9 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2000 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 10/14/2010

I was driving a Ford diesel van north on highway 31 towards pennington, NJ, when the truck started acting up. Ultimately, it stalled - right there on the highway; 4 lanes, semi trucks coming around a bend @ 40 + mph, and no shoulder. I told my helper to leave the truck because I was sure we were going to get hit. No way a tractor trailer, at those speeds, could stop in time. Several semi's had to cut off cars in the left lane to avoid us. I thought for sure I was dead. After sweating it out, I finally got the truck started and got to a side street, at about 5 mph. That's when I called aaa & got the truck towed to my Ford dealer, where they want $2500 to repair what they call " fuel tank delamination". I never heard of such a thing and neither did anyone I spoke with in the auto repair industry so I googled Ford diesel fuel tank problems, and as it turns out, there are thousands of vehicles out there with the exact same problem. I"m surprised no one has died yet, but I guess that's what it will take, maybe when a couple of kids die, Ford will do something about it, if it doesn't cost too much - of course. To alleviate this "problem," the Ford dealer is, in effect, going to replace the entire fuel delivery system, at the consumers cost. New fuel tank, new fuel transfer pump, clean out the fuel lines, replace fuel filter, clean injectors, so, bend over. Ps really hope nobody has to die - but that's your call.

11 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

My mechanic described and confirmed the symptoms in NHTSA #10022243, where the lining of the fuel tank is separating from the tank and clogging the fuel filter and fuel pump. This causes loss of power primarily on the freeway. It consistently gets worse where it happens every few minutes. The repairs others have made have been to get a new tank or boil out and re-coat the defective tank. I plan to boil it out as that is the only option I can afford.

21 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 05/12/2009

2002 Ford e350 diesel van. We bought the van with 32k miles on it. We replaced the first gas tank with 65k miles in PA after it broke down on I-81. We replaced the second gas tank at 80k miles at otis Ford in quogue, NY. We are now going to replace the tank again, tank #3, because the same issue is happening again. The inside of the fuel tank has been delaminating and causing the fuel filter to become clogged. The van will lose power and chug along spewing out black smoke. It has been a known problem by Ford yet they claim it is not their fault. This has become a very expensive problem and under the right conditions with the lack of power has the potential to cause an accident.

22 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford E-350

24 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 04/06/2009

Fuel tank liner is separating causing corrosion and rust in the fuel tank. Ford refuses to warranty the problem. They are blaming it on the diesel fuel, which is inaccurate. I have one confirmation from a customer that they finally covered his repair, however, he had to lodge complaints with both the NHTSA and the bbb. So I am officially lodging a complaint against Ford motor company, steven's Ford (the dealer), and the warranty company. The safety aspect of this is the truck stalls while driving and does not restart. The truck also experienced a loss of power when going uphill. Both of which can cause a dangerous situation when in heavy traffic. This is a chronic problem that Ford is aware of and is denying responsibility. I personally know of at least 5 people who have had similar problems with their e350 vans due to corrosion in the fuel tank. This is not an isolated incident and should be covered under the warranty. (please note there is less than 36,000 miles on this, but Ford is not taking responsibility, neither is the warranty company from which an extended warranty was purchased) . Ford is trying to blame the reason on use of more than 5% mixture of biodiesel and is saying that the reason they are not covering the problem is that there is rust in the fuel tank. The rust is a reaction from the fuel in a poorly designed fuel tank. If it were a diesel fuel problem this would occur in different makes of trucks, not just Ford. There is a huge problem, that is not only a safety, but an environmental one as well.

25 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2006 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 01/05/2009

Ford is knowingly installing faulty diesel fuel tanks in light trucks since 2002 and refusing to repair under warranty. The defect causes the fuel system to become clogged resulting in a loss of power. Therefore causing a traffic safety hazard. The resulting damage to fuel system and engine costs 6,000. 00 plus. In my case I have a Ford e350 w/a 6. 0 diesel motor w/ 80,000 miles still under warranty but the claims this is not covered. . Read more...

26 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford E-350

In January 2009, engine began running rough. Took to Ford dealer, and they tested fuel system. Diagnosed rust in fuel due to fuel tank rusting and replaced fuel tank and filters. December 2010, the engine began running rough again. Took vehicle to non Ford repair, and was diagnosed that fuel tank was delaminating and had clogged filters, and injectors. Will need to replace fuel tank, fuel filters, and injectors.

27 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 1998 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 12/08/2008

Fuel tank lining deteriorating. I have found flakes in my last four fuel filters. Vehicle loss of power, then rough running. The flakes are in the filter I have added between tank and fuel pump. They are small pieces of grey or silver paint. I am going to have to replace fuel tank in order to rectify the problem. I replaced the filter this morning, put approx. 90 miles on van and found several ounces in the filter this evening.

28 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2001 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 12/03/2008

I have a 2001 Ford E-350 van with a 7. 3 litre diesel engine. We have been experiencing engine problems and upon returning the vehicle to the dealership where we purchased it, we were informed that the fuel tank interior lining has degraded and is clogging the fuel system. Estimates for the repair are in the range of $1500-1600. Upon investigation on the internet and during a conversation with the service manager, we have learned that this is an on-going problem with Ford diesel equiped vehicles. We feel this is a product defect and should be the responsibility of the manufacturer to correct it at their expense.

29 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 09/29/2008

When driving my truck last week it started slowing down and violently shaking. It would not drive faster than 30mph on 95. We found that the fuel system was clogged. We then removed the fuel tank and found what looked to be silver paint chips in the bottom of the tank. It appears as though the lining of the tank is delaminating. This has clogged the entire fuel system. I am in the process of replacing the tank but I don't know if the new tank will have the same problem. I have read many other accounts of this problem online and the repairs to this point will cost me about 1000 dollars.

30 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2003 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 08/28/2008

I was in traffic and crossing an intersection when my vehicle lost all power and stalled. After a few minutes of sitting the vehicle ran fine. Later in traffic it did it again and an accident almost occurred. I had the vehicle checked by pro automotive services and found the inside of the fuel tank lining is flaking off blocking the fuel lines and stalling the vehicle out. This is a very dangerous and unheard of problem. The vehicle is 5 years old and the fuel tank inside is flaking badly. You never know when the vehicle is going to stall or fail in traffic. There where no failure codes displayed or check engine light coming on.

31 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2002 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 07/21/2008

Delaminating fuel tanks on Ford E-350 ambulances. Causes damage to the fuel pump then stalling where it needs to be towed. This situation is with patients on board. This problem needs to be checked out and recalls done. The cost to repair is $1,370. 46 per truck. We own 8 of them all with the same problem.

Steel diesel fuel tank delamination on 3 e350 Ford ambulances and 1 f350 Ford firetruck.

33 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

I own 4 diesel powered Ford e350 vans. In 2008 I have had a fuel tank replaced in a 2000 and 2004 van. I decided to have my 2007 checked and found that the fuel filters were clogged. I have spent over $7000. 00 so far. Although Ford did not replace the tank in my 2007 I am starting to wonder when I will have to have this done. I have one other 2000 that just started having problems. I don't need to spend another $7000. 00. I asked for about delamination but they said its the fuel I'm using. I saw the fuel filters that came out of the vehicles and it was a gray/ silver material.

34 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2004 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 07/08/2008

2004 E-350 Ford diesel van . . In 06 fuel tank delamination Ford replaced tank. . 08 fuel tank delamination again @ 14000 mi. Cost to me 2200. 00. I know I am not alone with this problem, the dealership said they do at least two a month. This is a dangerous condition. . The truck loses power and stalls.

35 Diesel Fuel System problem of the 2005 Ford E-350

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Vehicle was regularly maintained be an owner who has had experience with and owned diesel vans for over 20 years. The failure occurs while driving on the highway, when average speeds are around 60 mph after driving for about fifteen minutes. While driving, the engine begins to steadily lose power and speed consistently decreases. This will lead the driver to hastily change lanes to attempt to get to the shoulder before the van stops in the middle of the road. Once on the side of the road, the engine will cut off once the vehicle has come to a stop and will not start up again for 10-20 minutes. Other times the vehicle will not start up again and will need to be towed. Once the failure started for the first time, it would repeat this failure once every other week, then one week, then a few times a week, then almost everyday. The consequences, for example, was when the engine failed and lost power I had to hastily try to get to the number 3 lane from the number 1 lane during morning rush hour, which endangers everyone on the road. After getting to the side, I attempted to turn into an exit when the wheels locked and engine cut off. The front half of the van was directly in the way of oncoming traffic, almost hitting a car and causing a massive backup because the van cannot move. The consequences of this failure is thousands of dollars in falsely attempts at fixing the problem from the Ford dealership. The vehicle was taken to the dealership for repairs a total of five times by which the fifth one the dealership wanted $2000 dollars to replace the gas tank because of particulates from the coating of the tank eroded and destroyed the fuel system. The first said it was the fuel injectors, then fuel pump, then two additional fuel pumps, then charged $1000 for an engine flush. The van was in the shop for approx. 25 days to which nothing was resolved. We are currently taking legal actions to pay for costs of unnecessary repairs, rental fees, and the days unable to work.
