Tire Sidewall problems of the 2003 Dodge Ram 3500

Nine problems related to tire sidewall have been reported for the 2003 Dodge Ram 3500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

Goodyear tire, wrangler sr/a, lt235/80r17e, manufacturer 1503, bsw. Tire sidewall has extreme cracks on both sidewalls for a distance of 1 1/2 inches up from the rim of the tire, this problem is known as the" goodyear smile". The tires(7), are mounted on my 2003 Dodge ram p/u (drw) 3500 as oem tires. This cracking is so extreme that I can actually push my finger nail into the cracks by about 2/16th's of an inch. Goodyear tire store dealers have told me that this is an ozone defect and not a material defect, this truck has been garaged all its life when not in use. I have observed many other trucks with the same problem manufactured by the same company. In fact, the (5) goodyear tires lt235/85r16e that were installed as oem tires on my 2004 hitchhiker (nuwa) 5th wheel trailer were replaced by goodyear for cracking between the ribs length ways. I still have 7/32nds of tire tread left on these tires. The cracking is a manufacturing defect and they do have to be replaced before I can tow my trailer again as I am afraid that one or more of them will blow while on the road.

2 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2007

The contact owns a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500. The vehicle has goodyear wrangler sra, size lt23580r17 tires. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the back dulley tires were flat. The mechanic stated that the inside wall was deteriorating. There was no visible outside damage. The failure mileage was 29,000 and current mileage was 70,000. Updated 12/12/2007 updated 12/12/07.

3 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2007

I would like to report a problem with goodyear tires. My vehicle is equipped with goodyear wrangler lt235/80r17 all terrain tires. My tire dealer indicates that these tires are less than 4 years old based on the manufacturers code date, yet all 6 tires have splits in the side wall due to "rotting" according to my tire dealer. Some of these splits are very deep, up to 1/2" wide and 4" long. I have never had this kind of problem with any other brand of tire. The vehicle is driven every day, and I care for the tires by maintaining proper inflation and doing regular rotations. If I'm not the only one having this problem this could become a serious situation, for had I not followed proper tire maintenance procedures on my truck, I would have never been aware of the impending tire failures, as the deep cracks were all located on the inside of the tire out of normal view.

4 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2007

Blow out front tire, goodyear load range e on 2003 Dodge Ram 3500, later inspection found 3 other tires oem large cracks (q tip size) 10 inches long on tires with much tread left crack is only on inside so difficult to see when tires are inspected. Good year and Dodge should have notified me before blow out, but both are silent !!!.

5 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2005

I drive a 2003 Dodge 3500 drw and pull a 5th wheel once a month. Tires are goodyear, wrangler sra, size: lt235/80r17 load rate e. I noticed an open crack on the sidewall of my front left tire and took my truck into a goodyear service center to have it checked out. They inspected it and said that all 6 tires should be replaced because of showing signs of cracking (on the sidewalls). To me this is an unsafe problem and I expected goodyear to replace them. No, I have to purchase new tires (they are prorating the bad ones). The tires had to be found in two different states because they did not have them in stock. I asked the service person if they see this a lot. His answer was he has seen it before. I contacted goodyear consumer relations and got the same answer. I checked the internet and these tires have a problem with the sidewalls. Should be recalled and replaced with known quality tires. No incident occurred, saw problem before hand.

6 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2005

All four outside tires have splits in the side walls.

7 Tire Sidewall problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2005

4th tire failure, goodyear lt235?80r17 several side wall tire splits, both outer surfaces of tire. Tire had 10/32 of 15/32 tread remaining, this tire is one already replaced by goodyear. The casing is at west tire svc, 4000 hwy 281 north, marble falls ,tx78654, phone 830/693-0475, fax: 830/693-0602. Would be nice if you impounded tis tire for examination and fact finding before they ship it away. There was no accident or curb bounce involved, just a faulty tire and it's interesting to note that all my driving on michelin tires never had a mess like this one and my driving style has not changed.

8 Tire Sidewall problem

The tires had an ongoing failure with deep torque cracks around the sidewall. This could result in a blow out while driving. The original tires were replaced at 15,000 miles, the second replacement tires were at 20,0000 miles. Currently, third replacement involved all tires for the same failure.
