The contact owns a 2015 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in for service, the mechanic discovered that the lug nuts were deformed and very difficult to remove from the wheels. The failure was present on the lug nuts on all four wheels. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 48,000.
Ford dealer told me the lug nuts were a bad two piece design and he has had to replace many of them by drilling out the studs and replacing them. Encouraged proactively replacing the 2 piece lug nuts with a new one piece design for a cost of $128 for 4 tires. Not covered by warranty/extended but this seems ridiculous for a vehicle that's 6 yrs old. I see lots of references on the internet to this issue. Seems like a straightforward bad design and obvious recall issue.
