Exterior Lighting Problems of Ford Contour

I had just got on interstate when my car started cutting out. I immediately put my flashers on & tried to get in the left lane so I could get on shoulder of interstate but cars would not allow me to get over. My car died in middle of interstate. I called ASAP (a service in alabama for help on the interstate) & told them where I was & I needed them to bring me some gas. Then a car came flying up behind me but was able to stop & did not hit me. Then the car behind him had stopped but a truck behind her was not able to stop. He hit her, she hit the man behind me and he hit me. Paramedics were called for a 4 year old in the womans car who said his head hurt. I could have been killed if the car behind me had hit me and turned my car sideways & was hit on the side by another car, because everyone was driving way too fast and did not acknowledge my flashers at all. They would fly past me blowing their horns. Did they think I was stopped on purpose? believe me if I could have made the car go I would have. This car does this sometimes when on a 1/4 tank of gas, and since this accident it has gotten worse. Now it does it on 3/4 tank. I do not get on interstate anymore. No one seems to be able to find out why these cars do this.

While driving 25mph interior light dropped out, causing loss of control.

Dash was replaced, but it was installed improperly. Also, air conditioning system has leak, and will be replaced next spring. Vehicle has had the following repairs or replacements: wheel bearings, brakes, tie rods, dashboard, intake manifold, passenger rear struts, left front dome lamp switch, left front speakers, and oygen sensor.

The short caused the dashboard lighting and backlights not to function.

Whenever starting vehicle or even driving electrical system would start acting up. Windshield wipers would go on by themselves, have not been turned on. Lights, interior & exterior, would go out. Ignition will not start vehicle sometimes. Also, would hear a clicking noise. Did not have a battery problems. Heater blower failed to work. No recalls on vehicle for electrical problems.

Vehicle was parked, and one of the doors was opened while talking for approximately 15 minutes. Courtesy light fell down due to fixture overheating and burning off the fastener. Dealer notified, and informed consumer to bring vehicle in. Please feel free to provide further details.

The interior dome light & cover fell down while vehicle was parked. Front passenger side door never fitted properly.

While driving on highway travelling 70mph, exited off the freeway and began to brake when engine cut off. Also, instrument lights came on, and the steering wheel locked up and was unable to turn. Engine turned back on, and was able to regain control of vehicle.

While driving; radio & interior lights will shut off when blinker, door & or other electronic component used or for no reason at all. Also have had problems w/ alarm system. Dealer unable to locate sorce of problem, changed radio twice, alarm & fuse box once.

I recently rented a 1999 Mercury Contour and drove it through rural western mass, vermont and new hampshire between dusk and dark, on interstate highways. Just after dusk I stopped to refuel the car. At that point the overhead dome light turned on, and would not turn off. I drove to the next rest area and stopped to read the owner's manual. It provided no useful information on turning off the light. However, while I was alone in the rest area reading the manual in a car lit up like a spotlight(and I am female), a strange man approached my car from behind with what I assume were bad intentions. I then drove another 50 miles to a total of 7 gas stations before I found one with an attendant. He also had no idea how to turn off the dome light. I then had to choose between spending the night in a rental car in a parking light near the interstate, or drivng home with a lit dome light and close to zero visibility. As my life insurance is paid up, I chose option (b. ) and drove home. It seems to me that NHTSA should require car manufacturers, and especially this car manufacturer, to supply all interior lights with a positive on-off switch. Either that, or supply large sledge hammers and a promise of indemnity from car rental agencies. Please let me know what you will do about this unsafe design flaw.

Lights on dash dim significantly upon start up, problem continue for a time, but suddenly stopped, on occasions it recurs, the problem has never been resolved. Cj.

All the all the lights are working intermittently. Also, when using the a/c unit consumer has to put the a/c on high in order to use the system.

Interior and courtesy lights intermittently flash rapidly on and off, cause unknown.

Light that indicates overflow of coolant tank failed to go off. Sensor was replaced by dealership and a service bulletin #10159 was performed. This didn't change the lighting failure.

Problems with the engine light coming on and the servicing dept at the Ford dealer and other auto servicing center could not figure out why to this day it is on. At one time the entire interior lights and rear brakes lights went out. It currently shut its self off ( stalls) and get hot. The engine sounds revved up and shortly after the ac unit went out. Everything has been checked out/ the alternator was replaced the crankshaft was replaced some wiring had to be replaced all the fluids are where they should be and it still stalls and overheats for no reason. Both front windows electrical motors have gone out.

Design of overdrive light makes it difficult to steer while driving through water.
