2 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2004 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

I have a 2004 Dodge Stratus that I recently was having rough idle and ended up stalling on me. The problem started several months ago and I had a tune up done on the car and the spark plugs where replaced. I then continued to have issues and the independent shop replaced the ignition wires. They said the computer was not giving a code however they could monitor the system and see a misfire on cylinder one. They changed the wire on 1 to 3 and 3 to 1 and then the same behavior occurred on cylinder 3. I had the car for about 3 days and after staring it up and letting it warm up on a cold winter morning I would hear it running rough. The car sounded like it could stall and the engine light started flashing. I took it back to the independent dealer and they could not duplicate the problem. I asked them about a TSB I found that was related with flashing the pcm and related with cold starts. I had the pcm flashed at a Dodge/Chrysler dealer who said they never heard of the issue and did not think the pcm needed updated. They said they hooked up the computer and found that it did need to be updated. I have been running the car for about 1 month and so far no issues. I believe their is a know problem with the 2004 Dodge Stratus and the original pcm code causing the car to run rough and cause the engine light to turn on.

3 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2001 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

My husband was driving home from work one morning when 2001 2. 7l v-6 started to chug, engine light came on and the car died immediately. My husband had to push to side of road. We had it towed later that morning to my parents' house. Engine is blown out. I've done some research and these engines are expensive to fix we have always done our maintenance and never had any warnings signs before hand. Chrysler needs to step up because we pay money for their product and nothing is holding. Is that all we get out of our cars is 75,000- 100,000 then nobody should by cars. This is a serious situation and Chrysler needs to recall or make it right by owner. We did do our repairs and maintenance and now we should have to basically throw the car out. It is expensive to fix. Help us because someone may get injured with these kind of mishaps.

5 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2001 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 07/28/2006

I bought this car brand new. . . Drove it off the lot feeling confident and now 5 years later there is barely any paint on it and I can't keep the check engine light off. The clear coat started cracking early of 2003. When I asked the dealer about the paint situation they asked me how many miles were on my car and then said they couldn't do anything. My question is what does the milage have to do with the paint job???? also the check engine light randomly comes on. I have needed some normal maintenance on my car but this last time, earlier this year I took it in for the light. They said it was nothing, charged me $100 and then sent me on my way only for the thing to come right back on the next day. This is all very discouraging because this vehicle is not even paid off yet.

Check engine ligh came on 12/15/04 @ 36,355 miles. Took to local Chevrolet dealer about engine noise. They said they can see sludge buildup on oil cap. 13 Check Engine Light On problem of the 1996 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 09/05/1999

We were driving on I-69 in tulsa, ok on September 5, 1999, travelling about 75 mph in the left lane of traffic when the car suddenly and without warning downshifted into second gear. Fortunately, the traffic was light on the highway and we were able to get off without incident. At that time, we had no idea what it had done and were perplexed - was it the transmission? tire blow out? the car continued to run however but would not let us shift out of second gear. We read our owner's manual and learned that what happened was a "safety feature" when the computer detects something wrong, the car will automatically "downshift" so no additional damage, etc. Will be caused! we also noted to shut off the car and restart it and it would re-set but hte check engine light would stay on. We took it first to the dealership the next business day (Tuesday) and they started mumbling about the transmission needing replaced without even a diagnostic check! we then took it to tuneup masters who did a check and found no codes, nothing wrong. Another year has passed and my check engine light came on again but not while travelling at high speed. A code was noted this time for the transmission. I am getting rid of this car. Bad things are getting ready to happen and I can't afford it. My concern, however, is this "safety feature" of downshifting at high speeds. I will not sell it privately as I am concerned a family will buy it and something awful may happen. I know, "buyer beware" but it seems dangerous to me. I just wondered if anyone else has encountered this problem with the computer and/or engine? I have kept up on my oil changes, etc. , new brakes, new tires, but it just seems to do this randomly and without warning and then the car runs fine after it is re-set. Thank you for your attention to this report.
