I noticed oil on the outside of engine. I brought our car to downtown tire in hastings, mn where they told me that there was a headgasket leak. The mechanic also told me that he has heard about and seen a lot of problems with the Dodge Stratus and headgaskets. Told us to take it to the Dodge dealer and have it fixed. Ron becker, inc told us that there really wasn't any problems with headgaskets but they would check our car out. They then called us to say it was definetly the head gasket it cost me $99 for the parts and $552. 50 for labor. I have been checking the internet and have found out that there has been a number of head gasket leaks and would like something done or compensation.

56 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1997 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 10/01/1999

Head gasket leaking oil at rate of 1 quart per 3,000 miles. Daimlerchrysler contacted but kept details regarding scope of failures a secret. They offered to split repair costs 50-50 with me (my portion to exceed $300). Contacted a number of dealers and independent repair facilities, all of which confirmed large numbers of head gasket failures across several model and engine lines. After seeing the number of complaints on this same subject on this site, I have to believe it is a major defect in either gasket design or material and warrants a recall to repair at no cost to the original owner. Vehicle costs too much ($20,000) to allow this type of a failure to continue. I currently own 2 Chrysler built vehicles, but will not buy another daimlerchrysler product, ever.

59 Engine Head Gasket Leaking problem of the 1996 Dodge Stratus

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

We contacted Chrysler last month regarding the leaking engine head gasket on our 1996 Dodge Stratus with 57003 miles. We were told there were no problems reported about leaking head gaskets. But, take it to a dealership and they may or may not cover the replacement. The dealership told us it would cost $100 or so to just check it out. Even though they knew it was the head gasket. Because of our finanicial status, we chose to apply the $100 to our mechanic to actually fix the problem. It took the mehcanic 3 weeks to get the part because it was on back order. Imagine that, no problems reported and still the part was on back order. It took 3 days to fix. Our mechanic told us that he talked to another mechanic at the Chrysler dealership. He said they were replacing about 2 a week. Also that Chrysler was paying for either all of it or parts. I called Chrysler back and tried to talk with them. I even got more irate than I should have. They told me they would not help us because we chose not to get it fixed at the dealership. This leaky head gasket was not a recall. Were we required to pay an extra $100 just so they could say "yes" it is the head gasket in order for them to then say "no" we are not covering it? understand my position, all I want reembursed for is the head gasket itself which was $136. 30. Because it was not a recall, why couldn't I take it to my mechanic? my mechanic charges $24/hr labor compared to the $54/hr the dealership charges. Does it matter who installs it when it is not a recall? also, my mechanic said the replacement part was the same identical one that was taken out. In conclusion, why should I be penalized for saving extra money when it is chrsyler fault for the defected part? all I ask for is the price of the head gasket $136. 30. Thank you.

Informed of head gasket leaking oil while it was in for one of the many recalls on this car. At the time the oil leak was not noticeable under the car, but since then has become increasingly worse. This could easily cause a fire on my car as well as any of the numerous other cars I have read complaints about. If this problem is as wide spread as number of complaints indicate the manufacturer should be responsible for this problem and not me.
