My wife drove about 25 minutes to a flea market. Bystanders there told her that there was smoke coming out from under the vehicle. When she stopped, they told her that her vehicle is on fire and to get out. She immediately got her children out. A man there popped the hood and saw that the engine compartment was on fire. The vehicle was totaled. The vehicle ran fine the day before.
It all began when we purchased a brand new 1996 Dodge Stratus in oct 1995. The car gave us little if any trouble the first year. The second year and every year since it has been a#1 headache. The second year alone the car was in the shop 17 times. The repairs were major ones as well as minor ones including replacement of air compressor on air conditioner, starter, replacement of head gasket twice once at 11565 miles second at 20495 miles and guess what now at 69000 miles. Thank goodness the first two were covered under warranty. I filed a complaint within the warranty period with the dealership, the attorney general as well as good old Chrysler. I was told by Chrysler I could always buy an extended warranty anfd they would open a complaint file on me so that if any of the same problems occured, I could contact them. Well I have contacted them but they say they can't do anything. Talk about customer service huh!!!!!
I am not willing to accept that answer. I think Chrysler has to admit there is a problem and correct this at no cost. There are too many people having the same problem I am.

Informed that head gaskekt was blown, extended warranty expired by 14 miles. Suspect inaccurate odometer reading . I noticed my odometer increase amount when driving oddly this occurred right arouned my warraty experation. Possibly suspect odometer tampering. Everything seemed to go wrong with this car. I am just glad nothing major happened while mytwo-yr old was present in the car. I was told I had a crack in the head cylinder when I bought the car. This is not a car I would recommend anyone should buy !.
When we bought this car, 1999, the head gasket was supposively fixed by robert hutsons, now 2 years it has done it again, and robert hutsons, and Chrysler said because of miles they aren't responsible for fixing this again.
Consumer noticed a little leak. Consumer took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was engine head gasket.
Check oil light alerted me to a problem which was confirmed by a licensed mechanic. The problem is a blown head gasket. While car was in the shop, mechanics suggested I look for a recall. None at the present time. Talked to Dodge dealer. Was told that since I had over 75000 miles and a non-Dodge mechanic was repairing the problem, there was nothing they could do. It has become obvious that this is a growing problem. This should be addressed as a recall. I caught it early. Dodge should step up and fix the problem, regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle. Some poeple properly maintain their vehicles.
I have talked to other Stratus/breeze owners and they told me to expect the leak because crysler was having problems with their gaskets. At the time I didn't have a problem, but sure enough, it's starting to leak alot!.
There have been 5 technical service bulletins issued in regard to the head gasket on this vehicle. I feel that it is a problem that Chrysler has been aware of since manufacturing it, and they should have extended the warranty to cover this part. I had not driven the car for 36 months yet but my mileage was over the 36,000 limit, I feel I should be reimbursed the $412. 71 I was charged as this has been a problem with this vehicle.
Consumer has to put a quart of oil a day. Seal isn't holding fluid. Dealer has really explained too much of problem or what cause was.
I am also told that I have a bad head gasket and I dont know if the recall for it was done on the vehicle. How do I check to make sure I'm not being lied to. The recall I beleive for an oil plug.
Seal of engine cylinder head is not sealed properly causing gasoline to leak all over road. Dealership is aware of problem. Dealership will not fix due to out of warranty.
Head gasket on the vehicle has failed. Upon research of this issue , I find more people with the same problem. One person had it replaced 4 timess. The company won't recall it . This is unexceptable . A high percentage of these vehicles have this failure at the 50,000 mile mark. Why is there not a recall. Oil and heat. . . . Fire!.
The valve cover gasket has developed a severe leak. My research indicates that a number of other vehicle owners have reported this problem as well.
I have only had this car for one year and I cannot believe that for a 1996 Dodge Stratus I have already had a head gasket ($600. 00) and a transmission replaced. Need help with any recalls on these. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
