1 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Ford Edge. While operating the vehicle, a clunking noise was present when shifting gears and the vehicle hesitated while accelerating. On several occasions, the check engine indicator illuminated during the failures. After turning the vehicle off and back on, the failure would sometimes be corrected. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failures. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified. The failure mileage was 85,000.

Going 55 mph. All of a sudden car lose power. Engine sounds like it's in neutral but shift lever is in d. If you press gas, engine speed shows on the tach but transmission not responding. Made a very harrowing condition as I tried to find a safe place to pull over. When shifted from d to p, very hard jerking motion that shook the car violently, trans makes a very hard clunking noise, and as if wants to separate from the engine. Same result when shifted from p to r, and p to d. Car is currently parked waiting for mechanic to diagnose. Don't have money to take it to overpriced dealer. From what I can see from blogs, forums, boards, etc, on the internet looks like not an isolated case.

3 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 05/31/2016

In recent weeks, car at times seemed to slip slightly while shifting or there was a hard, lagging shift. While driving on highway, speedometer stopped working, info/trip readout on dash showed dashes instead of numbers. After a few minutes, multiple warning lights showed on dash, including passenger airbag light, a wrench icon, then the low tire pressure warning icon. Readout then changed to a tire pressure fault message. Pulled off the highway and after making a turn, car seemed under-powered/acceleration was compromised. Stopped at a service station, turned off the car, then restarted. After restarting, warning icons on dash disappeared. When car was shifted into reverse, car jerked violently and loud 'clunking' noise occurred. Shifting in and out of reverse, while the car was still stationary, jerking became even more pronounced and clunking noise became louder. Had the car towed to Ford dealer - after diagnosis, was told 2 sensors (the tss & oss) in the transmission were faulty and needed to be replaced. Additionally, was told fan module was also faulty, needed replacing. Approximately $1700 in repairs and was without the car for over a week. After researching issue online, came across many people experiencing the same exact problem in Ford Edges, almost always around the same mileage (approx. 77,800) and for various years. This should be a recall! to be honest, though the car is operating normally at the moment, I have little to no confidence that this sensor repair actually fixes the problem long term as some anecdotal research seems to show that others have experienced a return of the issue even after the sensor replacement. I believe this situation warrants investigation by NHTSA as Ford will deny/ignore the problem until forced to address it. Too many people have this same issue and not only is it costly, but could be very dangerous as well.

4 Noises During Shifting problem

2008 Ford Edge sel. . . . With 6f50 transmission. . . . 165000 miles. . . . Vehicle shifts externally hard from 3rd to 4th gear with a hard jerk and load klunk, so much so that it has started causing me neck problems from tensing up in anticipation of the jerk. Also 2 twice up going from park to drive, had an extremly load noise in transmission that shook the entire vehicle and as I attempted to accelerate the rpm rose but the car barely eased forward and the transmission sounded as though it were in a bind. I then put it in park, turned the ignition off, pulled out the key, open and shut the door as to pretend I was exiting, then put key back into ignition, started the car, put it in gear (no problem) and accelerated as normal (no problem), except when it shifted from 3rd to 4th which is around 25mph. I have not and do not have any lights on in the instrument display panel nor do I have any error codes showing. Macanic says it would be an expensive shot in the dark to start randomly changing out sensors and changing out transmission would not solve the problem as it is not an issue with the mechanics of the transmission but an electrical issue. I've also tried a hard reboot to the cars electrical system to possibly clear any stored electrical issues, problem still exists!!! definitely a recall needed, due to safety issues while driving and physical conditions that could arise from the tensing up in expectation of the hard jerk. . . . . .

5 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2015

Sometimes the transmission will not drive the car after a stop or if changing from drive to reverse or reverse to drive. Rpm will go very high and only move the car very slowly. At other times there will be a bad shift or a strange sound. This can happen any time, when first starting out for the day, after running for a time, after a long drive or after stopping for a turn, red light, stop sign or just slowing down. The dealer says there is nothing wrong. Also noise coming from the rear while in motion. I believe the sensors are intermittent as I had a similar problem with my Dodge caravan which went away after I replaced the sensors myself because the repair station told me there was nothing wrong after 3 attempts to have the problem rectified. You are all supposed to be professional experts so fix the problem.

6 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2014

I was driving down the highway when my speedometer and odometer stopped working. Then it told me I had a error and a fault in my tire pressure system. My airbag light came on, indicating that it was off. I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. When I started it back up all the error messages cleared, but when I went to put my car into drive it sounded as if the transmission had dropped. I tried driving only to rev the engine up to 3000 rpm with barely any movement. When ever shifting from drive or reverse it made that loud popping noise. I took it to a dealership to be told it stopped doing it but they didn't fix it. They made no repairs. They are letting me pick the car up and drive it again with out any actual resolution, but they did charge me money to "look at the car". Do people actually have to die for someone to issue a recall? I am reading thousands of reviews about the Edge that experience's the same problems. Lets issue a recall and develop some accountability!.

7 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2013

This occurred multiple times with my Ford Edge. I will be driving a highway speeds, and on the dashboard: 1. The odometer turns from numbers to dashes 2. The speedometer stops working 3. Various services lights will turn on (each time it happened, different lights came on) then,I brake to a full stop, the car loses all throttle, and I'm barely able to accelerate. When I go to shift gears, there is a harsh, clunking noise in the transmission as I'm shifting. I was told this was a defect in the speed sensors but it occurred a total of 4 times in about 8 months. I had to trade the car in because it was becoming too unsafe to drive.

8 Noises During Shifting problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2012

When travelling, all of a sudden the speedometer goes to 0, the maint'ce wrench lights up and we get an led message that I cant recall exactly at the moment. The vehicle can continue until you stop. Then it cannot proceed forward. Once you stop and shift to park, then try to proceed again, there is a loud clunking noise from the transmission, and the vehicle cant move forward. I believe it is getting stuck in 5th or overdrive. When a code reader is attached by a mechanic, the code it calls out is for the output speed sensor (in the transmission). Once the code is cleared the vehicle can perform normally. We had the oss replaced by a reputable transmission shop, and it was fine for a month or so. Now again we have seen the problem twice since replacing the oss. There seem to be many complaints on the internet regarding this exact problem. . Read more...
