Failure Date: 03/29/2017

Ford Escape hybrid 2009 1fmcu49309ka71086 recall number 14s05 Ford won't fix the defect. It will cause crash on highway. It took it to Ford dealer in fremont, CA. The dealer refuse to fix it. Everyday I use, I worry it will crash becuase it almost crash couple times in the last couple years, until recently I found out the recall.

37 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2016

I was driving in a neighborhood and as I was approaching a stop sign, I slowly started to brake. As I came closer to the stop sign, suddenly the brake pedal felt like it just "dropped out" and I slid through the stop sign and had to slam my foot on the brake pedal all the way to the floor and thankfully was able to stop, but was in the middle of the road at this point. This was very scary and I am thankful that there were no other cars around that I could have been hit or injured. I pulled over and turned off the car and then back on. Started driving again and tested the brakes, which barely worked now. I have to press the brake pedal to the floor to even start slowing down. I took it to my Ford dealership and they charged me $99 just to run the diagnostic test that told me that it was my hydraulic control unit for the abs system that is bad and it would cost an additional $2,100 to replace it. They would have to order the part, but wouldn't get there for 3 days, meaning I would have to continue to drive like this for another few days because I have to get to work with this vehicle. The part did not come in for 3 weeks, not days and I had to drive around like this. I have been doing research on this to see if this has happened to anyone else, and it has. Be careful of this, as it can be very dangerous and I got lucky that I was not injured. I called Ford to see if there was a recall, which there wasn't (yet) and they contacted the dealership and started a case for me to see if there was anything that could be done to help me out financially. The dealership did not help me at all since I did not purchase my car there. The lady on the phone from Ford was great and very helpful. She told me to hold onto my receipt b/c if there ever was a recall, (which there should be because these are people's lives at risk due to this failing part) they would refund 100% of the money.

38 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

My 2009 Ford Escape is stalling when I come to a stop. It is happening regularly and becoming a considerable safety issue.

39 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2016

I have been having issues with my ignition switch for quite awhile and from what I can see online I am not the only one having this issue in my model and year. One person mentioned that 2009 models do have a recall but I cannot find the number anywhere. I am trying to figure out if you know there is an issue with the ignition switch in this model why won't you recall this. I have just recently spent over $350. 00 replacing the starter on my car because that is what I was told it was and turns out not. Can you please let me know what you find out on this?.

40 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/16/2016

Electronic throttle body is malfunctioning causing vehicle to not shift properly and causing the vehicle. This has happened on the freeway out of the blue and almost caused an accident. When the vehicle is shut off the light goes out and comes back on while driving sometimes same day, sometimes a couple days later. Unless the light is on the code cannot be obtained.

41 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2016

Radiator fan is constantly running at high speed even when engine is cold. When turning on the ac for the first time this year a cloud of something came out of the vents which startled the driver and could have caused an accident if in a congested area. Ac is now blowing warn air only. This same issue is noted numerous times in online forums from other 2008 - 2011 Ford Escape owners.

42 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2016

Was driving at approximately 20-25 mph, slowing down when car lost power. Wrench light came on first time this happened. Pressing accelerator did nothing. Car continued to slow down to a stop with car still running, albeit hesitating and "idling rough". Turned car off and back on. Car started back up and ran ok but did the same thing the next day, but this time the wrench light did not come on. Online research indicated it was likely the throttle body, which had potential for dangerous situations, citing possible sudden deceleration. So I took the car to a local Ford dealer to fix it, but they did not fix it. Instead they "fixed" a different code they said showed up on the computer and did not even address the throttle body issue. The same thing happened two days later but, again, no lights came on. The third time it happened, the same thing occurred twice within 2 miles. Apparently it's still the throttle body I asked the dealership to fix a month ago that they did not fix. So now I'm out $600 to the dealership, and the problem is still not fixed. On all occasions, the car was being driven on side city streets at a fairly slow rate of speed, not exceeding 25 mph. And fortunately traffic was clear so I could pull off to the side of the road to get the car re-started safely.

43 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2015

After only about 36. 000 miles, the pcm computer controlling everything in the car suddenly failed. Luckily it happened while parked and not on the road which would have been catastrophic. It appears this is a known problem with Ford Escape vehicles in the past and presents a potential safety risk if the failure occurred while driving. There was no forewarning of this failure.

44 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2015

Takata recall I was driving in the far left lane of the freeway on my way to work and my car shut off, sometimes my cars does not start. I have had alternator, starter tested, and they are good, my camshaft sensor replaced, ignition switch replaced, spark plugs replaced, I keep a good handle on maintenance up, but my car shutting off while I am driving and sometimes don't turn on at all is keep happening, my steering wheel locks up, very hard to turn, all components in my car don't come on, gears light pops on and off, dashboard light sometime flickers. I have had my back lights. And it continues to happen.

45 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2015

When attempting to close the rear widow glass literally exploded prior to actually shutting.

46 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/24/2015

Washing my car and notice rusted wheel well on rear passenger side. Rust is coming through to the outside over the tire. Upon investigation, this seems to be a common problems with the Ford Escape. Apparently, this leads to more severe problems with the shocks and other parts breaking. I have only had this car for 5 years and usually Ford makes a wonderful product. I am greatly disappointed in this severe flaw and unfortunately will not be able to do anything about it due to cost. Hopefully, I will not pay with my life.

47 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2015

I was driving home on a 6 lane highway yesterday after work. Posted speed limit 65 mph. My cruise control was set at 65, I was in a center lane when my vehicle made a loud clunk and the cruise control cut off and I started losing power to the car. The engine was on but pushing the gas pedal did nothing. I was trying to get out of traffic to the side of the highway with cars speeding and swerving all around me. I was petrified. I called the dealer and the car was taken for service today. They told me it was the throttle body and motor and it was on an extended warranty so I did not have to pay for it. The receipt clearly states this is recall notice 13n03. I have now read about this online and you guys are letting Ford call this a "customer service satisfaction program". Well, you should know that someone is going to be killed. There is no excuse for not notifying customers of a default with a vehicle that endangers people. I never received a recall letter and I could of died yesterday.

48 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

Stalled out after stopping at a stop sign.

49 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2015

Braked at a light or stop sign at least 3 times when 2009 Ford Escape XLT wanted to accelerate.

50 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

On the freeway pressed gas-car did not respond, stalling. Put it in neutral, slowed, back to drive, rough shaking, hard to control. Very scary! got off at the closest exit -car was not responding. 3 passengers. I bought this car 6 days prior-so very scary.

51 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2014

Making a turn, my car jerked and could not accelerate. We had to cruise to our destination which was close thank god. I called Ford and they told me to bring it in. I told them I was unsure if it was drivable. He then told me he couldn't tell me what it was til I brought it in. Then told me I could take it in today but won't get checked til Monday. He got my name and number. We went to various auto places for opinions and solutions. We thought we figured it out but a few hours later it did it again. My husband went back to pep boys but was told they could not run diagnostics because the light was not on. I was looking online and noticed a compliant was made about this issue and went to the Ford website and saw it under the recall under my VIN. My husband called the dealership and talked to a manger asking why I was never notified. He explained its not really a recall but had an extended warranty if it meets the criteria. We explained that the first man never mentioned anything nor did he bother to look up my information to see if I had the recall. The manager apologized and said for me to take it in Monday and he would handle my situation. I'm appalled that I was not notified. This is very dangerous, especially because I have my 2 year old daughter in the car with me most of the time. God forbid my car would have stalled on the highway and I would have caused an accident because my car lost power all of a sudden. I never got any notification from Ford about the recall nor the warranty. I think this is very inconsiderate as people's lives are at stake. I pray that no accidents, injuries or deaths occurred because of Ford's negligence. My vehicle fits the warranty criteria so I hope I won't be charged for repairs. I hope the manager keeps his word. The only money I have is for christmas. If I have to pay for repairs, I can't buy gifts for my family or my daughter.

52 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2014

Slowing to stop at stop light in line of traffic on 10/6/2014, light turned green, traffic moving, attempted to accelerate, found car unable to do so, looked at dash, some lights were on (remember battery light, check engine light and possible oil light), but as I was in traffic, I was in a bit of a panic, I put car in park and turned key. Car started up and was able to run normally. On 10/10/14 in traffic driving at 25 miles an hour slowing to adjust to traffic, as accelerator is pressed to maintain this speed and keep up with traffic, car does not accelerate as gas is pressed, look down at dash, lights are on, remember battery light, check engine light, another one, possible oil, I was able to steer car off road into parking lot. Stopped car, put in park restarted and again was able to run normally. **this same thing happened about a year ago, was slowly driving into the driveway at work, and the car just wouldn't go. . . . I stopped, put it in park and restarted it, and have not had this problem again until now. At that time, I had the battery checked and battery was fine. As I do not have the date or mileage I can not report it in boxes above but feel it is noteworthy.

53 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

I had the recent steering recall done, never had an issue. Was out of town and then started the car and the wrench light was on. I went to the Ford dealership and they replaced the throttle body. In less than a week now when slowing down to make a turn the car has cutoff once and the next day had no pickup after making a turn. I do not know if its related to the past recalls on the throttle body or not.

54 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2014

Throttle body assembly shorted out internally, scan had code p2112. Engine had no power it stayed at idle while driving at 45 mph immediately slowed down to 2 mph.

55 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2014

My vehicle stalled and came to a complete stop from normal driving speeds. It continued to drive at about 5mph and then the little greem wrench light came on on the instrument panel. When turned off and re-started, the car ran fine for the trip home. This problem continues to occur; sometimes it won't happen for a week or so, sometimes it happens multiple times a day. I believe it to be an issue with the throttle body but the Ford dealership will not replace it under consumer satisfaction program 13n03 because the computer reads no error code. They, instead, suggest it might be an issue with the transmission. . . But these are not typical 'symptoms' for a transmission issue and several other owners have reported this exact problem when a faulty throttle body is present. I have contacted Ford customer service and hope to have this issue resolved ASAP as it will happen regardless of whether I am going 10, 40, or 70mph and is incredibly dangerous!.

56 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2014

The rear glass hatch hinges have completely disintegrated and my rear window is ready to fall off. Ford has basically told me to suck it up and pay for the repair. This has been a clear issue on Ford suvs dating back to at least 2002. The vehicle is only 5 years old. I am being forced to pay $260 for parts and then whatever labor might be when my window is ready to come crashing out.

57 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

2009 Ford Escape has a known issue with rust from the underbody and appears thru to the painted surface, it can also lead to rust to the shock and under the undercoating of the vehicle. It will lead to issues that can cause accidents . Ford will do nothing to fix the known issue and it is a manufacturing problem that has effected so many vehicles. Hoping this will help.

58 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/31/2014

On July 31st, my car was at a stop light, a minute after I pressed on the gas pedal, my car stalled (a light wrench on the dashboard appeared) -it would move maybe 1 mph but I was unable to accelerate on the gas pedal. After a moment, the vehicle was shaking . . . I turned off the vehicle and turned it back on, everything was fine, the light wrench disappeared. After 45 minutes later, on the road, the same thing happened again and I had to move to the shoulder to prevent any accidents from happening. Made an appointment with carmax less than a week later (because that is where I purchased the car, had it for a year). I was advised to come back if the same incident occurred because nothing happened since July 31st and they didn't want me to waste my money if they did not see anything. Since that appointment, the same incident happened numerous times during the week of August 3rd-9th. On Aug 16th, the wrench light appeared along with the engine light, went to my local mechanic and he mentioned that the throttle body needed to be replaced. It was confirmed today (Aug. 18th) when I went to an unscheduled appointment at carmax (even on my way there, the lights came back on) that the throttle body needed to be replaced.

59 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

Ford 2009 Escape-car started making a squeal noice and belt started to come off and when looked to see the what was going on the cars mounting boss broke off of timing cover and fell to the ground. The idler puller mounting bolts broke from cover and caused car not to be able to be driven. When checked with dealer was told never heard of this happening. When purchased new part. The idler puller has more steel metal for support and another bolt to hold where as the old one does not. Pictures are availbe if need to be seen.

60 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

There is a known throttle body issue with the Ford Escape 2009, where the truck goes into "limp mode" indicated by an illuminated wrench. I had just taken it in for this issue, Ford only did the recalibration and did not replace the defective throttle body. The next day while in the parking lot at my work, the vehicle went into "wrench mode" or "enhanced limp mode (since the recalibration)" and lurched into a cement pillar causing severe damage to the front right side of my vehicle. Damage was ~$5k, rental car $500, deductible $100, higher insurance, structural damage to the vehicle (permanent loss of value).

I live in canada. Ford has the incorrect address for me on their database of recall addresses. On their envelope address field for me they have misspelled my last name by truncating the name to only about 5 characters and have also mistyped my apartment number by also truncating it to an incorrect apartment number. When I called Ford canada about the incorrect address information they said it had "nothing to do with Ford and that who ever is providing them them with address info should be contacted by me". Does this seem to be the right way for Ford to handle this ? I only received the recall notice because the government of canada post office found my real address and in pen changed the address to my actual correct address. Question: are many other recall notices not mailed properly and are many people therefore not receiveing in their mail recall notices ? note: I put in new york for my state and zip of 00000 so that this would get through to you.

62 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 05/08/2014

My family were returning from vacation when the car deccelerated with no warning. We were on the interstate and we were inches from being rear ended by the upcoming traffic. I have been told the issue is with the throttle body and that it is not being recalled because you can still drive it. How about you tell that to my terrified girls (ages 6 and under) that it is safe to have cars and trucks flying past you at 70 mph and you can't accerlerate to move out of the way quick enough. A month later, the same thing happened to my wife returning from work. That's twice in 2 months. We have only the one car and have not been on vacation for fear of the car deccelerating. I guess instead of being in the business of preventing accidents, people have to die first before anything will be done to protect consumers.

Ford claims they have a customer satisfaction program (13n03) to address problems with the engine throttle body and that customers who come into dealerships will be able to have the powertrain control module software reprogrammed to protect the throttle body. The problem is- Ford will not honor this program unless the error shows on their diagnosis computer. I had this exact problem happen to me and the error did not show up on the Ford diagnosis computer so Ford will not fix this problem on my vehicle. As I was pulling out of a driveway and started to accelerate, my 2009 Ford Escape just completely lost all acceleration. The wrench light came on the dashboard, indicating an error. I could not get the car to drive above 2 - 3 mph. I took the car into the Ford dealership the next day, but their computer diagnosis machine did not show the problem. I was told that since I had powered off my car after the error occured, the error was cleared from memory and would not show up on the computer diagnosis machine. If the computer did not show that my vehicle had that error, Ford would not fix the throttle body. Who can drive a car 20 miles to the nearest Ford dealership when the car can only go 2 - 3 mph???. This is a major safety issue! I am very concerned that this will happen to me again when I am on a busy highway with my family in the car! what if this happens when I am driving on an interstate and I am unable to safely get off the road? since this has already happened to me, I know that my vehicle has this problem and it is only a matter of time before it happens again. How many people will have to be killed before something is done about this major safety issue????.

64 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

Vehicle loses power when accelerating from a stop. Additionally, while traveling at a steady speed (usually between 30-45 mph) the vehicle power flucuates between surging and losing power. The vehicle has stalled when coming to a stop becuase of this flucuation. Also, the transmission shifts irregularly. The rpms rev excessively high, then the transmission jerks the vehicle when shifting. This happens the most between first, second, and third gear. The dealership stated there is a malfunction in the variable timing of the engine. They want to open the engine to try and find the problem without knowing what they are looking for. This issue started when the vehicle was purchased with 44,000 miles. They dealership did not have any appointments available until the vehicle exceeded 60,000 miles due to conflict of schedule and long commute times. Then they refused to honor the warranty. The vehicle has been to the dealerahip several times in the last couple years with no resolution to the transmission problems. I have almost been in several accidents from the vehicle stalling or losing power when accelerating.

65 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2013

I would like to preface that this vehicle is not driven every day. Starting in July I had started experiencing drops/spikes in the rpm's. I would be pulling into my garage and the truck would suddenly lunge forward. Thankfully already having my foot on the brake; I could stop the truck before causing any damage to items in the garage. Then I started to noticed while sitting at traffic lights the rpm's would drop and it would run a little ruff for a sec or 2 then balance back out - this was very random. - next, while stopped at a traffic light it stalled completely on 2 separate occasions with in the same day. At first we thought maybe some bad gas, so we ran it almost out and filled up with premium. The truck was then better for a few days. The final incident was when I was taking my son to soccer. I backed out of the driveway and put the truck into drive, stepped on the gas, and it would not go. The rpm's would not go above 1000. Then the little wrench came on in the lower left of the dash. I quickly put on the 4-ways as I now was blocking the busy street for which we live on; and was able to limp the truck into a neighbor's driveway. Had it towed up to the local dealership and they said it was the throttle body. I could not believe the initial quote from the dealership - and we had purchased the extended care pkg with the vehicle - yeah so much for that. I started looking it up and found that Ford has acknowledged that there were production issues of the throttle body for this make/model/yr causing faulty parts to be installed - but yet will not take full responsibility, issue a recall and truly fix the issue. At least a service issue warranty- only if you have these issues and the diagnoses is the throttle body(code: p2111 or p2112) for this make/model/yr - it will be covered by Ford.

66 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2013

My wife was driving on the highway when the vehicle abruptly shut down in a high traffic metro arean as an orange wrench light appeared on the dash. After resting on the shoulder for a minute and speaking with me (her husband), I asked her to try and start the vehicle again. It started back up as normal with the orange wrench light now not showing. The car ran as normal for about 10 minutes and then it happened again. She was able to get the car home safely. The next day I took a look at the car, did some research, and drove it around for awhile. The car ran fine for about 15 minutes until it occured again. Apparently the orange wrench light means there is an issue with either the power train or the throttle box. The vehicle shifts gears as normal so I am left to believe there is an issue with the throttle box (as I have read many compaints regarding this exact same issue with the 2009 Ford Escape).

67 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2013

The above affected parts field will not let me choose a part. We were driving on the freeway and suddenly the vehicle lost power - we had to go to the side of the road. The power was still on in the car but the accelerator would not work. We turned off the car and then started it again and was able to drive again. This happened on three separate occasions. The wrench light came on in the car and the book said throttle/drive train problems. We consulted a couple of dealerships and we since found out that indeed these vehicles are having throttle/accelerator problems. Parts are hard to find on on a waiting list. There should be a recall on this to fix it. We are now going to fix the problem and save the receipt. We feel we should get our money back. This is a very serious, potential safety issue. Thank you.

68 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

Randomly the orange wrench light will come on and the car will lose power and shut off. I have to stop the car and then it restarts. This has happened in the middle of a freeway and was lucky to get to the side pull off. Very random as it once happened twice in a day and then again a week later. This has been a recurring problem in multiple Fords in doing research on line. Why has this not been recalled? problem seems to be the trottle body. Very dangerous. I have car at the dealership now and waiting their response.

69 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2013

The throttle body on my 2009 Ford Escape failed while entering a public interstate via an on ramp. The failure occured while accelerating. The effect was the vehicles engine was shut off, causing a rapid deceleration on a fairly busy on ramp. I was able to pull my car over to the side. Placed it in park, turned key off and back on, and was able to resume my 8 mile commute to work. Later, while driving the vehicle, the same issue occured twice within a fifteen mile period - both times while accelerating, the engine shut off in traffic. Three times in one day, had not seen this issue ever prior to last week. I took the car to the dealership where they diagnosed it as a failed throttle body. The car has been in the shop since 9/4. Today I was contacted and told the part was on nation wide backorder, and wasn't expected until 10/31. Internet forums suggest there are thousands of vehicles awaiting this part right now. Having the engine unpredictably shut off is a potentially dangerous situation to have while driving. There is a known issue within Ford and their dealer network, but to date, no recall has been issued. The delay in parts accessibility is dangerous, and could result in people driving their vehicles with this condition while awaiting the parts arrival.

70 Equipment problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2013

Jerking of my vehicle back and forth then reduced speed. My dealer said it was the throttle body.
