The contact owns a 2006 Ford Econoline(na). While driving and engaging the brake pedal, the warning light came. There was also noise under the hood of his vehicle. The contact stated that the anti lock brake system suddenly caught fire. He turned the vehicle off and waited for an hour to restart it; however, when he attempted to drive smoke and fire were coming from the brakes. He shut the engine off, extinguished the fire, and disconnected the abs module unit under the hood. The contact was able to drive to the dealer who did not reconnect the abs module. The contact is currently able to continue driving the vehicle using the normal braking system with no failures. The abs module will be repaired. The failure mileage was 54,500.

While proceeding slowly, approx. 3 mph, moving up at a traffic light, steering wheel jerked to the left, felt slack with some slight vibration & popping at , and when I pressed the brakes it almost seemed as those the brakes locked up. Pedal would only depress approx 1/4 , with some vibration in pedal, with a grumbling noise. The van then felt as though brakes locked up with the rear end sliding. No collision but was extremely close. There were no high speeds involved & in addition the roads were not wet. The van was then towed to a local dealership where the problem would not duplicate; therefore no action was taken for repair.

Downhill grade applied brakes, vehicle began shaking along with steering wheel. As brakes were pumped shaking became worse to where began to loose control. Same thing on return trip. Braking works fine on level terrain. Situation was very frightning. Took vehicle to Ford dealer who stated that if the symptoms cannot be replicated in the shop they will not be able to diagnose the problem. They asked if the asb light came on. I responed that I was too busy trying to gain control of the vehicle to notice. They suggested I try to repeat the situation to determine if the asb light comes on and if it does bring the vehicle to the dealer shop.

Consumer stated that when applying the anti lock brakes at 40 mph the brakes will lock up causing the consumer to have a vehicle rollover. Dealer notified. Ts.
The anti-lock brakes do not function properly. I noted the fist occurrence only, there have been 4 addional occurrences of the same problem. The anti-lock system engages, clamps hard one time and then releases. This leaves you free rolling until it decides to continue or you take your foot up and reapply the brakes. When it does continue on its own the steering wheel shakes violently.
Anti lock brakes experienced continued failures, one incident resulting in vehicle collision.
Brake pedal needs to be pressed hard to bring vehicle to a stop. This results in extended stopping distance. Dealer notified on three occasions, and informed consumer that was normal condition of that type of vehicle. Seeking answers in this matter from NHTSA.

Going about 45-50mph when brakes locked up going down hill after being applied. Took to dealer & applied brakes which started smoking. Mechanic noticed. Second time brakes have been checked & replaced.
Whenever abs brakes are applied, either on dry/damp pavement, vehicle would not slow down. It would suddenly pick up speed. Happens at low speed (30mph or less). Have taken to dealer & told could not locate problem.

Dash board "abs" light comes on and stays on intermittently. Since vehicle has low mileage but is out of warranty for time, Ford motor company estimates $750. 00 to repair however do not think that a component of this nature should fail at this low mileage since the vehicle is used in very light duty as evidenced by mileage shown since purchased in June 1996.
While at a stop the van accelerated on its own and overrode the brakes. This problem caused a crash in April of 1997 and several near misses. Dealer was not able to duplicate problem, and find out what was causing the problem. Please provide any further information.
