3 Equipment problem of the 2021 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 06/10/2024

Component= traction control and cruise control. Safety risk=driving a Ford E-450 class c RV on interstate at 63 mph going generally up hill with cruise control on, the "service advancetrac" warning light came on dashboard. I immediately lost cruise control capability and steering became a little shakey. Pulled into rest area shut vehicle off. A few minutes and started again. Error went away and cruise control was functioning. Happened again a few hours later and I did the same thing and continued on. What happened=as I was driving, the " service advance traction" light came on and the cruise control stopped, my class c RV immediately slowed at a high rate, a semi was behind me trying to get over to the middle lane. When I slowed down suddenly due to the cruise control going out, the semi had no choice but to change lanes quickly missing the back of my vehicle by a foot or so. If he was not alert as to what was happening, I most assuredly would not be typing this letter. It was that close!! note= this also happened last year as we only take the RV out a few weeks out of the year. I brought it to klammer Ford in new port richey f1l immediately after we got back from the last trip. They could not reproduce issue or find anything wrong lamps= the only warning light that came on was a "service advance traction" light. No prior indication of any kind.

5 Equipment problem of the 2021 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 05/02/2023

The tpms system in my RV is not working properly. The Ford dealer says they will not work on it because it is an RV and "modified" by the RV manufacturer. The RV manufacturer says they won't work on it and to take it to the Ford dealer. I've been to 3 tire stores trying to recalibrate and program the sensors and nothing has worked. I have two wheel tpms sensors that will not work. The cluster displays no information for those tires (sometimes it will read one tire). I would have no idea if a tire was going flat other than a complete loss of pressure/control. This should be covered under warranty.

11 Equipment problem of the 2022 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 06/02/2022

The tire pressure monitoring system fails frequently while being driven. The first few times I pulled off the road and checked the pressures, and they were normal. I had the system checked at a Ford dealership and they couldn't find any problem. It failed again. I returned to the dealership and they said they couldn't find a problem and there is nothing they could do for me. So I drive away from the dealership and the same thing happens. Believing that they can't do anything I keep driving and manually checking pressures. Problem returns. I went to a different Ford dealership and they said they found a faulty sensor and replaced it. The same problem came back after less than a few miles. I needed gas so I filled up and realized that after turning the ignition off and restarting, the light on the dash and the warning went away. I returned to that dealership and they said after hearing my explanation. They couldn't do anything unless the fault was active at the time I brought it to them. So I was told to drive it until I got the safety warning and to not shut it off until I got to a Ford dealership. Really!!! not all Ford dealerships will service the e450s with rvs built on the chassis. Reasonable? no way! there is a problem with the system that Ford should be able to correct. I don't feel safe having to pull over and check tire pressures on a busy highway. And it's not necessary if they address the problem and fix it.

14 Equipment problem of the 2021 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 06/18/2021

The service advance trac light comes on sporadically. This also triggers the cruise control and hill start assist to turn off. Any of these malfunctions could prove to be a safety issue particularly with regard to stability and control of the vehicle. The vehicle has not yet been to a dealer for these issues as we are traveling. The malfunction has occurred about 5-6 times while driving, without any particular triggers. There were no early warnings and the first time the service light came on was June 18th and we were on a two lane flat road doing about 50 mph. The advance trac (and cruise/hill start) remains non-functional until vehicle is turned off for at least 10 minutes. It then often resets and performs normally until the next failure - which does not seem to be predictable.

16 Equipment problem of the 2018 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 06/15/2019

. This is a safety concern. We were on a trip and at one point my right foot touched the dog house near the accelerator. I moved my foot very quickly because it was hot and burned my foot. When we arrived home, I used a non contact thermometer to measure the surface temperature of the dog house on the drivers side. The lowest temperature I found was 120 degrees and the highest temperature was 148 degrees. The 148 degree temperature was next to where my foot is when I am driving. Since this is an RV we typically drive for several hours at a time. This temperature occurred a few hours into the trip and has been repeated on subsequent trips. This is mostly highway driving.

17 Equipment problem of the 2018 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 11/05/2018

I received a recall letter stating the awning (solera Smart arm manufactured by lippert) on my newly purchased forest river RV could begin to open up as the vehicle was in motion. Because of the extreme safety issue, I immediately took it into the service department for fear it would rip off while driving and cause a collision and possible serious injury to others. After attempting to fix the recall issue my awning has never worked properly. After 7 attempts, several replacement parts and three years later, my awning still does not work. After each time the awning was serviced, I would bring it back to storage. A month or two later I would go on a trip. Once I arrived at my location, I would attempt to open my awning and it was inoperative. It would take one to two months to get a service appointment and then a month or more for the service technician to attempt to fix the issue. This occurred five times after the initial attempt to fix the recall. Each time moisture got into the exterior controls and no amount of sealant would rectify the problem. I am unsure if the safety issue has even been rectified and now have to travel with zip ties around my awning arms. Once again, my awning is inoperative.

24 Equipment problem of the 2016 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 07/31/2016

Thor motor coach sold me a 2016 four winds class c model 23u motor home with a class iv hitch that is not safe for the stated capacity of 8,000 pounds. If the hitch is used in the stated 8,000 pound capacity, the hitch will fail and cause an accident. Ford motor company makes the e450 chassis that the motor home body is mounted on. Ford states that the tongue weight for a properly loaded 8,000 pound trailer should be in the range of 800 to 1,200 pounds (10% to 15%). Thor motor coach has DE-rated the hitch capacity to 500 pounds which results in a maximum safe hitch rating of 5,000 pounds. It is my understanding that if I am to have a safe tow with an 8,000 pound trailer, I will need a minimum of 800 pounds on the hitch which may lead to a substantial and serious mechanical failure. Thor motor coach advertises the hitch as 8,000 pounds which may directly lead to unsafe towing. I am concerned that many motor home owners will rely on the thor motor coach statement for an 8,000 pound hitch and seriously overload the supplied hitch. It is my understanding that about 4,500 people died in towing related accidents between 2002 and 2012. I am attaching a picture of the actual hitch rating plate. I recommend that thor motor coach quit advertising the hitch at 8,000 pounds due the accident prone towing condition this creates.

26 Equipment problem of the 2006 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 03/13/2014

The preliminary report regarding the fire onboard a commonwealth of massachusetts soldiers home owned handicapped transportation bus indicates the fire cause may have been electrical in nature. The vehicle in question is a 2006 Ford e- 450. An odor of smoke was reported by the driver, enio lopez, just after assisting a veteran onto the bus at the chelsea soldiers home. Upon reporting the odor of smoke, the driver was instructed to remove the veteran from the vehicle and shut the vehicle down. The fleet service administrator for the chelsea soldiers home, upon investigating the odor of smoke located a fire in the right front of the bus in the electrical panel. They contacted the chelsea fire department and grabbed the extinguisher onboard to attempt to extinguish the fire and prevent further damage. Upon discharging the extinguisher, the fire did not go out and seemed to be intensifying also smoke and flames were visible from the engine compartment. A campus security officer responding to calls for more extinguishers assisted themin fighting the fire. Two more extinguishers were provided to them and by an environmental services supervisor and employee. Chelsea fire department arrived on seen and finished extinguishing the fire, disconnecting the battery and overhauling the interior of the bus to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire. Once the fire was completely extinguished the bus was turned back over to the commonwealth of massachusetts soldiers home and was towed to its current location behind vinnie¿s place.

27 Equipment problem of the 2011 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

This vehicle was converted to an ambulance by wheeld coach. The ambulance caught fire and spread to the building in which it was parked and unoccupied. A paramedic smelled something coming from the bay, and, when he went to investigate, he saw smoke and fire dripping from underneath the ambulance. An investigator determined that the lug connection at the alternator was improperly installed by wheeled coach. The connection produced a high resistance connection, producing temperatures sufficient to ignite a competent fuel source and/or caused the battery cable insulation to fail, producing electrical arcing that provided a competent ignition source to cause the fire.

29 Equipment problem of the 2006 Ford E-450

Failure Date: 08/17/2011

This same problem has been reported by people complaining on blogs. While in motion the vehicle will cut out. All power just stops and the vehicle rolls to a stop. It can be restarted. There is no indication when this will happen. It has happened on the expressway, at a repair facility, stopping at a traffic light, going down the road. Speed is not a common factor. The key has one or two other keys on the "key chain". There is no special weather situation. I do not know if it is the same cause as the gm problem with the ignition, but it produces the same result. This is a handicap shuttle van.
