general problems of the 2010 Ford Escape

34 problems related to service brakes have been reported for the 2010 Ford Escape. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2010 Ford Escape based on all problems reported for the 2010 Escape.

1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2025

Concerns regarding my 2010 Ford Escape. Within thirty (30) days of purchase, the transmission completely failed, rendering the vehicle inoperable. Additionally, upon further inspection, it was discovered that the entire underbody of the vehicle is severely rusted and corroded. This corrosion appears extensive enough to compromise the structural integrity of the frame and essential safety components. While operating the vehicle prior to transmission failure, I also experienced significant shaking and vibration during both driving and braking. These issues raise major safety concerns, as they could indicate underlying brake, suspension, or frame instability. Given the combination of a failed transmission, extensive underbody rust, and unsafe driving behavior, I believe this vehicle may present a serious risk to myself and others on the road. These types of defects and corrosion levels are unusual for a vehicle of this make and model and could point to a broader safety or manufacturing issue. I am requesting that Ford review this matter urgently and provide direction on possible inspection, repair, or compensation options. I am more than willing to provide documentation, photos, or mechanic reports to assist in your evaluation. Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response regarding next steps.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2025

Brakes go all the way to the floor, barely could stop. No accident happened. It's very scary to even drive it anymore. I have taken it to 3 shops, 2 of the 3 say it's the abs module. I have read a lot of reviews on this car having this issue. Probably nothing to be done since it's not even made anymore. Parts are getting obsolete.

3 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

While driving, the brakes have no pressure. When starting the vehicle, the brakes go all the way to the floor. I took my car to several difference garages, and they determined the brake booster was the issue. No repair has been done, but the brakes go all the way to the floor and is difficult to stop. The 2nd issue is after the local Ford dealership performed work on the fuel system for a recall, the vehicle will sputter after refueling. This will cause the vehicle to almost shut off at a stop. I called the dealership, but they won't reexamine the recall. If I fill my tank up when I refuel, the fumes of the gas smell so badly you can't drive for a day after.

4 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

Vehicle getting stuck in park, I have press the brakes several times to get it to unlock and switch to drive, or push the emergency brake.

5 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2023

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that the abs warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that her husband was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the abs system had failed, which led to the power steering failure. An unknown abs part was replaced; however, the power steering failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic, where the battery was replaced; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the power steering control module (pscm) had failed and needed to replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000 (steering). The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000.

6 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2023

I was sitting at a red light with my foot on the brake. I was behind another car when all of a sudden I hear a chime looked at my cluster and it said "check brake system" and my car was rolling forward. I could feel I still was pressing on the brake and wasn't sure what to do so I put the car in park. Once the light changed I turned into the side street and when braking realized that while my brakes were slowing down the car they were not stopping it as normal. I made my way carefully to my mothers home as I was on my way to drop her off when it occurred. While driving I realized I could still stop the car with the brakes but I needed to put more force than usual and the brakes had more resistance. The car also did not stop smoothly but more like hard braking. Once I arrived at her home I turned off and on the car and it was still displaying the check brakes. I turned off the car again and pulled on the emergency brake release just in case and when I turned on the car everything worked as normal. I had the car towed home and had a mobile mechanic come and check it out. For him the car worked fine and no codes displayed in his system. I have contacted my local dealership and Ford twitter to seek help. As of now my dealership hasn't contacted me after 24 hours and the twitter account states they will look into it. Searching online there appears to be many other instances reported similar to mine. Possibly related to the Ford fusion brake recall NHTSA campaign number: 19v904000. This car was purchased used but has been taken care of and had regular maintenance at both a local shop and Ford. I've never experienced this before but am extremely hesitant to drive now as I don't want to cause an accident or be stranded somewhere. If this is indeed related to the fusion campaign there should be a recall as all other incidents reported were also for a 2010 Ford Escape hybrid.

7 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2023

Sometimes when braking, brakes fail to engage. Abs light come on to check sys. I’ve had abs sys checked could not find any problem.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

Brakes spontaneously failing. When you start the car the brakes go all the way to the floor. Despite bleeding the brakes and replacing the master cylinder no change. Appears to be abs which is a common report of failure in these cars.

9 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2022

I found out there is a recall on over 600,000 cars from 2006 to 2010. Mainly Ford fusion for the same problem I'm having on my 2010 Ford Escape. There is an abs breaking valve that sticks and the abs module needs to be replaced. This is happened on my car and is not under the recall but it's the same model as the 2010 Ford fusion and the same part. Why is this? I brought this into my dealer the first time they said the brakes were bad and the rear brakes needed to be adjusted and the valve was sticking but they were able to get it unstuck. They flush the brake fluid as well after $500 nearly $600 I went to drive the car and it was exactly the same. That's when they said it was the abs brake module, the valve sticking and needed to be replaced. This seems to be a pretty common problem with these cars. Why is there no recall on this?.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2022

8-26-2022 - traveling on highway in colorado, clear evening, dry road conditions. While normal driving at 690 mph I came up to a stop light intersection. The light was green and turned yellow while I was coming up to the intersection. I pressed my brake normally and the pedal went to the floor, there was no warning of any brake issues, the brakes are in normal operating condition. Had there been any vehicles crossing the intersection, I would not have been able to avoid a serious collision. I pulled off and was able to pump the brakes back to where I could stop the vehicle. I have absolutely no confidence in this vehicle stopping.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

Serious safety issue. Brake system complete failure in the driveway at my house. Luckily nobody was hurt and no damage to the vehicle or our home. Vehicle had to be towed to dealer. Critical electric brake component failed. Which one is unclear. There are several in "series" in the braking system. When the one failed it destroyed the others as well. Serious safety design flaw. One compenant detroys all? fortunate we were not in traffic and or highway speed etc. Very popular vehicle. Millions sold. Unknown if others have eperienced the same catastophic failure. Vey expensive repair. They say it will be $4820 + tax.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2022

My brakes were squishy, so I took it to a Ford dealership, where they replaced the master cylinder and the sender twice. After driving the vehicle about 10 times, they became squishy again, when I was approaching a red light. I became afraid that I would not be able to stop, so I started pumping them, and was able to stop. There were no lights to indicate where the problem was located. I took the vehicle to a different repair shop where they tested the replaced components under pressure, and they failed. Again, the master cylinder and sender unit were replaced. Today, 9-6-2022 a light came on stating the brake fluid was low. I returned to the repair shop where they determined the abs unit needs to be replaced. Again, the brake fluid message was the only indication that something was wrong. To me this is a safety issue, and I was afraid to drive the vehicle thinking they could completely fail and I would not be able to stop causing an accident.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2021

Electronic stability control (esc) and antilock braking system(abs) display on the dashboard: when braking at a stop the break skips and struggles to break. When turning while the foot is on the break it also skips. Warning lights on dash periodical turns on and off. The break skipping does not always occur. Fast breaking can trigger skipping of the breaks. Rain also increases the likeliness of break skipping and electronic stability control (esc) making it hard to control steering. The brake pad and rotors have been checks and are normal. Ford Escape 2010. Instances have been happening at random since 2018 at a frequency of 3-4 times a week.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2020

I have to push my brake pedal to the floor for it to stop. The only time it will catch is if I brake hard or aggressive but then the pedal will start to sink to the floor.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal went to the floorboard, which extended the braking distance. Mullinax Ford of mobile (7311 airport blvd, mobile, al 36608) was contacted by phone and informed of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,495.

16 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2020

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, when she had to depress the brake pedal to the floor to stop the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to local dealer bayway Lincoln located at 12333 gulf fwy, houston, TX 77034, (281) 929-6500, where it was diagnosed with needing to flush the brake assembly and have unknown parts replaced. The vehicle had been repaired but continued to experience the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and was needing the hydraulic control unit to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired as of yet. Upon investigation the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 19v904000 (service brakes, hydraulic), however the VIN was not included. The manufacturer had been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 120,000. Dp.

17 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2020

Steering wheel vibration getting worse by day seat belts in back don't work properly . Sometimes dont work at all breaks dont work after carwash.

18 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2020

I was driving in wet weather and slid on some leaves while braking. This caused an activation of the anti lock braking system (abs). After the abs event I had a difficult time stopping the car. The brake pedal felt spongy and it took all of my effort on the brake pedal to bring the car to a stop. This spongy brakes persisted for several miles. I immediately took my car to my neighborhood mechanic. He checked the brake system and could find nothing wrong. The brake system had returned to normal by itself.

19 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2019

Faulty abs module from factory causing 'soft' brakes that limit stopping ability and potentially fatal result. Many Ford Escape owners suffering same issue but there has been no recall despite it being a factory fault.

20 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2017

When I put the vehicle in reverse to back out of my garage, on a slightly sloped driveway, the brakes do not work, it will not stop and you have to pump the brakes about five times until the vehicle stops. It is going to cost me $500 to get it fixed. I see many complaints online but Ford will not take responsibility claiming that they have never heard of the problem when I googled it online, I read many many complaints. This has happened to me twice already, and I have only owned the vehicle for two months.

21 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal would depress to the floorboard without warning. The contact stated that he would have to pump the brakes and engage the abs in order to stop the vehicle. The contact had taken the vehicle to several dealers where he has had his brakes bled, master cylinder replaced, and the hydraulic control unit replaced. Despite the multiple repairs, the contact stated that extra brake travel time was needed to stop the vehicle. The manufacturer had been notified of the failure and informed him that they could not determine the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2016

1. Difficulty applying the brakes and when their applied the whole back of auto shakes terribly 2. The back door on driver side does not lock and the back hatch door does not open and stays locked.

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2016

The contact owns a 2010 Ford Escape. While driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle stalled and lost power on several occasions. The contact also stated that the brake pedal stalled and the vehicle accelerated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 64,000.

24 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2015

The problem demonstrated as I left the shopping center and made the first turn onto the street. The engine was very rough and not consistent, the speed varied from 20 - 40 miles per hr without any pressure to the accelerator. As I came to a red traffic light I had almost no brake pressure and prepared to turn into a school parking lot. This occurred in the first half mile of country road; as I realized I had no braking power I turned into a park lot and called for a tow truck. Fortunately there was little traffic that evening. This produced unnecessary anxiety for me even though I was close to home. Our mechanic checked many things, finally deciding it was diagnostic codes po306, po316, po109, po 300, and po304. Ford tells me this is not under warranty. Once again I felt this problem placed me in a potentially life-threatening situation for me as the throttle body had done previously (before the recall). I have nearly 3 computer pages of problems with this vehicle, ranging from seat belt latches, rear seat latches, hatch latch and defroster, quarter panel paint defect and rust, fan speed and effectiveness. This latest incident and the throttle body issues are the most serious. Tonight Ford informed me there is no Ford complaint form online. I was adamant that a Ford engineer needs to call me so I can discuss all the issues with this vehicle. Trade in value on this vehicle has probably plummeted due to all the issues. This vehicle was paid off in 3 years and I am not in a position to buy a new vehicle but I hope it will not be the death of me. In the interest of public safety I hope these problems can be resolved. After all the issues with this Escape I wonder how many car "accidents" are really "accidents". Thank you for reviewing this data.

25 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2015

I was stopped at a traffic light, with the brake engaged, and my car lunged forward into the car ahead of me, damaging it's liftgate (minivan) and bumper. I initially thought someone must have rear-ended my car, pushing me into the other car, but I was not hit from behind. My foot was on the brake the entire time. I am concerned this might happen again, injuring someone possibly in a crosswalk, or lunging me into cross traffic.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2015

Took my car to harrold Ford on howe avenue dealership and was told that the car has been worked on and picked up the car and didn't get far and the car stalled. Re-started the car and barely made it back home and called harrold Ford and told them what had happened and they told me to bring the car back and we had it towed to their facility again and received a call in the afternoon and was told that the car is ready to be picked up and we drive over there and the car stalled after a couple of blocks and had it towed to their facility again and the next day we received a call from harrold Ford and told us that there is nothing they can do for us and to pick up my car. " your car is a salvaged title" we took the car home via tow truck and we had a mechanic take a look at the throttle body and he said that it was never replaced! I feel that the couple of times that we drove that car put me and my grandchildren in a great danger and I thank god that we didn't get into an accident and the car only drove 2 blocks and I told harrold Ford that we brought my car for recall parts and now my car is not even driveable. Totally dead!.

27 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2015

Turn into a parking space and hit the brake to stop , car surged forward and jumped the curb. Hit a bus shelter, side swiped a tree , then jump curb back to parking lot before Escape came to a full stop. First time sled on a small patch of ice car surged brakes never took hold slid and avoided and street light and a tree before coming to a full stop. Took car to shop for oil change had brakes checked said no problem. But sometimes this SUV has a power surge when appling brakes.

28 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2014

I was driving on a service road and was entering the freeway when the transmission started slipping. This caused my vehicle to start jerking. The vehicle behind me almost ran over me as I was loosing speed due to the transmission slipping. I managed to pull over and after a couple of minutes the transmission started working again and I was able to pick up speed and continue driving. This incident also caused my braking and steering to be erratic. This happened 3 times on Dec 9, 2014. This is unsafe as it nearly caused a major accident in heavy traffic going south on interstate 35 out of austin. By my estimation there would have been no fewer than 5 to 6 vehicles involved in an accident had I not managed to pull over.

29 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

After sitting with my car running in a parked position for approximately one minute, I put the car in drive. I drove for an estimated 30 seconds. Then I stopped to check for oncoming traffic before pulling out into an intersection. When I pressed the gas to make a right turn onto that major road, the yellow/orange "wrench" sign immediately popped up. Simultaneously, my car began to rumble and shake. In addition, despite pressing the gas pedal, my car was not accelerating. I immediately pulled onto the shoulder of the road, which was difficult to do since my car was struggling to move. I turned the car off and restarted it. It was difficult to get the car to restart. It struggled and sounded like it was going to stall out, but after approximately ten seconds, it started up. Now, in addition to the "wrench" light, my Escape also had the check engine symbol lit up. Even though I was sitting on the side of the road with my car running in the parked position, my car was still rumbling and shaking. Interesting to note, I was actually on the way home from the Ford service department where I had just had my car serviced for a seemingly unrelated problem. The day before the throttle went, my back passenger tire became stuck in a locked position, and I was unable to drive. I had to pump my brakes, and put my emergency brake (which had not been engaged) on and off several times to unlock the back passenger tire. Ford determined this incident was due to water getting on the brake shoe which made it stick to the brake drum. They cleaned, readjusted and lubricated my rear brakes (drums, shoes, etc) and sent me on my way. My throttle went while I was on my way home from the service department at Ford where they had just fixed my brake issue. I had to be towed back to Ford since my car was not able to run.

30 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2013

Upon entering the flow of traffic on highway my 2010 Ford Escape began to accelerate on its own and increasing speed, realizing what was happening I engaged the brake to no avail, I was unable to stop my vehicle. I navigated to the shoulder and was gaining speed on the traffic ahead so I looked for an exit into a parking lot with no one walking in my way and turned into the lot literally on two wheels due to my increasing speed. I saw a wooded area with a snow bank and thought I would head that way rather than the alternative of other vehicles, building or people. As I got closer I then turned the engine off and stopped but not after standing on my brakes and smelling burning from them.

31 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

I was leaving the dealership for an unrelated service and noticed that my car was having trouble going- it felt labored. Initially I thought it was cold or something but soon realized there was a serious problem. I turned around and drove back to the dealer (1-2 miles round trip). When I stopped the car it smoked. My service person says its a potential problem with the brake sytem and with the hcu. Basically my front brakes locked up while I was driving. No warning lights were on. My car is still in the shop because the parts needed to ultimately fix and diagnose are on backorder until mid Feb. Also, there are apparently a couple other Ford Escapes in the shop right now with the same problem. I believe the parts on are backorder because this is a systemic issue with the Escapes. This is a safety issue and I believe these cars should be recalled. You have my permission to contact my service person luis nunez at holmes tuttle Ford at 520-292-3785. My repair order # is 793731. Feel free to contact me as well if you find it necessary. Thank you in advance for looking into this safety issue.

32 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/26/2012

Vehicle began throttling while driving on the freeway. Engine light came on. As I pulled over, vehicle slowed down jumping forward. Applied brakes and still kept jumping forward. Switched gear to park and car stalled. Turned on after a few tries. Continues to jump forward and shake. After a few minutes problem went away and vehicle drove normal. Three weeks later same occurrence. This week another occurrence of the problem. Contacted sunrise Ford dealer in north hollywood ,CA and was told I need to pay $150. 00 diagnostic fee.

33 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2012

Multiple noises started to occur. The first was a cracking noise when accelerating, second came a clicking noise while braking and then a howling sound. The crackling noise has yet to be discovered, the clicking was the drive shaft and rotors. The howling noise is supposedly the transfer case. Additionally, the gears do not seem to catch between 50-65mph.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/16/2010

My wife is the main driver of this vehicle and has told me that there have been several occurrences over the past several years including the most recent on December 18. 2013. There is a sudden unexpected engine acceleration similar to what the Toyota vehicles have had. At this point it only occurs when slowing down. She applies the brakes but finds it difficult to slow with the engine attempting to accelerate. This last time I was riding with her and she slammed the gear shift into park just before coming to a complete stop. I didn't think that was too good for the transmission but it did correct the difficulty at the time. Have any other people experienced this problem ?.
