I took my vehicle in for the recall due to involuntary acceleration and had the recall completed about 1-1. 5 years ago. Today, when I was leaving work for lunch, the vehicle automatically began accelerating when it was taken out of park. When I would try to stop, the vehicle would stop for a second, then begin to try to accelerate again. I was able to make it home safely only because I thought to put the vehicle into neutral at any stop signs or stop lights, then back into drive when the lights turned green again. I only knew to do this because I had had the same type of issues prior to the recall. In this incident, I never once used the cruise control though. It accelerated all on its own. I had one other situation similar to this about a year ago, but that was when I was using my cruise control and it wouldn't disengage. My local Ford dealership will not look at it unless I pay the $80 diagnostic fee, which is ridiculous because this issue was supposed to have been fixed.
The contact owns a Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle began to accelerate independently. The contact shifted into neutral and the engine revved. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the they could not diagnose the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 107,000. . . . Updated 03-12-14 the consumer stated over the course of 2 years, the vehicle has accelerated on its own. The consumer took the vehicle to 2 garages and 3 Ford dealerships, and no one could find anything wrong. Updated 04/01/14.
Sudden and rapid uncontrollable acceleration after removing my foot from accelerator. Despite my best efforts to brake and arrest my movement the vehicle still was moving forward. I impacted the rear end of a truck that thankfully was heavy enough to completely stop my forward movement. I had this vehicle in my local Ford dealer to address the cruise control recall. I was assured by the technicians that it was indeed modified (that the plastic engine cover was fitted with new longer fittings/bolts). This uncontrollable acceleration incident happened after alleged recall/repair.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while attempting a left turn, the vehicle suddenly accelerated as if the cruise control was engaged. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence. The police were notified and a citation was issued. There were no injuries and there were minor scratches to the vehicle's front bumper. The vehicle was drivable after the crash. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 97,016.
2003 Ford Escape. Consumer states cruise control will not turn on.
Had previously asked home dealership to check cruise control for failure to turn on. After traveling for approx. 1 hour on interstate, attempted to turn on cruise control. On third try, cruise control engaged and set at 70 mph. After a few miles I tried to turn it off with no results. Engine continued to accelerate when brake applied. I contacted someone who advised me to pull over and turn the car off if possible. I pulled in to a rest area with both feet on brake and was able to stop the car and immediately put it in park and turn it off. (very difficult with engine revving continuously) I tried to turn the car back on to see if the cruise turned off with the car, it did not, the engine immediately accelerated and the engine sounded as if it was going to explode. I turned the car off. The car was towed to a dealership and the cruise control throttle cable was found to be stuck. The cable was disconnected as they said they had no parts to replace the cruise control. I was sent on with a request to have it replaced at my home dealership. I was charged for the service.
The cruise control switch stopped working.
Apparently brake fluid leaked from the master cylinder onto the electronics causing an increase in internal voltage causing the electronics to short out causing a fire that destroyed the wiring harness. My concern is Ford currently has a recall on going for this issue in it's SUV's but the Escape is not mentioned. Why?.
