cummins 5. 7 liter diesel pickup truck, suddenly stalled and the engine shut down completely while the vehicle was in motion on a state highway traveling at approximately 65 mph. The vehicle, which has power steering and power brakes was difficult and dangerous to stop. Ultimately the vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was determined that a fuel lift pump and primary injection pump failed. The primary injection pump, a bosch mod. Vp44, relies on fuel for lubrication. The fuel lift pump, which is placed forward of the fuel tank several feet, is poorly designed. The design requires to pump to both suck and pump, ultimately overworking itself. In a very short time, the pump becomes over-stressed and fails. Failure of the fuel lift pump causes immediate loss of lubrication to the primary injection pump, destroying the unit. The vehicle was ultimately repaired at the dealership with parts purchased independently. The dealership quoted a bosch factory remanufactured replacement pump at $2,600. A replacement bosch vp44 pump, remanufactured by the bosch factory, was purchased from a local diesel specialty store for $1,100, more than $1,500 less than if purchased from the dealer. A new lift pump was installed and the new injection pump was installed for a total cost of $2,300, before towing, which was an additional $250. In speaking a technician at the local diesel shop, he indicated that cummins and Dodge have since changed the position of the lift pump in the new model trucks, but that the problem is persistent in model years 1998-2002. Individuals truck owners have found a work-around that eliminates the problem. That work around is to place the fuel lift pump either in the fuel tank, or, next to and below the fuel tank. This work around, while not acknowledged by Dodge, was also suggested by the Dodge mechanics at the dealership. They acknowledged that the placement of the fuel lift pump is a problem.

57 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/30/2006

: the contact stated while the vehicle is parked on an incline and there is less than one third tank of fuel, the vehicle will not restart. The dealership determined this was how the vehicle was manufactured.

58 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/09/2006

Have a 2005 Dodge cummins, and a 2006 Dodge cummins. They were built with an upgraded injection system, that has a one micron injector. . After a short time the injectors become plugged the computer system reacts by sometimes decelerating and other times the engine tries to run away or accelerate without your foot on the pedal, the times that happened was fortunately at a light with engine idling. This has happened to both the 2005 and 2006 trucks repaired by Dodge no warranty repair at great cost they say bad fuel that is their standard line, met a guy yesterday who had 2004 his did this eleven times, bad fuel bad fuel he said all his friend were buying diesel at the same place, no problem. I own five Dodge cummins pickups have never had this problem before they upgraded their injection system. . . .

59 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1996 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 11/07/2005

Contact stated he had a fuel leak. He also checked the vehicle and found that the throttle cable was breaking, 6 out of 7 strands were broken. There is no recall on this vehicle. The vehicle is parked at this time. Repairs have been made to the vehicle. Updated 11/7/2005. While searching for a new throttle cable the consumer discovered that the cable in his vehicle was of the type involved in a recall. The consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN.

Towing a 6000 lbs trailer up hill when fuel injection pump stalled caused truck to stop. Word is that its not a recall, but should be. Happens a to a lot of Dodge trucks. Luckily there was a shoulder to pull off to. Lucky us we were not going down hill!!!.

61 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 06/06/2005

Dodge diesel pickup 2000 fuel injector pump failure in 2/2004, now 6/2005 fuel injector has failed again, Dodge refuses to replace, we found out these are going bad about every 15000 to 20000 miles on all year models 2000,2001,2002 admitted by dealerships and mechanics alike.

62 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 05/12/2005

I recently experienced this while I driving with trailer in tow and had loss of power. Being followed by traffic I was unable to accelerate up the hill. I have also experienced problems when turning into traffic the loss of power and unable to accelerate has caused other drivers to perform drastic braking and maneuvering to avoid collisions. What happens is the engine does not respond to the fuel pedal input. I have checked the codes on the Dodge Ram 2500 equipped with the 5. 9l cummins turbo diesel and have found a p0216 code indicating the bosch vp44 injection pump is not communicating with the ecm. There appears to be a defect in the vp44 computer talking with the ecm. This was not the first time the "dead pedal" issue occurred. This first started around 36000 miles after a long highway trip coming to a stop after which the engine stayed at idle and would not accelerate. Currently it has become more consistent. I have noticed that this occurs when the weather changes drastically or the engine has been worked and is hot. I am starting to believe that the computer mounted on the vp44 is losing connectivity due to the computers susceptibility to extreme temperatures. I have researched failures concerning the vp44 and have noted that on the cummins isb engine there have been many failures of this integral engine component. This engine is found in many other applications such as school buses, RV's, and light duty truck applications. After researching the multiple failures the majority of the fixes for this issue has been to replace the vp44 injection pump. I would encourage the NHTSA to investigate said issues and take appropriate action to remedy the faulty equipment on this engine. This is a significant safety concern which needs to be resolved due the engines applications in school buses, RV's and light duty trucks. -regards chad mckinney.

64 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2000 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 03/18/2005

Lift pump failed on my 2000 Dodge ram 5. 9 cummins engine only 1500 miles after the warranty lapsed (happened at 101,500). Since the timeframe was so close, would like to see if I can recoup some $$$ for the parts, I mean c'mon, $2800 (less $800 core charge) for this part, and so close to after the warranty expired ? have talked to other owners of trucks like mine, via the internet, in person etc. , and was referred to this site. Is there or has there been any attempts made to recall this part ? anyway, lucky for me, it failed less than 2 miles from home, but what if I had been on a trip hundreds of miles from home, or right in the middle of freeway traffic ? thanks for reading, will be more than happy to reply to any further correspondence.

65 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/17/2005

Driving n. W. On a 4 lane road, my truck suddenly had no acceleration, I pulled into the median. I found out my fuel transfer pump had failed, causing the fuel injector pump to also fail because of lack of fuel. I found out the hard way that there is an after market sensor that could have prevented the damage done to the fuel injector pump. Cost to consumer: $340. 00 for a fuel transfer pump and $1,590. 62 for the fuel injector pump. Cost of the sensor $60. 00. Shame on Chrysler! my 1999 Dodge ram 24 value diesel had 94,891 miles but the warranty was out in years.

66 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1999 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 01/10/2005

Fuel injector pump stopped working and from all of information I found it seemed to me it should have been a recall. We had a accident in 2005 from the stalling of the pump, and was told by the body shop it was the cause of the wreck. We have spent money on sensors trying to repair to finally be told that the vp-44 code was the fuel injector pump, and will need to be replace and that certain companies have made a special part to repair this and could prevent this from happening. Why can't Dodge repair? does it take someone to die just to get something repair right, which should have been done during the making of the product?.

67 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 10/12/2004

(2) vp44 fuel injection pump failures, (1) fuel lift pump failure: at approximately 56,000 miles of service, the first vp44 fuel injection pump failed (documented Chrysler p216 code was loaded into the pecm), again at approximately 78,000 miles, the vp44 fuel injection pump again failed, as did the diesel fuel lift pump. The vehicle was repaired by the dealer(s). This mechanical defect is consistent throughout the industry, and the cost of repairs at the Chrysler dealership is more than $3,000. 00 per incident for a total of more than $6,000. 00 in accrued costs if I were to pay for this out of pocket. My concern is that when the warranty period is over, the reliability of the vehicle will be the same: another and then anther fuel injection pump will need to be replaced. Note: incident dates below are approximate but can be authenticated and corrected if needed.

68 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2003 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/30/2004

2003 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel p0148 fuel delivery code appeared on my truck for 30000, and I have 59000. Until now the truck ran okay, now it has slow acceleration, and will stop accelerating at certain speed. It also doesn't provide enough power to tow my business trailers and trailers that I have. Trained mechanics from Dodge can't figure it out. I'm glad these people don't work on the planes I work on.

69 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 09/17/2004

On 1998. 5 - 2002 Dodge ram pick up with the 5. 9 cummins diesel there is a real problem with vp-44 injection pump failures. Several vp re builders lay the problem to heat failure & vibration due to solder joints crystallizing. These pumps are not cheap & the problem was so bad that fed x forced bosch the manufacture of these pumps to do something about it. Not everyone has the money to replace one of these pumps. You never know when one of these pumps are going to fail. If you are on the highway or in an intersection & it would fail tat then becomes a traffic hazard. I had on go bad 9/17/2004 & now I have another going bad now. They cost around $2500. 00 to $3000. 00 to replace.

70 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2001 Dodge Ram 2500

Failure Date: 05/01/2004

With aprox. 89,000 miles on the truck I experienced loss of power during normal operations. Replacement of the fuel filter fixed the problem for a short periods of time. Thought the problem was bad fuel. As it turned out it was my transfer pump getting weak. This inturn, due to low juel pressure, caused my fuel injection pump to eventuly fail. I had to have this repaired in may of 2005. From what I have been told by the repair shop this is an inherit problem with the cummings. I have spoken with other cummings diesel owners and they have told me of the same problems. Dodge most be aware of this problem. This is a very expensive repair, $2100 between the two pumps and that is with me replacing the transfer pump myself. There should have been a low fuel pressure inticator install in these trucks at the factory. They are avalible in the aftermarket. I have also had front ball joint problems with this truck. These joints are maintance free jionts that fail, I believe due to the added weight of the cummings motor. This is also an expensive repair because you most replace the entire control arm assemble, not just te ball joint.
