general problems of the 2009 Ford Escape - part 1

I went to trade in my car and was informed that frame behind front driver side is almost rusted through. Meaning the body could detach from frame or something else dangerous could happen. This is my only car and now I'm afraid to drive it.

I was driving down the road then all the sudden halfway through making a turn the power steering went completely out almost causing me to wreck. I looked up the issue and it is on the recall list but for some reason this individual vehicle doesn't have the recall. It falls into all there peramiters for being recalled. The Ford dealership gave me the same runaround. So now it is sitting with the power steering still not working. There were absolutely no warnings that this was going to happen. Not a light or anything.

Vehicle will not shift from park gear. Locking up and can't drive until it allows me to shift. Time varies and also have to start and restart the engine several times before it allows the shifter lock to release from park.

The power steering goes in and out. The car is very hard to start when the key is turned and sometimes it would take several tries to get it started. Now it won't start at all I changed the ignition switch and it still doesn't start.

I was almost involved in an accident while on the highway while trying to turn, my wheel locked up randomly, I was almost hit by an on coming vehicle. The mechanic inspected it and he said it was the powersteering, he also stated that they're was a safety recall on these vehicles for the same issue and that Ford motor CO. Was replacing all the steering colums in all other similar years, makes and models due to some failure from the manufacturer. The problem is that all the vehicles with this same issue also fall under different VIN numbers. This problem needs to be fixed because it's a major safety concern and is putting people who drive this vehicle as well as other drivers around in danger. I will attach a video of a man on yt explaining the same issue, it's not ok that 5 years later they're still hasn't been a safety recall for this clear and apparent manufacturer issue. Today on 2/16/2022 I called Ford motor CO and spoke to an employee by the name of aldri and he offered no solution. I would like for this to be recalled so that anyone experiencing the same issues can be safe of the roads. Sudden failure of power steering assist system while operating vehicle at moderate speed resulting in the steering to revert into manual mode creating a hazardous condition within city traffic. Dashboard notification “ power steering assist failure “ appearing. No failure code in obd 2 system.

When I put my key into the ignition it will not start the vehicle. I’ve searched this on the internet and found it is a very common problem with this model vehicle.

There is a systematic failures of braking system on this model, master cylender, booster, abs pump, etc. It's a badly designed braking system that fails at any time, putting lives of people under dangerous conditions. More often then not those failures are occurring at low speeds. Brake failure is most common problem on Ford Escape cars that looks like occurring much more often then even on rest of Ford vehicles.

Having problems with whole ignition housing unit it was stationary and won't start just sometimes.

While driving the steering wheel locks up where I cannot steer the vehicle. I have to pull over and then turn it off, restart the car to continue. It happens quite often. It happens both going straight and making a turn. It seems like it happens when I'm slowing down or coming to a stop. It happened many times. I will list the last time it happened. I haven't driven it since.

Starter stuck was still running after turning car off and removed key I replaced my starter to find that the ignition switch went out now my car won't start the car was parked when this happened not running.

I always have trouble with the ignition I have to try many ways to get it to start the key has to be turned certain ways and it is a struggle every time and I have it turns the steering wheel it is in the shop now because of this issue. . I have had trouble ever since I have had it I cannot just put the key in and start it I have to play wiht it every time.

I bought my Ford Escape limited, 4 wheel-drive SUV in August, 2009 from a dealer in baltimore county, maryland. Later I retired from the maryland highway administration and moved to augusta, GA in February, 2015. In mid 2020 I saw the abs light showing the my vehicle needed a repair to the abs system. When I took the vehicle to my friendly mechanic shop, he told me that the abs module was defective and that he could not fix it. Since then I have been having a serious safety problem with the abs module which makes driving my vehicle very risky, especially when it is raining. The risk is felt whenever I am driving and need to stop at the red light or when another vehicle suddenly comes close to my vehicle which requires a quick decision to avoid accident using the abs system that was designed for that purpose. In that case, I had difficulties stop and my vehicle will often pull to the left even with new brake pads on. That poses a serious safety threat. But as auto makers, the Ford company know or should know that nearly all Ford Escape and Mercury mariner vehicles are assumed to have abs module and other defects. Sadly, the Ford company neglected to notify me of the recall. The defects in the abs module of my SUV pose a serious safety risk to me; so, that is very concerning to me. Fuel inlet light constantly alerting. Known issue, have read thousands of owners having issue with this, installed gas cap didnt fix, cleaned the area didnt fix, only option left is to replace the inlet. If its a known problem due to faulty equipment should be recalled.

Tire pressure light comes on and and dome light blinks when the car is running all of the time.

The power steering went out. Very hard to turn steering wheel.

Fuel leak.

The key has a hard time starting the vehicle. It may be the ignition module.

On July 9, 2019 I was exiting the expressway and my vehicle began stalling at which time the odometer went down from 50 down to 0 immediately causing me to pull over to the side. Thank god I was already in the processing of exiting. No warning lights on the dashboard at all. I turned the car off, and then turned it back on. I took my car to firestone who was unable to perform a diagnostic at the time, and suggested that I bring it back. This is very dangerous and of great concern. This vehicle has only 42,460 miles or so on it, and I don't feel that I should be encountering this problem. I have had it since 2010 and at the time purchased at 18,000 miles or so. I drive my vehicle locally only. I have read that this a problem with Ford Escapes, and I believe that this issue should be listed as a recall. Please help!.

During operation vehicle lost ability to accelerate, all other functions still existed. Yellow service ranch appeared on dash had to pull over and put car in park, I don't was very rough turn engine off. After starting car back up all lights were gone, able to drive again. This has now occurred more than 20 times. We have replaced both oxygen sensors,the purge canister and the catalytic converter. Still having the same issue. When this happens on large highways or a multilane interstate it becomes a very dangerous situation.

While driving on streets and highway, engine will stall out, complete shutoff, with no warning signs or lights. The computer is not storing any codes indicating faults. After a stall, can put the car back in park or neutral and restart. Most commonly occurs when transitioning from braking to acceleration.

Vehicle stalls/shuts off randomly while in motion driving. This has happened several times while on side streets and on the highway. Recently happened twice within 30 minutes. Extremely dangerous.

The Escape has been towed in 5 times in the last 6 months, the Ford house has kept it 2 weeks, 3 times and they can't figure out why randomly just won't start. They replaced starter, but that did not fix it. I took to a master mechanic and he can't figure it out. Vehicle was stationary.

1. Rear lift gate glass hinge corroded and snapped off, leaving glass dangerously hanging on one hinge. 2. Trunk inoperable due to trunk operating via electric patch and no longer receiving electric signal. 3. Rear passenger side wheel well extremely rusting.

Tamara recall - bailey can move my wheel and it's electric only had it for a couple of weeks and barely drive it but makes pages on it and there was no recall on the car.

The vehicle stalls when idling, even if only for seconds and surges forward randomly while traveling on the roadway. It has stalled on me up to 8-10 times in one trip from scottsdale to phoenix. It will stall rolling to a stop as well and has stalled on busy roadways and in intersections, putting me in great danger. This has been reported t hundreds of other drivers with the same vehicle and so far no mechanic or even the Ford dealership can pin point the cause. Other people have been reporting this same issue with their cars with only 30,000 miles and others have reprted that the car stalls at highway speeds and I am now afraid it will escalate.

I have a 2009 Ford Escape v6. There is a recall on my vehicle due to the power steering going out. Recently my steering wheel had started shaking really bad at times and now my power steering has totally went out. The information part on my vehicle tells me that there is a power steering system fault. I called the company and they told me there is a recall because this was made in the kansas factory. The problem is that they will not fix it because they say that someone took my vehicle into south carolina to get it checked and there was no problem. They say they've done their part and now I and responsible. *** they didn't do anything to fix the power steering. The only thing they've done was put it on a diagnostic test and it came back good but that was years ago. Just because they checked it years ago does not mean they performed anything to fix the recall. They have not done anything on my vehicle to fix the recall and they refused to fix it. This is a recall and they should be responsible for fixing it. How can I get them to fix this?. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . I believe there's also a recall or something on the purge valve. My check engine light stays on and it says there's a major leak and I believe it's either because the gas tank because there's no gas cap for my vehicle or it's either the purge valve. Either way that should be a recall because a lot of other people have the same problem. This should be fixed by the company as well.

Trunk button to open, bluetooth and steering electrical and the ability that it says that it can take keys out cause won't say that it is in park.

During a cold snap in January, I clicked my back windshield liftgate to retrieve grocery bags, and the hinge on the rear liftgate window snapped in half and sent the windshield flying on it's hydraulic into my left shoulder. My car was parked in the parking lot of trader joe's in kalamazoo, I was at the rear of the car, opening the liftgate with my key fob. I was impacted in my shoulder, sustained an injury I am still dealing with, if my child had been on my left, instead of my right, it would have impacted his head. This is a serious defect and the auto repair place I had it fixed otto kihm's, said that they see this issue all the time with the Escape.

I have 80,000 miles on this vehicle. My check engine came on. I have hesitation when giving it gas. I have a vibration when car is running and in drive I took to a Ford dealership, they check for the issued ans it came up with a codes, p0012, p0022, p0341, p0346 related to 11-12-5. The dealer stated they would need to tear down the engine to inspect, not repair, but inspect. Estimated cost would be $1500. My car only have 80000, should this be under a warranty. Ford need to stand behind their product and repair my car. I'm confused why would my car have this issue when it only have 80000 miles and not 10 years old.

My car stalled out on me twice on on busy roads. The throttle body had to get replaced. The vehicle was stationary at a red light both times.

Rear window hinges corroded. Window is in danger of falling off.

Vehicle would stall out, all power loss during driving. P2111 throttle issue. Happened 3 times. During acceleration/deceleration (especially on slopes) vehicle would just lose all power. Had to stop and shut off ignition before it would work again.

My 16 year old daughter was driving her 2009 Ford Escape yesterday. She was going about 40 on a city street and completely lost power. She was able to restart the vehicle and come to my work about 1 mile away. Her car did jerk a little but she made it. She was very scared. After researching, I found this is most likely the throttle body issue related to Ford customer satisfaction13n03. We took it to the dealer and sure enough if it the throttle body. They say, our VIN is not covered under this customer satisfaction fix. I called the Ford customer service and was told the same thing. This is ridiculous. The car is less than 10 years old and has 146,000 miles, so it qualifies, but they say only certain VIN# qualify. How is this? she could have been rear ended or involved in a serious accident because of this. How could you let Ford get away without doing a recall on something like this? we are obviously paying to get this fixed, but it is ridiculous. They know they have a problem and you even know there is a problem, but yet they will not fix it. You should have made Ford fix this in a recall for every vehicle for the safety of everyone. Why did you agree to let Ford basically pick and choose who they would fix with such a horrible problem?? it will cost me 310. 00, which is not fair since they know, but it is not worth risking my daughter's life. There have been thousands of complaints on this very issue. We bought this car used, but it is not our fault that we bought it with such a defect. We would not have bought it if we had known about this issue. We researched recalls before we put our daughter in this car, and this should have been a recall.

The back glass exploded!!!! I bought this car 3 years ago from my mother-in-law after my father-in-law had a stroke to help them out. The reason I am telling you that is to show how it has been taken car of. Luckily I was parked when this happened but it shook me up pretty good! I did not know what caused such a explosion. I was in the driver seat about to leave a driveway when it happened I am talking exploded! it was a oversized double car driveway the glass blew from grass on one side to glass on the other side! nothing hit it , it was not tooooo awfully hot, no one was around. I was in the front seat about to leave! the glass did do what is intended and shattered buttttttttttttt by explosion! I called my husband (I am still in shock) so he told me to call out insurance guy to see if it is something they will cover. In the meantime my husband looked up this problem by typing in Ford Escapes back window exploding it will pop up several pictures of this happening! I did call Ford all they can say is they will report it. My problem is 1) what if I was not in the car. . . . . I would have thought I got vandalized 2) what if I had been driving? 3) what if I had been driving and someone walking by (like in a parking lot with a baby) or blew out all over other cars? 4) what if I was in a store and people walked by and it shattered all over them? in my case none of this happened but it could since apparently it is happening a lot.
