Only 87000 miles and the fuel tank is shedding silver paint flakes, into the fuel system. . Have now replaced all the filters twice, pump once. . And the tank pre filter has to be clogged as no fuel will even come out. . Had been a very good truck, but this engineering causes the van to just die!! on the road. This is apparently a common problem and one that Ford and their engineers are not being responsible for. . Really. . . Paint inside at fuel tank? wtf are they thinking. . .

After many times at several dealerships explaining loss of power, shaking and bucking while on the highway, smoke when starting, rough running. Dealers not able to fix specific problem. I stated that when fuel filter was changed by my mechanic he tells me my tank is delaminating and needs to be replaced. I tell one dealer and show him the contents of the filter replacement which is rusty metal and flakes and he says how do I not know that that didn't come from someone else truck. That was from kennedy Ford in jenkintown PA. I said to remove the fuel filter and check they refused. I have an extended warranty with Ford which cost over 4000. 00 and this is the second time around I paid for said warranty. I called Ford extended warranty at that time and they said it was covered under the tank code 6010. I have a 100. 00 deductible which I have used so many time for repairs of this truck. I know I'm not the only one complaining about this problem.

While traveling on an interstate highway, the van started showing symptoms of fuel starvation and with the family and a semi on my bumper things got quite hairy and started and argument with my wife! I exited the highway and put clean diesel fuel and fuel additive to get me back home; this did not work as the van acted up again several miles down the road. After stopping and starting numerous times on a side street, I got to a place where I could change the fuel filter; I noticed that it was full of rust and aluminum flakes. The van would not move any further, I had to trailer it home, the next day. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the aluminum coating the fuel take had come off and was plugging up the fuel pickup, emergency valve and the filter. You can do an internet search and find were this is a common problem with Fords. If I would have known about it I would have performed preventive maintenance on the fuel tank and filters. Very dangerous and expensive to repair when it is to late. . . . .

While drive on highway, vehicle began to lose power when I encountered a hill. It bogged down and struggled to make it to top of hill and lost speed down to 30 mph or less and then died. It would not start right away, but after letting it sit for 15 minutes, it started and had regained power and I drove ti till I got to the nest hill and did the same thing several times till I made it home 3 hours later for a 10 mile trip. I checked online on the vehicle for Ford owners forum and saw that several people encountered this problem before and described it as bogging down and losing power. Some one suggested changing the egr valve which I had done, and the fuel filters as well as air filter. When I removed the bottom fuel filter under the van, I captured the fuel in the filter and line and it had what looked like silver paint. I kept the sample and it is soft and pliable. I assumed it was a protective coating lining the fuel tank. I don't believe this should be happening, because it could do damage to the injectors and other things.
Lost power. Filter heavily plugged particulate. Dropped tank. Bottom of tank has 1/2" silvery flakes. Fuel pick-up screen plugged. Boiled and reinstalled tank. Fuel pump failure about 2 months later. New pump. At 149000 mile, new tank and may need new pump. Tank was deliminating.

I have a 2000 Ford e350 that started running rough and eventually lost power on the freeway when it was needed I did'nt know what happening to the vehicle it just started sputtering and spewing thick smoke out of the tail pipe. I limped the van to the dealetship and after all diagnosis and replacement of certain fuel parts was said and done it was a clogged fuel sending unit due to a rusty fuel tank caused by delamination of the lining inside the tank. These particals of delamination and the rust of the exposed metal of the tank caused the sending unit to be clogged to the point of replacement, the sending unit alone was over $600. 00 of the $1600. 00 bill, it was explained to me that the problem of the clogged fuel sending unit will happening again in about a year due to the tank failing. I am very concerned with losing power again and not being able to get off the road on a major freeway and spewing the big cloud smoke out the tail pipe when this happens again and possibly blinding the drivers behind me. I spoke with the dealer, I was advised that the tanks are made of plastic now to avoid/fix this problem. I spoke with Ford motor corp. , they stated that my vehicle was out of warrany and they would not cover this unvoidable problem. I have taken very good care of this vehicle, it is a service vehicle for my company and when it is down I do not make any money. I do everything I can to perform the prevenitive maintenance, there is nothing I could have done to avoid this safety issue, Ford knows the problem/safety issue is there and did not want to help out at all. After all the research that I have done since paying the bill at the dealership I am very disappointed to hear what others are going through and the routes they are taking to try to get the problem resolved, this why I have wriiten you this letter.
