One problem related to transmission gear slipping has been reported for the 1996 Ford Contour. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving gear would slip from drive into neutral with no warning. The engine would rev then pop back into (automatic) gear. Would start shifting into drive or reverse until foot is pressing accelerator. Then shifts into neutral. Its happens intermittently. Will be taking vehicle to dealer.
