My power steering and brakes went out as I was driving. I was making a turn in town, and I almost collided with another car at the intersection. I pushed the brakes as hard as I could, but it didn't slow down, the car just eventually rolled to a stop on its own. The exact cause is unknown, but it seems like it was a failure in the power steering pump. After turning off the van and turning it back on again a minute later, it started driving normally again.

Frame/ chassis cracked at steering box mount due to rusting from the inside of the frame out. There are holes and small open areas in the 4 sided frame. There is no wheel well material protecting this area from excessive amount of salt, water, dirt and debris entering in these holes as well, there is no way to maintain, clean, protect or inspect the insides of the frame to know your steering is going to fail. I am not the only person that is having this problem. Please review. Thanks for reading. Sincerely zachary mccauley. 586-277-3049 or zman6673@gmail. Com.

While turning into a parking space the bolts to the steering box sheared off with complete loss of steering. Further inspection showed severe cracking and loss of metal in the steering box area. After doing some searches I found that this is common issue in the e series vans. I did do a recall search and a csa search to see about having this problem resolved safely by a certified shop. Unfortunately I haven't found any recall information on what is obviously a serious safety issue. Apparently the bolts shear off at low speeds while turning. The real concern is should one bolt only crack and not let the steering box become useless the vehical may be at highway speed when the failure does occour causing complete loss of control of the vehicle. I've read hundreds of emails on this subject and none had a resolution provided by the Ford motor company. I would think that something this critical would have been addressed by now. Concidering the recalls for comparatively much lesser safety issues. Thank you for reviewing this matter.

Frame corroded causing steering box to break through the frame and complete steering loss which nearly caused a head on collision and leaving van inoperable and completely without steering.
In a parking lot, I went to turn left, heard a loud clunk and the van just went straight. Lost all steering control. Luckily this happened in a parking lot and not on the road at higher speed. If this had occurred at speed, I would have hit oncoming traffic , or gone off the road into who knows what. Two separate mechanics have diagnosed a complete frame failure wihich allowed the steering box to detach from the frame. The frame is not repairable. If this is a common problem with the 2002 Ford e150 frame people are going to get hurt or killed!!!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Ford E-150. The contact stated that the vehicle's frame experienced severe corrosion. As a result the contact lost steering because the bolts connected to the gear box, which all were connected to the frame, detached from the vehicle. The contact was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was recommended the vehicle be taken to a dealer for a diagnostic. The vehicle was taken to les stumpf Ford located 3030 w college Ave, appleton, WI where the failure was confirmed however no further assistance was offered due to 0 recalls being on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000. Kh.
While backing out of tight parking spot 9/1/17, with multiple turns of the wheel, turned wheel one last time to pull forward into parking spot drive area but at that point, heard a clunk and all steering control was gone. Called for a tow. Tow truck drive assisted in the diagnosis noting that the steering box had disconnected from van frame rendering steering wheel connection lines useless. Had van towed home. After online read, looked at frame through left front tire access and saw the 3 bolts we read about. Grabbed the top bolt and it came right out. Same with second bolt. Last (third) bolt was a bit jammed due to the steering box drop, but all 3 bolts had sheared and all steering was lost. Had we not stopped at a store for labor day holiday supplies on our way to campsite, would have lost steering somewhere else, like on the freeway, possibly during a similar turn situation. We could have killed others or ourselves. Found that this Ford e150 steering bolt issue has already been documented. Why when we had the van serviced and said the steering had felt "loose", why didn't any mechanic find this potential?? un-excusable situation. Our parents, children and grandchildren are currently dependent on us. Had we died due to loss of steering, what a nightmare that would have been. Granted, the 20-yr-old van is rusty, but we didn't know to look under the left front tire area and apparently, multiple (non-Ford dealerships) mechanics didn't either !!.

The van wanders back and forth at highway speeds (> 60mph). I had the front end alignment and suspension checked out - all ok. Problem gets worse when pulling a 5000 lb camper - almost a safety issue.

1. Vehicle clunk and lurch forward right before it reaches complete stop. 2. With fully aligned wheels, the steering wheel can not be centered when going straight. Vehicle wanders on perfectly leveled road.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford E-150. The contact stated that while driving at certain speeds, the steering wheel and the entire front driver side seat vibrated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 6,500. The VIN was not available.
Gearbox bolts broke away from frame causing loss of steering.
While turning on to my street the three bolts holding the gear box to the frame sheared off causing loss of control of the vehicle.
Driving this van is very difficult, it will not hold a straight line ,when you pass big trucks going approximately 65 mph ,the vacuum sucks it up ,and it gets more uncontrollable, causing a minor fish tale. Of course Ford checked it out and found nothing wrong . M---KS could not duplicate the problem. . Do not drive this van if is at all windy, could become uncontrollable and unsafe . The wandering in the steering is not acceptable . I would not recommend this van for anyone. Or any business.

Driving home from shopping I backed out of a parkings space and heard a loud popping sound upon inspection the 2 mounting bolts holding the gearbox to the frame rail had sheared off and the 3rd one had ripped through the frame rail completely and dropped the gearbox had to have it towed home upon further inspection there are stress cracks around the mounting holes for the gearbox bolts.
Two issues here. First issue. When making turns there is a clunk sound from the front of the vehicle after the turn as the stering wheel is returned to forward position. Happens intermittant. Cannot feel the clunk in the wheel, but the sound is like metal on metal. Second issue: rear suspensiong clunks and squeeks a lot. (like it is 20+ years old. ) standing on the bumper or pushing sideways on the fender makes the rear-end squeek. I took it to Ford for repair and they stated there was a technote that told them to 'lube' the rear leaf springs. For a few months it made the sound go away, but made the backend feel loose or like it was sliding sideways on corners. At this same visit the engine performance changed noticably. Acceleration was smoother and did not hesitate as much. (they say they did nothing that would cause this change. ) I'm not sure I am getting true answers from the service advisor. Now six months later all the sounds and clunking sounds are back. I feel like it was not designed safe enough for the load rating they gave it or something. I want to make sure it is safe and not going to just end up physically broken somewhere on the road because they want to lube it every six months.

The contact owns a 1997 Ford E-150. The contact stated that the steering box detached from the frame of the vehicle while the contact was driving. The dealer and manufacturer were notified, but denied any assistance with repairs to the defect. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 162,000.
This vehicle, a 2011 E-150 Ford van wagon has power assisted steering. Same problems experienced to a lesser degree reported in 2 complaints filed on the 2010 E-150. Steering becomes uncontrollable starting at 50 mph and becomes progressively worse as speed increases to 75 mph. The 2 prior incidences referenced above occurred between 50-75 mph. Any slight adjustments by driver, especially at 70 mph, creates sway conducive to rollover. It seems as if the "power assist" interferes with driver's control of steering wheel. At higher speeds, over-steer is created and when the driver makes a correction, a swaying effect is created. As speed increases, the power assist function is supposed to diminish, giving driver full control. Technicians at dealership confirmed above symptoms and stated an engineering problem because alignment was according to specs. First occurrence was when there was only 60 miles on the odometer. Thereafter what is described occurred every time in the range between 55-75 mph. Steering and handling is extremely dangerous at speeds above 55 mph. The consumer stated the sway bar is undersized which tends to shift to the right causing metal to metal contact. Sway bars are not supposed to shift, they are supposed to remain in place. Updated 08/05/11 the consumer also stated the shock absorber was cracked. Updated 08/24/11 the suspension is inadequate and the body top on top of the wheel frame moves whereas the body tracks. When traveling down the highway at 70 mph, the suspension can not handle the wind resistance of any cross wind at all. The body of the van shifts. Updated 09/08/11.
The 3 mounting bolts attaching the steering box to the frame broke/sheared off as the vehicle was being parked in the driveway. 1999 Ford e150 van. A loud popping noise or bang was heard and total loss of steering was the result of the steering box dangling from the frame. The vehicle was being repositioned on a flat driveway, no incline at all. No injuries resulted , but if the failure had occurred during operation, steering would have been inoperable leading to an accident which easily could have led to serious injury to the driver, passengers, and other vehicles and their occupants.

explanation of two life threatening situations
situation one:
on may 4, 2010, I the consumer, was driving from johns creek, georgia to chattanooga, tenn. The trip was on georgia hwy 400 south from old milton pkwy to I-285 west and north on I-75. The time was between 3:30 pm and 5:30pm. The van was difficult to control and was moving from the left to the right sides of the traffic lane. The traffic was considered normal for I-75 with 18 wheel truck and passenger car traffic. The van was driven with the flow of traffic approximately between 65 and 75 mph. In the dalton, georgia area of I-75 the van was approaching an overpass. At the overpass the pavement must have changed in level because the van jumped in the air and turned slightly to the left approaching the left guard rail. Fortunately, the consumer driver was able to regain control before hitting the guard rail or the truck on the right. The van was returned to cherokee Ford on may 5, 2010 for correction of the difficult control problem. The problem has not been repaired to date. Situation two:
on October 15, 2010 I the consumer, was driving south on georgia hwy 400 from old milton pkwy to the abernathy exit. The time was between 2:30pm to 2:45pm. Traffic was heavy with passenger car traffic and the van was traveling in the middle left lane of the four lane highway. Traffic speed was normal for georgia 400 about 65 to 75 mph. The van was difficult to control and was moving from the left to the right sides of the traffic lane, similar with situation one. For no apparent reason and with no change in the steering wheel direction the van went left into the far left lane. I tried to return to the middle left lane, but the van would not respond with a slight turn to the right. After some distance, unknown, the van did respond and returned to the middle left lane.

Major shaking in the front end of the vehicle and steering control greatly reduced. This problem has been on going, and the dealer keeps telling me it is normal. If this is normal, than these vehicles need to be removed from the highways before death occurs.
At 35mph consumer would try to make a turn but vehicle will delay the turn. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.
